I think gage block method is probably faster than reading that old school vernier scale. more than one way to skin a cat - we have students use a combo square to get the feel of that method- then we have a couple of dial caliper version of the height gage. We do the NIMS flat plate layout that way and then center punch the holes and drill out on drill press. The benchwork - we use 1x2 1018 steel and mill the ends to 3.00" and do layout for holes and etc. Or use a milling machine for drill press work if open.
Why do you not zero the hightgage and work of its venier? Fiddling around with gageblocks and having to have a repeatable pressure on every measurement seems verey inneficent to me. Yes there might be a little bit more accuracy with the gageblocks, but is that level of accuracy still done by the scribed line? Most hightgages I know have 1 or 2 thau increments and that is plenty enough for all work I have ever seen done by hand. There is definitely a place for this technique but for generell layout it just seems very overkill to me.
