Hello Model Railroaders! In this video we get our third HO Scale layout update on the Chicago & Northwestern Marshline Subdivision. We review my model railroad benchwork construction and I share a few methods that I used to build it. This is the best benchwork I've ever built, period!

Hey, thanks so much for putting this out here like this! This is the first that I've seen of those biscuit joints, and I'll talk them up to some of the locals and see what they have to say. Thanks again!

Very nice! I like building benchwork as much as modeling the trains.

Great update, Andy. I love those Kreg joints. What kind of prep did you do to reclaim your old plywood? Belt sander? I noticed some 2” foam being used as benchwork. How do you decide between that and more traditional plywood?

Chris, I used a scraper and an orbital sander with 60 grit sandpaper to reclaim my plywood. As for the spot with the 2 inch foam, that's just an old module that i had lying around that I used to get a rough space guess. I prefer not to use foam as sub roadbed for a permanent layout.

@@AndyDorsch So I ask about the foam because I've seen it used, but haven't really done much with it myself. I have once siding on my upper deck that I have tried it on, but the glue didn't hold it to my masonite spline, so it needs to be fixed. I'm about to add a section above some staging and I wonder if I might use 2" foam and be able to layt the track and wire it, then put it in place so that if the wort happened, I could remove it in order to make a major repair to the track below. Would mean using servos instead of tortoises and some other new construction methods. Most of the guys I have seen use it are n-scalers.

How thick is you plywood sub-roadbed?

How much would you charge to build my benchwork for me? There are two tools that are kinda my bucket list tools. Because if I can get these tools, it means I have a big enough space that I have already gotten all the basic tools. A biscuit joiner and a router.
