When the DNA of art identifies the artist About the ease and exceptional ability that Mark Knopfler has, in composing and releasing beautiful songs, makes us think about this gift, or talent, as they wanted. It is not possible to delve into empirical questions, as it is of a specialized professional technical scope. But what about for us? General public or enchanted by your idol? Yes... we have few, however, deep considerations that are good to talk about. The power of a compliment, for example, works as a bio brain stimulator for the artist, strengthening him so that new seeds are born in the form of lyrics and grow blooming already singing the melody. Adding this aptitude, to the incredible gifts with technical mastery as an instrumentalist that the artist has, leading him to be known and recognized worldwide, as the great magician or genius of the Guitar, it also boosts his capacity for creation and inspiration, to make it attracted to him. to the general public. In this phase of the creative process, we see another capacity and potential that consolidates once and for all, the title of music genius identified worldwide, by giving him the power to make the marriage of that composed lyrics, to a certain musical genre. This technical facility, or expertise, puts him again, in a vanguard position with originality, by transcending and immortalizing all his work. Mark knopfler has dedicated himself and deserves to be the genius of world music. 🎶🎵🎸🎸💥👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏

I can't really think of one. Some of his very early work sounds a tad unpolished when compared to his later accomplishments, but even then it's far better to listen to than 99.9% of what's out there today. I've been watching a lot of his recent stuff since I just discovered it. Who knew he was still writing and recording? Obviously not me, so I'm playing catch-up. What I love is that no matter how powerful or heartbreaking the song he's singing, he is so completely unassuming in his delivery. Just stands there and sings and plays. Contrast that with so many of today's acts--and even acts that were around when he started out--that all have gimmicks! No gimmicks here--just absolutely perfect songs and guitar work. Another thing I love about his music is that his songs are lyrically interesting. I don't think he would have made it near this long writing songs about unrequited love, as some musicians seem unable to break away from. I saw him in a documentary where he said he reads a lot and writes songs about the things he reads. I don't know any other songwriter who does that. It makes his work so versatile. Can't stop raving now that I've discovered a bunch of great music I didn't even know was there. I'll be too busy for a while to complain about my government... (I'm a Yank, of course.)

This song brings tears to my eyes every time. Like so much of his music, there's a superficial story underlaid with a universal message. The narrator is a soldier in Bonaparte's army while it was being introduced to the reason why no one takes Russia for long (why, hello, Father Winter). Besides, the Russians chose to burn Moscow to deny as many resources as possible to Bonaparte (ie, it's not a brilliant idea to challenge someone with nothing left to lose). Bonaparte started out the Russian campaign with an army of 650,000 and managed to return to France with just 27,000 soldiers still capable of fighting and 380,000 dead (mostly abandoned wherever they fell). Even Austerlitz, Bonaparte's greatest victory, was not a great victory for the narrator because he lost an eye during the fighting that continues to hurt him. The narrator is reflecting on the great mistake of trusting a charismatic leader who spins out fantasies for his people but shows repeatedly that having a vision is not necessarily equal to achieving it--with the people being the ones who suffer the greatest losses for the charismatic leader's vanity. Underneath is the story of betrayal of trust, regret for falling for something objectively too good to be true and being reduced to the desperate hope that the mistake not be a fatal one. I have to wonder if there are people in the US this year who are learning the same bitter lessons.

@@sherryburrows882 I honestly pray you are correct. My father was a POW in the Korean War. I've lived all my life with one of the negative effects of war (PTSD and physical ailments) in front of me. Why is it that so few of the people in power today appear to have any grasp on the true horror of war?
@sherryburrows882

@@GrainneDhu Sorry for your sad experience. Did your dad come home? My dad was a military lifer and I was mostly raised on Army bases. He was in at the very end of WWII and served a couple of years in Korea. He was a civil engineer, though, so was never at the front. He did have one good joke about it, though. You know the difference between mechanical engineers and civil engineers? Mechanical engineers build weapons and civil engineers build targets!
@GrainneDhu
@GrainneDhu 5 лет назад
@@sherryburrows882 I LOL'd at your dad's joke. My father did survive POW camp (or I would not be tapping on this keyboard). I'm 62 and he's 93. The only way I can put it is that something inside of him is broken and, at this point, I think both of us have given up hoping it will ever heal. He continues to be tortured by his experiences as a POW. Despite that, my father has lived an admirable life. During his medical career he helped tens of thousands of people, including during his time as a POW (as a surgeon, he was pretty close to the front lines, which is how he came to be captured). I don't care what a certain cheeto-hued politician thinks, to me, my father is a hero because even under the absolute worst of conditions, he continued to do all he could to help his fellow man. I doubt I will ever be able to forgive that sneer about POWs from Cadet Bone Spurs.

@@GrainneDhu I'm sorry for your dad's issues. I volunteer at a local VA psych and substance abuse treatment center and talk with both Vietnam Vets and those from the current conflicts. I've met a couple of Korea and WWII vets, but the WWII ones are dying off and the Korea vets are mostly older than tend to find themselves in treatment for alcohol or drug use. Vietnam vets and those from Iraq and Afghanistan are another story altogether. As a country, we're eventually going to have a huge price to pay for what we're doing in Iraq and Afghanistan, both places I believe we have no business remaining in, especially Afghanistan. Both the British empire and the USSR ended in great part because of their attempts to take and hold Afghanistan. It's now our longest war EVER! I've noticed that a lot of Mark's songs are anti-war. I love this one and Brothers in Arms both. It seems that after WWII most of Europe seemed to turn its' back on warfare. Could be that they simply don't have the military-industrial complex that keeps us going. In America it's all about profit, and those like Dick Cheney's Halliburton makes billions every year by our continuing adventures overseas. And we don't even hear about most of them. That caravan Chump wants his wall for? We've overthrown the government of Guatemala once and Honduras 3 times in the last 20 years or vice versa. And we've been active on the ground in El Salvador arming and funding one side or another since the 60's. But it never even makes the news, because they don't really want us to know about it. We are one of the most violent nations on earth, and we're still, for better or worse, the only country that has used a nuclear weapon in warfare. Think about that...

LYRICS: We've paid in hell since Moscow burned These Cossacks tear us piece by piece Our dead are strewn a hundred leagues Though death would be a sweet release And our grande arm¨¦e is dressed in rags A frozen starving beggar band Like rats we steal each other's scraps Fall to fighting hand to hand Save my soul from evil, Lord And heal this soldier's heart I'll trust in thee to keep me, Lord I'm done with Bonaparte What dreams he made for us to dream Spanish skies, Egyptian sands The world was ours, we marched upon Our little Corporal's command And I lost an eye at Austerlitz The sabre slash yet gives me pain My one true love awaits me still The flower of the aquitaine Save my soul from evil, Lord And heal this soldier's heart I'll trust in thee to keep me, Lord I'm done with Bonaparte I pray for her who prays for me A safe return to my belle France We prayed these wars would end all wars In war we know is no romance And I pray our child will never see A little Corporal again Point toward a foreign shore Captivate the hearts of men Save my soul from evil, Lord And heal this soldier's heart I'll trust in thee to keep me, Lord I'm done with Bonaparte

'Done with Bonaparte' poignantly tells the story of the retreat of Napoleon's 'Grand Armee' following their ultimately unsuccessful invasion of Russia in 1812. Told from the personal perspective of a single soldier, the song captures the terrible human tragedy of a campaign that first advanced with as many as half a million French and allied soldiers. The devastated, exhausted force that left Russia numbered around 27000, with at least 38000 dead or missing - victims of guerilla warfare, poor logistics, and a scorched earth policy on the part of the Russians. The song movingly captures the suffering of the retreating soldier ("Death would be a sweet release") , the anarchy as the army begins to disintegrate ("Like rats we steal each others scraps, fall to fighting hand to hand"). We hear of the soldiers' longing for home (my Belle France) and his wife or sweetheart (the flower of the Aquitaine) and his intense disillusionment with the leadership that brought him and all those he knew to this pass ('Done with Bonaparte'), and his earnest hope that no other would-be dictator such as Napoleon will dominate the world his child, or his descendants will live and grow in. Sadly his reference to Napoleon, the undeniably affectionate nickname of 'the little Corporal' immediately brings to mind another egotistical Corporal of short stature. This foreshadowing of the rise of Adolf Hitler reminds us the world is not done yet with total war, nor mass slaughter to satisfy one man's will. This remains one of Mark Knopfler's finest songs, understated and powerful, a reminder of his ability to span genres and cultivate ideas in his music. A classic.
