I took the day off to listen uninterrupted to the last biggest show. Once it was all over and the radio went silent, I was so sad that a large part of my life was over. When Outkast came on, I switched radio 1 off for the last time.
♥️2022♥️ I cried bk then...and im at it again now in 2022 listening to their last show.. havnt listened to R1 since. To Mark n Lard....you lads made a nation laugh!!!!♥️
Thanks for sharing this. Between 1 and 3 in the afternoon, nobody on the road who worked at my company ever did anything but listen to their show. Back then I was the sales rep covering central Manchester. I remember Tramp Watch and was fortunate to actually be on Oxford Road and follow said Tramp as he staggered down Chester Street accompanied by Lards commentary on his progress opposite the now demolished BBC building. I got to tell this to Lard by chance after bumping into him in Heaton Moor. I was pretty star struck but a couple of weeks later I was in the same bar and he came over and said hello. Top bloke. I missed their show so much after it was binned. That poignant “stop” back then gutted me... Again. Thanks for sharing this. Best radio show ever.
I was a lorry driver for a few years straight after graduating from university (I always refer to doing so with a degree in basket weaving). I had a radio schedule to get me through the long days (usually 5am start, finishing up somewhere in the country, 'parked up' at 6pm); Alan Brazil and Mike Parry doing the talkSPORT Sports Breakfast, Mike Dickin thereafter, then Mark and Lard. Whatever 'bilge off the playlist' they played didn't bother me, and I can't recount how many times I nearly crashed on one of the UK's highways and byways from either crying, nay howling with laughter, or paralysed by hysterics. There hadn't been a radio show like that before, and there most certainly hasn't been one anywhere near since. I cried after that final "STOP!", I cried real, regretful tears. Whether coincidence or not, my lorry driving career ceased to be shortly after.
Listening in 2022. Basically, society has pretty much went solidly downhill since they cancelled these two. Not saying they were holding everything together, but.... Thanks to the uploader
I was working in Glasgow. Made the work spin out then made sure I was in the car going home at 13:00 and listened to the Last Show live. Loved it and cried a bit.
I was a courier at the time. I literally stopped the van and sat and listened to this. Best days of radio sadly long gone. I had to work late that day too.
I remember listening to this when it was broadcast on the eve of my 30th birthday. I never listened to Radio 1 after that and it seemed a fitting end to my twenties.
Miss these guys,. As a due, they pushed the boundaries right to the edge, and definitely wouldn't get away with much of their material, these days. BRING THEM BACK, PLEASE.....
Even now in 24 its still emotional ,apart from this peelie passed away ,and personally my marriage of iver 20 years ended and with it the life I'd known ! Still find 2004 nostalgia slightly melancholic as it was all about endings for me
I LOVED these two and as @gimble has already said, they were my friends with me every weekday afternoon!!! There was and is no show like it, and unless they ever come back, there never will be! Genius innuendo that was so 'close to the bone', yet presented in a way that meant it could not be condemned. If anyone did try to complain about any content, the complainer would have to explain how they came to the conclusion of it being offensive, in which case it could be denied and thrown right back at the complainer as to their own perception of the content they're complaining about. I will never forget that it was Mark Radcliffe, on this show, that broadcast an unconfirmed report of a 'small plane' hitting one of the World Trade Centres in New York on 11th September 2001. I remember exactly where I was, and his words, like it was only yesterday. It was then that he proved his professionalism and integrity by way of switching from a show of total satire, to the most serious broadcasting anyone could ever be thrown into. That, and the show will stay with me forever. Thank you Mark Radcliffe and Marc Riley for your service to the country! I salute you!
Thanks for uploading this. I listened to it while I was working. Great piece of nostalgia! Radio 1 was never the same after they got rid of Mark And Lard and Chris Moyles.
it was a very sad day, listened to this coming back down the road from inverness in my soft top transit van on that fateful day over 14yrs ago (i didnt have a bedford rascal like larry) and actually shed a tear at the end as they had been my friends for so long, from their 4am slot, to morning show slot, them chris moyles had that then they were my afternoon friends, i still tune into 6 music now and then but them leaving officially made made me old as i just had to go to radio 2 then, thankyou so much for this posting, it has literally brought a tear to my eye again remembering the great music of the time and timless banter of the time in winter snow and spring rain any afternoon of the week in the van with mark and lard :) thankyou!!!!!
not to forget how many times that track was looped behind them talking on afternoon show, incase anyone interested it was sleep on the leftside by cornershop ;) from 1997, they are best known for brim fulla asha single in 96 :) i remember them pushing belle and sebastian etc in the middle of the night before daytime slots, soz for being such a geek :)
PS ravis sounded so good live on this, forget live lounge etc, it was cracking, il only make one critism tho mr hussy, i know i cud listen to the other tracks elsewhere but id of liked to just relive all the brilliant tracks in full, but once again thankyou so much for sharing, i lost my tape my mum switched on for me way back then, tho i was listening as usual too obv :) and at 11 30 the monologue is over aquarium, soz im a music bore hence i like comedy with musical intelect, we will never see the like again :(
ps i used to perform with devine comedy in the 90s (only studio session musician) a certain track that made it to a religious sitcom had a guitar replace a harpsichord of original, im rambling but yes i worked in the industry as a session musician, sorry for my rambling, just miss the proper scene and days gone by :)
I remember getting my dad to tape this for me whilst I was in work. So I got him to record onto the video recorder via the channel off the Skybox for radio one. Far do's he did a good job. I had a decent DAB, so heard it live. I was one of those weird people who would sit in the office with one ear-phone in doing my job whilst giggling to Mark and Lard. I was gutting hearing the words "stop it". RIP John Peel.
Listening to these guys was such a big part of my life back then, they were the best, and I still sometimes listen back to the old shows. Just look at the calibre of artists who recorded the messages and songs for them, shows how well they were regarded. My favourite part is still the Keane cover by Travis 'After mark and lard go', so poignant and true. And like others have said here, I literally haven't listened to Radio 1 since that last 'Stop' was said.
Thanks for uploading this! I think I've looked for this online a few times over the years having listened live way back when. You can tell how highly Mark and Lard were thought of by all of the artists that left messages, sounded like genuine affection... even from Stereophonics.
Thanks so much for putting this on here. I remember always trying and more often than not succeeding to get back from site to do work in the workshop from 1-3 to do some critical work just for this show with these 2 clowns. Not much work got done but it was great for morale, they were a service to the Great British Industry. Thank you M&L
Just been listening to a few old Travis tunes and wondered if their “after Mark & Lard go” tune would be knocking about anywhere, not only the tune but whole last show. I took it hard, part of my youth died with that show ending, afternoons have never been the same, and I never listened to R1 again, great great days 😂😂😂👌
remember that show, the day comedy died on radio 1, used to be lots with these two, Lee and Herring, Armando Ianucci, Kenny Everett even Vic and Bob for a tiny show
Listened to these guys religiously after finding them on radio one on the night show they used to do the Tony mcarrol doing drum and bass was one of my fave bits......its winking at me guv
These pair were the funniest, and the show was so original and how I didn't crash my van driving about the parish crying laughing I'll never know. How they got away with it being so close to the metal I'll never know that also. Probably because they were so clever with it all, it was a magic time listening to them both bouncing off each other!! Magic Miss it so much... Why not put on a one off show with fat Harry and all the characters for chaaaaaaaarity and proceeds towards the NHS in this pandemic????? It'll raise a fortune boys!!!!!
Well took me 16 years to finally bring myself to listen to the last show from these guys. They were hillarious always had me in fits of giggles even though I was usually up a ladder(cleaning windows) listening to them on my pocket radio, guess you didnt want to have it go on for so long but my favourite songs were cut 10p short (oh no ya joekin) never bothered with Radio 1 since was such a sad say for radio>
Like many this was my last day listening to Radio 1 as a religion! I turned off and only listened to Moyles and Mills. I think this was when R1 went the wrong direction. I remember listening to this show live and thought it was the end of an era.
Like so many here, this was the last time I listened to radio 1. It's no surprise though, if you were a fan of Mark & Lard then radio 1 isn't for you anymore. I'm sure that all involved knew that a large % of the audience would leave along with M&L. This big end of era event happened before, DLT quits live on air, soon followed by the controller Johnny Beerling. It will probably happen again but we won't notice. Mr Radcliffe & Mr Riley knew when to go and went out on top.
Pretty much the day Radio 1 died. I know that the changes made by Matthew Bannister, in the 90's, are often seen as the killing of Radio 1. But I actually really liked that era, Mark and Lard became one of the standout acts from that time. I suppose some may say that Chris Moyles kept the flag flying with his breakfast show until 2012. I do see that point, but the station surrounding that one show had changed dramatically by then. I appreciate that Radio 1's purpose is to serve a young audience, and that I'm no longer within that age range. But I feel that peak Radio 1 was still inclusive of all ages, whereas today it feels alienating. It now has a very narrow appeal, and I don't think that's what Radio 1 should be like.
Remember it like yesterday not been the same since radio is dead an them woke jokes idiots don't help! Take me back before it all went pete tongue 😘✌🇬🇧
They really did fuck over London with that long silence at the end, before the emergency DAT kicked in. Intentional? If I ever meet either of them I’ll ask them.
