This is the newly opened Cornell Terminal, located in Markham, Ontario. The structure services 8 YRT bus routes, as well as VIVA Purple, and is the centre of a future transit-oriented development. We take an in-depth look at the new terminal, exploring its features, accessibility, and the bus routes which service it.

Unsheltered bike storage and lack of priority pedestrian walkways to the existing nearby developments and hospital seem like huge oversights. It could be many years before this place gets significant usage.

@@mattyu1008 Yeah, YRT is all about flashy new infrastructure that politicians can buy votes with, while providing very poor service and frequiences for people who actually use it. Despire not having any dedicated lanes, and a much smaller budget, in many ways Brampton's ZUM service is actually better for users just because its frequent.

Lol the busses don't stop at the hospital anymore, but they didn't put a crosswalk in to get you across the road to the hospital? The pedestrian and bike infra that would have made this actually useful isn't even planned? This would be like the cheapest part of this whole thing. Two pairs of curb bumpouts and some white paint.

How was this $50 million, it's literally pavenment and a few walls. With that money you'd expect paths and tunnels to those neighbouring buildings, as well as a more impressive waiiting room.

So you have a terminal that is not easily accessible by pedestrians in the nearby communities or hospital, and there is no parking for commuters to park and ride. So what are their target passengers?

I don't know how I feel about these projects that are meant to attract development in the future... it's good to plan ahead but when you have existing areas of the GTA that are starving for better transit now, I think the money would be better spent in areas where the ridership and development already exists.

$50M CAD (€38.2 EUR, $37.8 USD) for just 7 bus routes sounds like a huge outlay? I can only assume that bus frequency increases and new development is expected off the back of this investment? You do highlight some key oversights in this new development the lack of pedestrian routes to local housing seems a basic mistake and for a terminal/interchange point designed to serve a hospital I didn't see an easy walking route to it either. Surely a covered weather proofed route to the Hospital should have been an essential part of the plan.

I wonder what was the reason behind this chosen location. Fancy terminal does not attract riders. A transit system should connect with points of interest. It is a shame that it is lacking a sidewalk that connects the hospital. Can you imagine how someone can cross that requires a wheelchair? Better yet, during winter time? Markham( and the rest of GTA) should relax the number of parking requirements for all commercial development. Crossing the sea of parking is the biggest turn-off when comparing public transit vs cars. Improve walkability will make public transit far more attractive than buildling fancy stations in the middle of nowhere.

What's the point of adding a bus terminal in a car centric suburb? Nobody is taking the bus, since they are infrequent, go nowhere and get stuck in car traffic. Problem is the horrible car centric suburbs, they have no soul or culture, they all look the same. Canada needs to build walkable cities.
@XG3N3SIS_
@XG3N3SIS_ Год назад
Its a work in progress. You can’t build a walkable city overnight. This is a step in the right direction though if the planned TOD for the area works out. Otherwise I do agree with you that it’s a bit of an awkward placement for a bus terminal.

It seems to only be a YRT problem. Transit in Brampton and Mississauga have people actually using it despite still being car centric suburbs because they also have walkable communities and now have busways/express routes that use the nearby highways
@MarloSoBalJr
@MarloSoBalJr Год назад
@@Amir-qz4bn I don't live in the GTA nor in Canada for that matter but from I what see from observation videos, development outside of Toronto tends to spread westward into Hamilton and London, so Mississauga & Brampton have the opportunity to build themselves out like walkable metroplexes but YRT is in an area of nothingness (no disrespect) so "maybe" in a quarter century YRT's coverage would be more "city oriented" but, at the moment, a horse & wagon would have as much success as YRT
@ALuimes

Love the video but I do not like the terminal. Just seems like a costly vanity project to say 'Hey everyone! We're investing in public transportation!🤓' without all the fundamentals to make it "public" Is there any reason why the terminal wasn't integrated into the medical campus?... Heck, was it too hard for them to install a crosswalk?
