I don't normally comment on videos, but this is by far the most streamlined and useful review of this amp on RU-vid. I like a lot of gain in my playing, but don't like tuning down (which you see on a lot of high gain amp reviews on here). I think I'm going to pick one up!

This is the best review I've seen so far, because you really get the sound of the amp. Good call! Hopefully I'll have one of these by the weekend. I used on at our last band practice (usually use a Boogie MK IV) and this blew me away.

Great Review. One of the best most through on youtube. I do have 2 questionS. With so many options is there a possibility that say the orange mode on OD2 sounds the same as the green on the OD1? Have you tried the 2 channel JVMs? Is the OD channel on that the same as OD1 or OD2?

My favourite head and very affordable really - less than 2k for the head, footswitch and a marshall 4x12 cab. It always tickles me when people blub about spending 2 grand on an amp but then blow 5k on a CS Gibson or something and then run it through a VOX AC15 or a Blackstar HT5 or something and wonder why they don't feel blown away. You got to get a proper amp and cab to hear the true voice of a guitar. P90's through this for example tick all the boxes. Through a cheaper combo they just don't.

I'm impressed with that guitar. That looks like a old PRS with the old acrylic paint before they went to the new V-12 finish. I could see the depth in the quilt and paint. Also the very dark fretboard.

After more listening, and opening my mind, plus drawing from past Marshall amps I used to own....I am ready for my first Marshall since 1989. I am looking at the Satriani head. I head I could do mods to the stock JVM and have local amp techs mod the amp for less than the cost of a JVM410JS. Is this amp as good? How about next to aJCM 800 2205 or JCM 900? What about the killer Vintage Modern? THANKS BRO.

the JCM800 has less gain so can sound a bit thin at low volumes, but saying that if you've got a good drive pedal in front its not to bad. i never think tube/valve amps are that bad at apartment levels unless my apartment level is really loud lol or my room adds stuff. You could also try an attenuator so you can get all of your amps tone at whisper volumes and there are plenty of companies that do them, THD hotplate is what id go for.

The CM 800 are fantastic amps but the good ones are rare as rocking horse hit to come by now as everyone keeps hold of them...the 410 is a versatile and amazing do-it-all amp. I find some of the modes on the odd channel (amber) sound remarkably close to a modified jcm 800 which was my favourite amp of the early eighties; almost soldano like.

Hey Paul, nice review. I have a question for you, and hopefully you know what I'm talking about. I have this Marshall JVM410H, but mine, likes lots of others I've googled, has a white noise sound when I hit orange and red modes in OD1 and OD2 channels. With guitar volume on zero or maxed out, it does the noise. That's even with gain settings on 2. Have you come across or heard of this? Any help would be great.
@PaulGlover
@PaulGlover 9 лет назад
Gavin O yeah man all high gain sound introduce a little hum, a noise gate gat get rid or this if you want a silent signal. Boss ns2 rocks.
@gavino2185
@gavino2185 9 лет назад
Paul Glover thanks for that. Is this even going to help with the head by itself? I've tried a noise gate pedal I have (mxr noise clamp) and it made no difference what so ever. My amp will make the noise even with no guitar plugged in, but only on od1 and od2 orange and red. Every other mode and channel is fine. Should I be running something directly thru the effects loop of the head by itself perhaps? Just trying to pick your brain, as I know there are lots of others out there in MARSHALL forums that have had same issues, but no real remedies. Cheers man.

Mate i found i could get a really good tone at low volume if you run the channel levels at full and use the masters to bring up the level to acceptable volumes. As with all valve amps its going to sound better dimed to shit but i really felt that you could get tone at bedroom/apartment levels. i like to say it is wife friendly lol. this amp has got really usable eq as well so the stuff thats lost with volume can be sort of replicated by eq'ing. Hope this helps dude face. Thanks for the feedback

At low volume this amp is quite impressive but it seems once you try and get the volume going, along comes a steady stream of howl. Do you always have to be on top of your volume knob with this amp so as not to deafen audiences? Its a real pain. Probably why Joe Satriani opted for the gates in place of the reverb. Also just got this amp and the series effects loop does not work on OD 1. It has a lot going on so I suspect it will be a short life amp worked as many hours as I use them. Life span of a Marshall under continuous use seems to be 3 to 5 years then dust collector.. If you hear a crackling noise spend 500 dollars fast on new tubes or you will short it out. Then Good luck...Excellent vid. I am going to try that full volume trick to see if it will tame it any. Cant seem to control the beast!! lol

I've used mine extensively, several hours per day for 6 years and it works like a charm. I've had to swap the tubes once and it's coming around to doing it again, but that's the case for any valve amp used that much in my experience.
@ThePaulgregg
@ThePaulgregg 8 лет назад
Alexander Hyll Was it the pre-amp tubes making it howl or did you just swap them all out and the howl stopped? I returned the amp because I was nervous of accidental channel selections at loud volume. just seemed to have too much going on for me. 4 channels would have been perfect. 12 channels was just too much to deal with. You can get any sound from that amp and it will squeal harmonics like a mad piggy.
@AlexanderHyll
@AlexanderHyll 8 лет назад
I swapped all of them because of bias problems. Was 4 years in tho and like i said used extensively. I got rid of some of the humming but on stage, grounding/lighting + humbuckers you will always have some howl. I still have it gated with an isp decimator (rack), partly why the Satch 410H model has gates instead of reverb (also cause he didn't like the sound of the reverb compared to Roland rack fx).
@tanshaomala

I put one Decimator II in front of the amp and another in the effects loop and linked them together. Zero noise, perfect.

I'd get it to a local dealer to have a look at maybe, is it the case vibrating? Have you got it on a very bassy cab? If it's not a tone buzz more of a physical thing that is. If it's a tone thing it may be a tube. For me though a dealer is ya best bet bro.

Paul Glover Thanks for the answer. I am in the market for a new amp, which will be used live extensively, so I am looking left and right. Your demo video is one of a handful on whole yt which doesn't feature highly compressed tone from JVM. There are bunch of videos out there with lots of compression, you can't even hear the string attack, it's all smeared by dialing in too much preamp gain. I especially especially like your OD Orange channel tone, pretty chunky. If only you could up master volume a bit (I know, you are in a building), really curious what it would add tonal wise. I was wondering if it's possible to dial in tone on JVM similar to a boosted JCM800 (i.e that awesome midrange roar) or not? I really like the sound of boosted 2203, but it's a single channel amp, so it's out of the picture for me. If JVM is able to do it, then I'm sold. What's your opinion?

Excellent Review on the JVM 410h! I owned one about a year ago and so i have to make one complaint about your statement on OD1 Orange: Do you still believe that this gain stage is kind of AC/DC like? I don't think so ... This is my main channel for big rock riffs and even to play solos. AC/DC tone rather can be found in the Crunch-section in my opinion. What's the point of turning the channel volume all the way up? I tried to balance the master and channel volumes to get it sound right. I also think that turning up the channel Volume reduces a little bit of fizz - I don't know why. But by turning it all the way up, don't you get volume issues with Clean Green that doesn't use the channel volume? Nevertheless,thank you - great demo! :)
@PaulGlover
@PaulGlover 8 лет назад
sounded the best to my ears dude at the volumes levels we had to demo at, I also take it as I find it so to me it did have a very classic tone on that channel but mate you've owned one so your feedback for the guys watching this is awesome. I only had the amp for a day or 2.

+MR. JR This amp is definetely what you're looking for. Maybe, buy a booster pedal for some extra asskicking when it comes to really heavy music.... But over all you get everything from this beast! ;)

+MR. JR This is THE highest gain amp Marshall has ever made. It'll do anything from cleans, to AC/DC crunch, to the highest gain possible. In fact, this amp was designed with too much gain, to the point where it gets fucking insane. No overdrive needed unless you want to use a tubescreamer to tighten up the low end for super-low tunings, but anything drop C and above should be fine.

All I can say is "FURK!!!" (Sorry kids, Vicar, Mum), that sounds awesome. Wish I hadn't had to sell mine. I also didn't at the time have (most importantly) the playing skills or the guitar to fully take advantage of it. Quick question, how is it with the Jem?

@slayerfan116 it certainly does mate I will also remember the loop info for each channel and the reverb settings. It's a very complete tone machine.
