Something about ElPaso Texas that one can’t live it behind my roots will Always be there near the Rio Grande I lived in my daddy’s farm which was located along his farm Many stories to tell about my life near the famous Rio Grande The people that cross the river from Mexico seeking a better life in America mom would feed them Bean burritos n dad would let them wash up with our water pump from the ground I wonder how many lives we changed by helping this people I hope we did have changed their lives for the better cause we were the first Americans to welcome them to America I guess we did cause many years later a few would stop by n they would thank my Parents for helping them n given them a chance n believing in them some became big farmers like my daddy that contribute much to America by growing his cotton best cotton in the whole USA You see daddy was also a wet bag that cross the Rio Grande for a better future I could go on about my daddy n what he accomplished n What he gave back to America he had 5 sons n three severed in the Air Force 🇺🇸
I"m also African American and I love this song. There are days where I have to hear it so thanks to the powers that be that it exists on so many media platforms. I lived in the Southwest for many years so you should seek it out and explore it's beauty and mystique.
Chuck you are without a doubt dead on accurate. The melody and words of Marty will always rate up amongst the very best. Damn we miss Marty. His songs are now with the angels.
I seen marty when I was stationed in Hawaii might have been 1976 or 77 the man got up on stage and played for 3 hours was one of the best concerts I've ever been to
Marty was one of the rare ones. His voice was made for the western ballads. Perfection is sometimes unattainable. Marty was perfection. Thank you mom for raising me on music such as Marty's.
This song really brings back memories for me from the early 1960s. When I was a little kid my older sister used to play the song in her room and I would hear the music traveling downstairs and the lyrics painted pictures in my mind of the story it describes, just like I was actually watching a movie of it. It's a bittersweet memory for me now as my sister passed away last year, and she was the last of my family to depart this world as I am the youngest and alone now. This song will always remind me of her and that wonderful time in our family home when we were all together during my young life.
Marty Robbins was, is and will be my very own favourite Singer. He came from a poor family but died, A GREAT AND FAMOUS COWBOY-SINGER, A LOVER, AN ACTOR and A GOOD PERSON who is at the same time being remembered a GOOD ENTERTAINER by all his beloved fans all over the world. I had the pleasure of talking with him behind stage just a few minutes before he went on stage. What a wonderful gracious man. He had no hesitation to visit with me. He wore a blue western suit with suade and leather trim. He did say he was always nervous before going on, but I told him that he is one of my favorite singers, and I had at that time, all of his albums. He was happy to hear that and I said you should never be nervous as everyone out in that audience was there because they love you and are so happy to have a chance to see you in person, he gave me a shoulder hug, said thank you Red. My late husband was stationed in El Paso and we lived there on and off for almost 30 years. Every time I hear this song and El Paso City It brings back the wonderful life we had there and sometimes I cry because my husband isn't hear to listen with me. Pat

Where's the lead guitar? There's a second guitar (or it might be a mandolin, I don't know). There might be a violin in there too. You can hear a second guitar, or whatever it is, in almost all the breaks between lyrics. Listen close at 1:42 for example. Whatever this other instrument it, it isn't shown in this supposedly live recording.
@ Hey I love the song. My point is they should have shown the other instrument in this live performance. It's weird to have three backup singers there with him but not show the instrument that's playing the lead line in between all the vocals. Anyway, it's a moot point.
Actually, that's not necessarily true. At the time, since performing on stage was so important, many recording companies would record a second version for such performances, complete with slightly changed lyrics, intros, endings, and/or whatever. The performers were still lip-singing, just to a version different from the album or record release. Of course, I don't know if Marty was doing that here. By the way, recording companies rarely do a second version today (stopped many years ago) since it nearly doubles the recording costs with little financial benefit.
because of this song, i moved to El Paso and lived there 6 years....loved it. Even found a Mexican girlfriend......whom i'll always have fond memories of...... YC.
Marty's voice was magic and the songs were great but pay attention to the lead guitar behind Marty. It is part of what made this song and Big Iron greatest hits. The guitarist was Grady Martin, a great studio musician of the time.
When my dad was a young man trying to decide what he wanted to do in life, worked for the Santa Fe railroad in McCamey, Tx. He said when Marty came out with this song, a big radio station down there, maybe out of El Paso, played this song back to back to back all day for several days!
For years, every Friday night, every Saloon and cantina in El Paso would be blaring this tune. People from neighboring Juarez , on day trip to El Paso, immediately asked for a translation. Once they knew the meaning to the lyrics, they would love the song that much more. Marty Robbins was a genius.
This brings wonderful memories! They took the western out of country-western and now they’ve taken the country out of country. How sad. RIP Mr. Robbins. You are missed.
jslasher 1: THERE are a total of 5 El Pasos in America: one in Arkansas, Illinois, Wisconsin, Colorado & of course, as you already know, Texas. Arkansas: El Paso, Arkansas is a very small town founded back in 1835 that you can find right off U.S. Highway 65

I was born in 1959, the year that the Gunfighter Ballads record was released. I grew up with these songs. Also, the Glaser brothers were usually his backup group.
I've loved Marty Robbins since I was a kid. This is an example for all the kiddoes today. Back in the day when you had to be able to perform live without all the computerized tuning and modulation. Look Ma no lip syncing! Thanks for uploading.

Martin David Robonson wrote and sang this Western classic. Paints a picture of everything in ones mind. Marty had that gift. His songs were things that could be made into movies. My Dad would play Marty for me when I was little. I played it for my son when we would go on an outing then my son introduced my grandson to Marty now my great great grandson is a fan. Marty will live for ever.

Lucader delanto I don't know the population of your school, but I'd be willing to bet that there are others there who share you musical taste. Back when I was in school (1950's through most of the '60s) I was a big Sinatra fan; still am. I was surprised to find, back then, that many of my contemporaries were also fans of Sinatra, Dean Martin, Sammy Davis, and others of their era, as well as earlier singers and musicians. It's just that many young people are afraid to let others know that they don't necessarily enjoy what is current and popular. Enjoy what you like, and don't worry about what others think. (I always feel a little sorry for those whose musical taste is limited to only one style; they're missing out on a whole world of music.)
The most phenomenal music ability of Marty Robbins was his song writing abilities. I believe other artists interpreted/performed his songs better. But he created them. All credit to him for that.
My father was an awesome mandolin player who loved Marty Robbins. I learned this song for my dad and remember how glad it made him. This song brings me back to a time in my life when my father and I played wonderful music together, what an awesome voice and an even more awesome memory of the Song El Paso.
What I appreciate most about this performance is that it is live, no special sound system, Marty is playing guitar -no other back up instruments and only the two back up singers on harmony. You will not find that on any recording today. Everything goes through a computer and it even puts you on key if you aren't. That was being done for Madonna back in the early 80's. Appreciate Marty, there is no one and never will be anyone like him ever again.
james moore Marty had studio musician(s), off/on stage as needed, in addition to 2 on stage regular / partner vocalists. Both songs, here, are live and are simply some of the most eloquent vocals recorded by anyone. He had no reverb, echos, mixers or electronic synthesis of any kind - it's just pure cowboy music at it's best!!! ... btw - Marty often played rhythm guitar - just not for this recording of El Paso City :)
My Grandpa Charlie (originally from Kentucky) was stationed at Fort Bliss in El Paso. He met my grandma while here and the rest is history. They’re still together 50+ years later.

This guy is a legend. El Paso City is still to this day one of the most beautiful songs I have ever heard. And the first song El Paso is not far behind, both great songs. Edit: just heard the second song in this trilogy named Feleena. That song was just as beautiful and just as perfect if not even more so since it give more detail in to the story. That song is over 8 minutes long. Apparently El Paso came first, Feleena was the second song and El Paso City was the third song in the trilogy.
We brought the cows in for milking, but we were always running the gullies and hills(my little brother and I were doing this at ages of 6 and 7 years old) with my older sister. We were Cowboys and we had to get the herd in. Under their was only 3 cows and we felt so important doing this. Had to have a mission every day like saving the wagon train or fighting indians. Drove my sister crazy.

One time in West Virginia on vacation a band was playing and I requested "El Paso". Not only did they not know it, they were offended that I asked. I could not wait to get back to Texas where everyone understood me.
El Javier You are right. I grew up there and while there are some good people, things have gone downhill in the past few years. So glad I ended up in Texas. Texas is my heart and I knew it would be before I even got here.

Marty Was country western music , there will never be anyone that can fill his boots. He put western music on the map. I remember the day we lost him. Rest in peace Marty.
Nor quite, he brought western music back to the map. Major prior artists include Sons of the Pioneers, Roy Rogers (was also a founding member of the Sons) Gene Autry, and the other singing cowboys.
On October 11, 1982, Marty Robbins was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame. The last two and a half minutes of this video is the official presentation. Sad to say, less than two months later, Marty Robbins had passed away after a heart attack.
People should never forget this was the first big 'cross over' song, countless singers should forever thank Mr Robbins & whoever wrote this story for their careers......

Moving from Detroit Michigan to El Paso Texas. It was a dark night coming in on highway, but we could see the lights of El Paso and Marty Robbins was singing this song. That was almost 45 years ago. And any time I hear this song I go back to that time. Thank you Marty Robbins
We who are old now were young not long after the American wild west. So the singer's and movie makers of the 1950s and 60s were even closer to that great country and adventure. Imagine finding a new world and it has a wild west. Now today we're in the end-days, because everyone thinks sun day is commanded.
The ink spots, Hank Williams, Marty Robbins, Nat King Cole, frank Sinatra...etc just some of the amazing artists I wish I had an opportunity to grow up around. Being 16, I would have loved more than anything to grow up in the 1940s-1950s it seemed like such a beautiful time period.
While I understand the statement of prejudice, I believe if you look at his statement again. he was speaking at the more simple idealic time. Where it was easier to become anything you wanted. Everyone deals with prejudice, don't let it define every statement you make.
my grandmother used to play me this lp when i was a kid....im Norwegian but she translated the lyrics to me in real time and i was blown away at the age of six. I found the part of being shoot very radical cause of the nice melody and flow of both lyrics and melody.
