Great interview, lads! You both always ask the pressing questions, and never waste the opportunity. Great stuff! Looking forward to seeing the remaining episodes from a whale of a collector. Also, great to see that Marshall remains passionate about the hobby, so free with his time, and is happy to impart the knowledge he's gained in his lengthy time in the hobby with others. 👍 On a side-note... thankfully you both had a back-up recording! If not, this great interview would've been lost!

Thanks … sorry about our audio quality. I did my best! Literally taken from the main camera recording a cell phone on the table.

@@SportCardMadness: All was clear enough to hear, and visual fine. Don't worry about it. At least you managed to record it all. Would've been a real shame if you didn't think ahead and have the back-up. 👍

Great interview! I always love hearing hobby legends talk! The only thing I’ll disagree with him on is the 86 Fleer set, it certainly is not “the best set ever in terms of condition and quality” 🤷🏻‍♂️

At Part I, this is one of the best interviews I've seen in the sports card realm. Marshall's knowledge is authentic (which is refreshing) and the Buffett analogy is perfect. Your interview style and the recap at the end provide more value. Considering, I feel bad when (secretly) buying cards worth $500, yeah, I'd say he's got some balls!

It's a little surprising that you guy were surprised by Marshall's answers around cleaning. He did say Bill Maestro was his mentor and Al Rosen was basically like a brother. They both have a sorted history with cards as you know. Although he did stop sort saying trimming and 'chalking' are no bueno. Chalking was something I had never heard of either. Still don't full understand the mechanics of it. Either way, this was great and I am looking forward to the rest of the interview.

Seeing his collection is fascinating, but i wonder how many of his high end vintage cards are trimmed? I just find it hard to believe 50,60,70 year old cards can be perfectly centered knowing the way they produced cards back then?

Lets be honest with ourselves; Marshall Fogel is a popular guy in the hobby, because he bought and held a nice collection that eventually made him a fortune. Now, hypothetically, if this same collection did nothing in terms of investing and perhaps even lost value, this guy would be a stranger to the hobby. Whether we want to admit it or not, value is what drives interest in the hobby. Furthermore, luck has nothing to do with Fogel's success. He was ahead of the game and knew what he was doing. Nobody acquires a massive collection like that and just gets "lucky". He had a very intelligent approach (like Warren Buffet) and insights to the markets. He knew what was undervalued and simply knew where to value invest his money. Many called this man a fool, but now hes considered a genius.

Money drives the BUSINESS, not the LOVE! People who think that are the ones that RUIN the hobby. People who think like you actually lack passion... in anything
@vintagecollector5340
@vintagecollector5340 9 дней назад
@@tstewart3034 What you fail to realize is that you can have BOTH a business AND passion for the hobby. How do you think card dealers make a business out of it? They have a passion for it. You have to have passion for a business to make it a successful business. My entire point is that these collections wouldn't be amazing without the value that the items hold. I have rare items of some top-tier players that nobody cares about, because they're not valuable. Value often dictates what we purchase for our collection and admire in a collection. There are exceptions, but none of us would be here if we didn't have the passion. If you think otherwise, then you clearly don't understand the definition of the word. People like you who think they know a complete stranger over a comment section is not only what's wrong with the hobby, but society as a whole.

@@vintagecollector5340 just like you judged Marshall?
@vintagecollector5340
@vintagecollector5340 9 дней назад
@@tstewart3034 I didn't judge Marshall, I judged all the hypocrites. Alot of these same people praising Marshall now are the same people who would have judged him and ridiculed him many years ago. Its no secret that people ridiculed him for years. Now that his collection is highly valuable, those same hypocrites think he's a genius. He's no longer ridiculed, because he did well and proved everyone wrong.
@vintagecollector5340
@vintagecollector5340 9 дней назад
@@tstewart3034 If his collection had not grown to the massive fortune it is today, he would still be ridiculed to this day. Those same hypocrites would be bragging about how right they were about how big of an idiot he was for spending big money on collectibles. However, since they were all proven wrong, everyone wants to pretend this man was never ridiculed or faced any harsh criticism.
