Here's the long awaited (and long) review of the 'Joe Satriani' Satch Amp from Marshall Amplification in the UK. Does this JVM Satch model resolve all those issues on the old JVM?
Did they REALLY get this sorted once and for all? Is this thing worth £1395 or $2600?
Well we've completed this review of Inside and Outside the amp to find out what's really changed and going on. You may well not want to know about this amp if it resembles the sounds of the old non JS model. Remember those OD1 and OD2 Channels which squealed like a banshee all night? Exactly.... you really would be making a mistake unless you're Bert Weedon (RIP Bert).
We show you what you're getting for your money and are probably one of the first and only RU-vid channels to do it in a way that is completely unbiased about the equipment we review. NOTHING is paid for by any manufacturers so we don't have to bend the truth or simply tell porkies to cover up any shortcomings of the products.
Check out my website too - there's a complete (and more in depth) review on there right now at www.tonymckenzie.com/marshall-... where there is a written review of the Marshall JVM410HJS amplifier head that is even better than this video.
This video has an 'alien' track at the end showing the amp with other music so you get an idea... but hey, I'm no Satriani (lord knows). I don't really know the track and it was simply an improvised jam right to the camera (including the guff notes :) so apologies for all of that. Tones were a little thin and tinny to the camera but sounded OK where I was.
But you know what, If you are about to buy one of these... you might go buy the amp, play it a while, but then decide you don't like it? then what? Well watch this video and read the review and it could save you a fortune or simply make you buy one (it could go either way - these things are subjective). Find out more than those paid reviewers will ever tell you... and as for magazines? You don't REALLY believe or trust what those guys write? do you? Of course not. You simply don't get advertising from a company you just slated.
Don't forget to check out that other stuff on my website or indeed here on my RU-vid channel there's lots of stuff for all guitarists. And of course please subscribe, ring the bell and thumbs up!

@@tonymckenziecom oh it does say Yamaha! Evidently Yamaha has the distribution for marshall in Japan! I live in Japan with my Japanese wife. She double checked my reading of those characters. Those characters are called katagana that is a system that is used to write words that are not Japanese!!!

This is an interesting comment... firstly, not because it says Yamaha (that's interesting in a different way), but because last might I bought one of these and should never have sold it. The JVM410HJS probably has one of the best Marshall channels of any of the modern style of amps since the JCM800 - channel two red mode. I'm going to revisit this amp as they are now getting pretty hard to find and the prices are escalating somewhat. The one I bought is 2014 but absolutely mint and not abused so it's a great amp top come back to. When I originally made the review above, it was actually far different than I complete 'inside and out' reviews these days. My review on my website went in to far more depth than this video here: tonymckenzie.com/marshall-jvm410hjs-satriani-review.htm and anyone that has not read that and considering this amp should. At the time the review got about a 8 out of 10 but today I would rate this amp at a ten. In any case, your 'Yamaha' comment was great and there's no doubt I'll include that comment in the 're-visited' JVM410HJS which I'm sure will be a big improvement over this 8 year old review :) It's a wonderful amp... to review and the single thing I can find on it is the feet were rubber made on this amp and that do over time start to collapse through the 22 Kilo weight! Ha I'll be including that of course :). Stay safe....

Yes I really liked the HJS way more than the standard JVM410H as it has great tones. The regular amp is a shadow of the Satch head for sure. Thanks for posting your opinion of this amp head and its great to hear you liked it and that you agree :) Thanks for letting me know Jeff.

Tony, thanks for another great review, and also thanks for the look at the guts. The circuit board and wiring look pretty good. I like that they're soldering the resistors above the board so that air can get underneath, and they won't burn the board up when they get hot. And, wow. the range of sounds this amp produces is awesome.

I sent my question because for some reason, the video stopped playing at the 36th minute or so, just before you rated the amp. I was able to reload the browser and see the end where you answered my question in the video. Haha. I do love my YJM100 and can't imagine parting with it. Again, your equipment reviews are the most thorough and unbiased I've ever seen. Excellent job as always. Cheers!

***** I bet it takes time but it's worth it, your reviews are pretty unique! I'm so disappointed, a local store had just advertized a JVM410HJS brand new for 999€ and both heads they had sold out before I had time to go and buy one... I guess I'll have to break the bank and pay an extra to get mine. 100W sound way too loud for the small venues I play but assuming you haven't used a powersoak for your videos, it looks like it can be used at reasonnable sound level, correct?
@tonymckenziecom
@tonymckenziecom 9 лет назад
Fred D. Oh you missed out there... that was a great price... the amp is really not that bad on sound volume overall. I often hear about guys saying '100w is far too loud' but in reality most amps have a master volume... so turn that down... they still sound good to me. This amp will work nicely on lower volumes too so nothings lost because of that. Most of my amps are 100 watts... with the exception of the H&K Grandmeister (36w) and a JTM45 (30w) they are all right up there on 100 watts. Indeed on volume the JTM45 is one of the loudest because you have to crank it near enough flat out to get that great sound (no master volume). Another loud amp is the Electra Dyne, but I recently bought a 'CabClone' from Mesa and that allows me to use the amp in such a way that it sounds cool without too much volume. Hope it helps.
@fendafred
@fendafred 9 лет назад
***** Got your point. I hesitated buying the Marshall YJM 100 back in 2011 thinking I would barely use 30% of its capacity and it wasn't long before that beast sold out. Hopefully, the JS signature head is not a limited edition (at least this year) and I've still the possibility to buy one. A feature that I would love to see on the Marshall is something similar to the "Infinium" valve autobias that is found on Bugera amps. I know they're much cheaper than UK made amps but their 333 XL Infinium is supposed to be a copy of the JSX and it retains great features (3 channels, noise gate, reverb, master volume, boost...). Ever thought about doing a review of those Bugera amps?
@tonymckenziecom
@tonymckenziecom 9 лет назад
Fred D. Yes the YJM was a very nice amp.. but huge. I had one for a long time, but sold it (I really wish I had kept that one) and as you say they are no more and rarer than hens teeth. The JS head is not limited I believe now. Seems they are keeping it - last I heard but that might change (they don't tell me anything different than anyone else LOL). You know what I have considered the Bugera amps as a target for a review. I hear good and I hear bad about them, but there are sure enough of them being sold. Maybe it's the price (or not) but I guess there could equally be other reasons why guys buy them - they may be great amps. I have to be selective on amps (as I have a lot already) as I have to buy them. I just bought a not too common amp on Sunday.. a Tony Iommi Laney amp (launched a couple of years ago) that Tony was heavily involved in developing with Laney. Its a tube amp with EIGHT preamp tubes LOL. Reason for buying that is really the rarity and most guys maybe have not seen one... its a cool amp for sure. So the Bugera is a choice that might happen it's just down to what I find and where. There are really few shows these days and my next foray in to shows is the Music Messe - I'm usually unable to buy from that show so its more of a filming venture to show on my channel or website.... always interesting stuff. BTW the autobias (if I remember correctly) has been on the odd Marshall... but FYI on the HJS its inside! I mentioned that in my review that the Marshall designer commented on but alas he did not think it was a 'big deal' at the time. Oh well I tried LOL.

Hey there Tony! After watching several of your demos I just had to leave a comment here for you... Your the best man...not many people take the time to make an in depth review of gear like you do...you just cover everything down to the entrails of the amps, very very useful! I imagine the time it most take you to make this... Your video reviews have led me to buy a Marshall JVM410HJS...and maybe somewhere along the line a Sonic Stomper Maximizer...both to my wifes discontent! :) Well, enough said! A big thank you sir and keep this reviews coming, love to watch them!^^ Greetings from Portugal

Hey Tony, I bought the amp about 2 years ago, after seeing this review. Stepped up from a Laney Ironheart IRT120H. And I wanted to say thank you for that! Never had regrets ever since. I did a little mod to tweak it to my taste (increased pick attack, a bit more bite...). But the overall sound and the dynamics on this beast are amazing. I'm never going to sell this amp. Every single rehearsal or gig, when I open up the amp's volume (OD red mode, master halfway, channel volume at 1-2 and gain at 4) always puts that grin on my face like "yeeeaaaahhhhh". It's not concidered to be "the" high gain metal amp, but it stands on his own. Using it in a melodic death metal band, some co-musicians are very surprised by it. In a good way! Oh and uhmmmm, my cab: a 1960 B loaded with 2 V30's and 2 G12T-75's in X-pattern... Ground moving, I tell you! Yes, your video's make a difference for people like me. Again, thanks! Nic

You have not made a mistake in buying this amp. I still have mine too and won't be selling it anytime soon. Play that channel 2 in the red mode... it's just like a JCM800 but with more balls. Great review and great amp. I got this amp 6 months ago and it is amazing. The crunch channel alone makes this amp worthy. Green on Crunch is classic plexi, orange is JCM-800 and red is AFD. red on crunch is glorious. It can do Slash with a Les Paul with vintage output pickups, but Red is usable for everything. The harmonic overtones and complexity of the gain on Red/crunch is great and Marshall should pat themselves on the back for that creation. The clean channel on orange mode when pushed with a eq pedal with a bit of a mid boost sounds like JTM45 Cream-like tones.It's more early Marshall on clean orange and clean red, so it is not "clean" per say, they have gain but not crunch which makes it early Marshall. I was pleased with how dynamic this amp is. I think Satriani was more of a fan of vintage style dynamics and wanted an amp that would convey that. Everything is usable and that is what counts. You can have 100 channels but if only 10 are usable, what good is it? On this amp, everything is good. The noise gates work great and better to have than reverb. Put a reverb pedal in the loop and enjoy a quiet amp with the gates on each channel.
@tonymckenziecom
@tonymckenziecom 10 лет назад
I could not have put it better myself. That channel 2 on red is the best channel for me and it really is a great tone there is no doubt. The clean IS clean too and that makes a change for a Marshall. It's still currently one of the best amps I think available... and I really like the YJM100 too which has its own benefits and caveats. Thanks for your point of view as that always is good to hear when someone else likes an amp that I do. Oh and thanks for watching.

***** I forgot to mention that it was interesting to see someone take this apart and let us look inside..I don't have the courage to do that, so that was great to see and you should be thanked for your efforts. But I still have no idea what a choke does, if it makes it better than the regular JVM, I'm for it.....Now, if I could get my hands on a YJM, I would probably have the ultimate Plexi and be in Marshall heaven..I tend to think of the JVM Satch as really a versatile hot rodded modern JCM 800 and the 800 is the true heart of it's design.
@tonymckenziecom
@tonymckenziecom 10 лет назад
Brian mo I usually pull the chassis on all the amp reviews I do. My view is that lots of guys want to see the quality inside even if they don't understand it. Quality speaks for itself in a way that no company can - if its cool inside its probably very good. The YJM does have its own 'baggage' (I review it on my channel) but overall its a cool amp.

yes. i have experience with JSX. used it about a year on recordings and live. to me it was perfect. brilliant clean channel tone and beefy tasty crunch channel. it has really wide range of styles to play on it. on JSX i learned how to open dynamic range with master volume to maximum, but the channel volume regulates loudness u need. actually for me it's the rule to all combos.

I just completed a 'NEW' review of this very amp here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-uACtMejLB4I.html which you might find interesting. I had TWO of the 410H heads over some time and honestly I never really made them work for me. That new video says a lot about that as I walk through the HJS amp (which I recently bought again). But music and tones are subjective - what is good for me might not be good for others and what some other guys love maybe not for me. I never got on with the OD1 and OD2 preamp volume levels and they squealed after about 9:00 or 10:00 on the control. The HJS are completely different in that respect. Hope it all helps a little and if you find a HJS then grab it! Thanks and stay safe.

Well I do think the JVM410HJS is one of the best amps for versatility they made... and I have another video of the HJS here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-uACtMejLB4I.html which shows one of these I bought more recently... I like Marshall too :) great amps. Stay safe.

Thanks for the great review. I just ordered mine today. Do you still have your TSL 100? It is one of my favorite amps. I did some mods to mine, and I grin ear to ear every time I play it.

No I sold the TSL a while ago... but it was used throughout an album I did in 2007 called 'Eniac' and honestly I wish I had kept it. No mods whatsoever for me as it was a masterful amp and tone to die for... no doubt Ill get another.

I love the Satch and YJM heads! I already own the Satch head, but the YJM i can't find. Luckily i got the satch back before they stopped production. What price are the YJM's going for when they do pop up?
@tonymckenziecom
@tonymckenziecom 3 года назад
YJM in the UK is typically about £1800 occasionally cheaper (but USA is higher!). I just rebought a Satch head after years from selling this one (I should have kept it) and the Satch the regular 410H for sure. - you will know that. I paid about £1100 for the Satch head about 2-3 months ago ($1450) but non UK expect to pay more. In fact I reviewed the head I bought here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-uACtMejLB4I.html (you might have seen it) showing the inside and out of the amp. Hang on to yours. BTW careful with the YJM they can have an issue on the power reduction sometimes... Thanks and stay safe.

dad dadd Depends which combo amp... some have two speaker outs.... some don't. If the amp does not then remove the speaker from the amp out and plug in the 4x12 (or whatever) but make sure that the Ohms matches (or in worst case is HIGHER). The 1960 AV I think is still available....

Hello Tony, I am thinking of buying this amp but I do not use a lot of distortion, mostly clean tones. How much clean headroom this amp has? would you say it is as loud as a Fender Twin Reverb when in clean mode? Thanks and great review of the amp.
@tonymckenziecom
@tonymckenziecom 6 лет назад
Indeed I would say that the clean channel (mimicking the 6100 Marshall) is probably the cleanest Marshall have produced and that was a specific for Joe Satriani that the clean channel was really clean. I used to have a Fender Twin way back in time :) and those can be a very loud amp... (and I used to crank mine) but it's all down IMO to the cab you select... move the air and it will be loud enough no doubt. Hope these comments help, but if you can check one you will probably find what I said is correct... if not don't be afraid to tell me!. Thanks for the kind words and for watching. I have a number of amp reviews coming up over the next few weeks of amps not seen too much but all in their own way useful stuff.

Hi Tony, the sounds you're getting at about 22:23, is that all pre-amp overdrive? Is the master volume set to a fairly low level? I don't see you wearing earplugs so Im guessing the volume in your room is very reasonable. The main question is: are most of the crunch sounds you're getting mainly pre-amp clipping?

Hello Tony, I am really picky about noise gates/suppressors. The one I use/depend upon is the good old and humble Boss NS-2. I tried the Peavey JSX and did not like the gate at all, Actually did not like the amp much, However when I tried the Marshall Malmsteen model (which was a great surprise and so much more than a YJM sig model I thought/think, Its just a good marshall) The gate was actually pretty useable, Alot more like ENGL's gate/suprression. Wondering how the gate on this one is? Thanks

I love your Reviews, I tried the Satch head for hours in store, but I guess I was searching for a slightly more treblely type of distortion, so I fell in love with DSL which was more to my liking. Thanks for watching. I have owned a DSL, a TSL and most the others too LOL. I liked the DSL but it was not as flexible for me. I sold my DSL a while ago (a special edition in green covering) which was made at the time in the UK. You are of course right the DSL is now made abroad. It would not stop me buying one if I wanted one really, but I did have one so probably won't buy another. But the DSL was good for the money no doubt. Most stuff is a personal thing when it comes down to tones so you did the right thing in checking both (or more) out.

Hey Tony, missed you at Messe last year (again :) ), and will probably only go to China and Japan this year, would have been cool to meet up. I thoroughly enjoy your vids mate, and love your laid back no nonsense attitude. Anyways, a small heads up, at 05:20. That is Japanese, not chinese. And before you ask, no I don't know what it says, just spent enough time in both countries to have learned to differentiate between then written languages when I see them :) cheers! //Richard PS. Just ordered myself a JVM Satriani today! Actually, primarily thanks to your website review. I also had the original JVM, and had terrible noise issues with it as well, even though I liked the tone of it. SO I'm really looking forward to this amp! WiIll be pairing it with a 1960AX greenbacks cab :)
@tonymckenziecom
@tonymckenziecom 10 лет назад
Hi Richard, yes sorry we did not meet at the Music Messe. Unfortunately work commitments preclude me from going this year :-( and I was really looking forward to that. Yes others too have told me its Japanese I have been enlightened by the grasshoppers a few times LOL. You will love the Satch amp if you liked the old JVM its much improved - I play that amp often and it has lots of tones. I would have liked more difference between ch 3 and 4 (maybe like a RK II) but its not there so I guess they thought it not important to have radically different ch 3 & 4. It will work well with a 1960. I Use 1960 but the 300w cab and that works very well, as does the Vintage Modern 1960. Let me know your thoughts when you get it ;-) I always like to know about that sort of stuff.

Great Demo Tony! I had the 205H and squealed like a pig! This 410HJS seems really cool. Seems like its very mild voicing changes as you switch thru the modes. OD1 and OD2 seem voiced alike instead of drastically different on standard JVM, which would work well for me. Essentially I could set up clean, crunch and lead and lead2 with four channels. MV for solo boost or OD2 for solo. This signature amp seems versatile for anyone. Love your playing. Awesome guitarist. Great Demo!

Tony, what is it about this amp that gives it such easy, awesome harmonic feedback? Any other amps do that?
@tonymckenziecom
@tonymckenziecom 8 лет назад
+Josh Brown I think that's a combination of the amp, guitar, volume and where I stand :)... other amps I have that CAN do that harmonic feedback very well (not necessarily shown on any review) is the Bogner Brixton (very limited with features), The Marshall TSL100 (some would disagree but check out my 'Eniac' album recorded on that amp), The 1987x (with a Tube screamer TS808 and volume) but most of the others are 'different' in one way or another. Some guys don't like the Satch version of this head but I thought it was pretty cool. Thanks for watching.

Hey Tony - Nice video as usual. I need some help here: I was told to connect my ISP Decimator G String II noise reduction pedal (quite an expensive pedal) in the FX Loop but in SERIES as it won't work in Parallel according to ISP. I want to eliminate a little noise from the power amp on the Orange and Red modes of the Overdrive channel. How do I do that on a Marshall JVM210H? It is exactly the same as the 410H or 410HJS. Now, I see 2 different FX Loops on the back of my amp. If you look at the instructions of the JVM (for the numbers I include the link to the manual, it's on Page 8), should I use the normal 'Serial/Parallel FX Loop' (12) on the manual or the alternative loop that says 'Power Amp Insert/Serial Loop' (13)? On the (12) nothing seems to happen and I have tried several ways of connecting it. Again, according to the manufacturer, I need true SERIAL Fx Loop or the noise reductor won't do the job. Thanks in advance man. Hope you can help me. www.marshallamps.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/08/JVM2-hbk-Eng.pdf
@tonymckenziecom
@tonymckenziecom 9 лет назад
Connect the Decimator to the 'Serial' loop and don't waste time on the Parallel loop (those generally are hard work). The 'serial' only loop is the one to use. Parallel loops have a portion of the signal that 'bypasses the actual loop... I have found on near enough all parallel loops that signal still passes without going through the loop itself no matter how you set it. Use the one marked 'serial' and NOT the one with 'parallel' above it. Both amps look the same to me re the loops. I don't have a decimator but a serial loop is a serial loop wire as: preamp out to decimator in and decimator out to power amp in all in that loop. Hope it helps.

Thanks for the reply, actually I'm considering to purchase a new Marshall amp and I have an ultimate question, do you think the JVM410HJS is versatile enough to cover 2 new ones like 2018 DSL+Origin? If not, I prefer to get 2 heads and some money in my pocket.
@tonymckenziecom
@tonymckenziecom 6 лет назад
IMO the DSL is pretty reasonable especially for the money. The Origin is OK too, but rather more classic rock I think (I have yet to get one). The HJS can do so much re sound though and it's not an amp that has many limitations in that area. The clean is pristine, and the rest - from crunch, through liquid lead to even detuned stuff is all easily handled. I agree it's expensive but one of the better amps I used of recent times. I did have a DSL 100 but to be honest I sold it some years ago and never really went back to the DSL.. if you can try a HJS I doubt that you would be disappointed... anyone help Elvis out about what you found if you own one? Preferably someone who owns one.

I compared my 85' JCM800 to the AFD100 and found the tone for the 800 at 6, mirrored the AFD at the reduced volume.( as it was supposed to.) I'm kinda sad that Satch plopped his name on the head and didn't do what he said in a few interviews. I know you are twisted also. It's the "mysterious" settings of a Rockstar. I'm glad I saw this video man, you always do the homework for me. I'm no famous guitar player, just a guy who wants to have the best gear for his buck. Cheers....
@KHGuitarFreak1988

I think Mesa incorporated some delay in switching so that any reverb doesn't splash over to another channel, particular going from a lower gain to higher gain channel/mode. There is one way to almost if not totally negate this. Leave the reverb switch turned on, but turn the reverb knob all the way down. That way you cut down on a lot of the delay...
