Model railroad planning is the most important part of the build process. If you fail to plan you should plan to fail. I should know, I've failed three times in one year. In this video we create a detailed plan for my HO Scale layout the Chicago & Northwestern Marshline Subdivision. We review my limitations, my givens and druthers and my newest layout plan for my model railroad! A man has got to known his limitations!

I must admit I was pretty lost until the very last statement, then it all became clear! 😁 Thanks for the video and excellent overview of your process.

Hi Andy, Excellent video! I really like your new track plan and the method you used to determine what you want. Less can be more when it comes to model railroading. With more open spaces you'll capture the look of the prototype and your model railroad will look more realistic. You'll find that you don't need as much railroad as you might think to have a great ops session. I look forward to following your progress.-Tom

Thanks for watching Tom. Truth be told your layout (and videos) have been big inspirations to my latest re-design. Looking forward to getting some track down and starting to run trains!

Hi Andy, Thanks for your comments on my layout and videos. It really is a hard concept to grasp at first, putting less stuff on your layout and leaving open space, but it is probably the most important one you can do if you want it to be realistic. I think you'll be surprised how much operations you can have with your current plan. Sign me up for the first ops session.-Tom

Nice track plan and bigger is not always better especially when you operate most of the time alone

Thanks for the comment! I'm finding that bigger is not always better. And the Marshline in real life, was not big time railroading!

Looks like a solid, well-conceived track plan Andy. It's better to start over and build something you're going to be happy with. Good luck, looking forward to watching it come together. Best, John.

hey andy, great video and admitting to yoursself that "it not what I want" takes a lot to stand and say. I have gone through the same thing and started over. I hope you find just what makes you happy with the new plan. Thanks for sharing Muse
@AndyDorsch
@AndyDorsch 5 лет назад
Muse - Yeah, it took alot for me to stand there and look at my layout and make the decision to start over. Especially after all the blood, sweat and money that went into the first rendition of the Marshline! Thank you for watching and thank you for commenting!

Always nice to see a fellow modeler thats interested in the CNW. Currently building up a fleet to model the CNW in Janesville, WI.
@AndyDorsch
@AndyDorsch 5 лет назад
Ooooo Janesville? Refresh my memory did they service the GM plant?
@Steve51983
@Steve51983 5 лет назад
Yes along with the Milwaukee Road. Union Pacific took over with the merger of the CNW and that lasted until the plant closed in 08. It is basically an empty lot now with a couple buildings still standing. I’m planning for a late 80’s early 90’s era layout.

@@Steve51983 in my college days I lived in J-ville, worked for Farm & Fleet while going to UW-Whitewater...never got down by the GM Plant too much when I was there...What was the typical CNW power there MP-15s and Geeps?
@Steve51983
@Steve51983 5 лет назад
MP15's. I still remember to this day the sound they made while switching out loaded auto part boxcars and auto frame flatcars. Something that will forever be with me. My only regret is I wish I had spent more time recording this operation, but as always; we think something like this will be around forever until the day comes when its not and its too late.

Nice video Andy, but I believe constraint/ limitation make creativity. Making a wish list is a good idea.
@AndyDorsch
@AndyDorsch 5 лет назад
Thanks for tuning in! I don't disagree with constraints making me be creative! In fact much thought was poured into this plan. I even stood on the old right-of-way to get a good feel of how I could capture it in HO Scale.

Andy, an excellent video and a better explanation of what you want to accomplish. I model the Valley Sub of the CN in Central Wisconsin. So many of your given and druthers matched mine. I know you visit the MRH forums and I would suggest a review of Jim Six’s One Town Layout thread. A lot of what he talks about you touched on here. Congrats on making a tough decision stopping before you became too frustrated with a layout build. Are you still located in Wisconsin?

Tom, thanks for the comment. I've seen the Jim Sixx post and his articles hit close to home. Especially when he talks about his limitations!

Great video, thanks for sharing, I particularly like how you broke down all the towns on the line and picked your favorites, that was helpful since many times we want to model everything. It looks like all four towns are in a row on the line in reality but could you confirm?
@AndyDorsch
@AndyDorsch 5 лет назад
They are all in a row. Roughly 20 miles of the line.

Lovely plan and very methodical approach in designing your railroad. I really like the fact that you are using Fast Tracks to hand lay the turnouts, something that I really want to do sometime in future. Looking forward to the progress of this awesome layout! Cheers! Kaustav

@@AndyDorsch Unfortunately for me while switching from N to HO, I was lazy enough to go RTR turnouts. But then again, the planned layout will be covered i snow , so hardly it makes a difference!
