I mean yeah... that sounds about like your typical pair of college roomates. We live off rammen noodles which is the equivalent of human dogfood and develop muscle at a terrifying rate. People say fuck around and find out. But because being an adult involves you learning stuff, it's in fact more like life advice at that point.

Oh my god literally my first year in uni I lived in a dorm and didn’t get a nightstand so I used a cardboard box some of my stuff came in form home. When I videoed my mother for the first time she was like “you’re gonna spill something on it or it’s just gonna smush” and while I did spill tea and water on it multiple times it was still perfect. I used it in my next year’s move and started using it as my nightstand in the next place (student housing has a serious nightstand deficiency y’all), but when mom saw it she ordered an actual nightstand from ikea with delivery, so I couldn’t refuse it 😂

But that's what you do when you're in college and think you're immortal still. You may live to learn you're NOT immortal, just immoral though if you're lucky.

As someone who also went to school for engineering, this is *entirely* on brand for engineering students: the ability to improvise solutions and jury-rig shit together with minimal preparation, and a total disregard for common sense. Also you tend not to learn about things like "stress" or "tensile strength" until your second year.

Different country, not the U.S. On the other hand, I just said "collapse" for dramatic effect, though you probably only need the legs to become misaligned during sleep for the poor dude sleeping below to end up sandwich between the beds. Mabey I'm just born an engineer or something cause I thought this was the normal logical solution that he did 😂 cause I have replaced plastic pins on something with metal from cut up sewing needles (the pegs that hold the kickstand in my tablet broke) I heated the ends up and stook them in the spot where the pegs were and it's stronger than before but the point is I just immediately was able to come up with that which I find really confusing like where did it come from how did I know to do that ????

To be quite fair, compression and torsion strength are completely different. It's the same reason concrete seems hard like a rock but collapses when there's too much strain pulling it apart. I'm no expert though, it's possible that the reason it held is different, but I'd guess it gives when cut, since it's soft, but being flexible and having the support of 3 other rods it was resistant to it sliding off and snapping (since the hole wouldn't be hard or sharp enough to cut it). I wouldn't bet on it lasting any longer than 2 years though, but still.

@@lucianoariasduval We know that the plastic is soft because they cut it. Imagine what would happen if the upper bed tilted a little. The weight would cause the plastic to bend and snap. There is a reason it's supposed to be metal.

@@dorarandom7870 I don't think you quite got what I meant. The fact we are 100% sure about is that, against better judgment, they used the coat hanger and it somehow held the whole year. What I'm arguing is not whether or not it was smart to do, but rather figure out how it managed to survive. Concrete, while resistant to compression, is brittle and and not very tough when pulled apart from different points. If they had filled the hole with concrete, it would've tilted over 100%. So why did the plastic hold? Iron and derivatives are both resistant to compression and also flexible (not brittle), which is why metal rods are a prime choice for support. What I figured is that while plastic bends easily, it's likely that its flexibility means that it resists the force of the bed sliding off. Flexible plastic is easy to bend sideways, but very hard to snap. Imagine if you couldn't strain the plastic's integrity by bending it and you just had to snap it in half by pulling with one hand and pushing with the other. Being incased in wood it wouldn't actually bend, it just slides, so maybe as long as you don't push it too much, it can hold your weight going up and down the bed. It's still mostly just a theory based on vague understanding of how these materials work. I'm no engineer, I'm a biology student and I have to study organic chemistry even if it's not my thing, those are my qualifications lol.

@@lucianoariasduval I'm also not even close to begin an engineer but your idea seems pretty solid. It's also not just the materials that kept the beds from being unstable but the beds themselves. It's hard to explain but if the beds started to tilt, the plastic wouldn't bend far enough to actually snap because the beds are in each other's way. The pressure that would have to be applied would have to be strong enough to damage the bed itself. To stay stacked on each other is actually a preferable position for the beds regarding gravity. The plastic was mainly just there to keep the upper bed in place. It's not that plastic is that durable, the position in which it wouldn't be is just less likely to happen. Still, pretty dangerous.
