Irene Adler, aka Destiny, aka wife of Mystique, became one of the most important players in Marvel's X-Men comics with the Jonathan Hickman written House of X / Powers of X, and she did it by appearing in only one of twelve issues, and while her character was technically dead in the present day! Destiny's relevance has continued to grow heading into 2022, as the X-Men approach a "Destiny of X" era centered around this fascinating character.
I should note up front that much of the discussion of Destiny's history is most interesting given what we now know of the character after House & Powers. So anticipate discussion of the character's current continuity in this analysis.
Today I'll answer:
What is Destiny's comic book history, and what does it tell us about the character's role moving forward?
How does Destiny’s precognition work and how does it compare to other examples across pop culture?

I’m going to say that House of X’s return of Destiny in life 3 was chilling. And I do love how Destiny’s precognitive powers act. She’s essentially playing through probability. And Hickman connected her and Moira because, in Greek, Moira means Destiny. The resurrection in Necrosha does have two of my favourite moments of the event. One is Destiny consoling Blindfold, letting her know why things happened and gave her peace for a while. It’s wild that Blindfold actually is dating Legion. The other one was the reunion with Rogue and the first time they refer to each other as mother and daughter. Part of me does wish that Destiny left Mystique a note to go to the institute on the day of Kitty and Colossus’ wedding to surprise her with seeing Rogue and Gambit tie The knot. Although, as we know, one of the signs of the Marvel apocalypse is Gambit getting Any approval from his in-laws. Shame we never see Rogue and Blindfold talk about anything. I mean, that’s a pride story begging to happen. And Destiny, I don’t know if she’s morally better or worse than Mystique due to her more behind the scenes string pulling but you can tell that she’s always doing something to help people in the long run. Even if that means some horrific stuff has to happen. And you are so right. A mini series where Mystique and Destiny are being Holmes and Watson? I want it like chocolate. Honestly, after the Fox movies kept attaching Mystique to guys romantically and not even connecting her, Rogue and Nightcrawler together? Finding out that so many of her actions in the comics were committed because of her love for a woman who, despite being over 100, has the most insane leg game in all of X men, was truly a palette cleanser.

Thanks for making this. I have always been confused as to why Destiny wanted to kill Robert Kelly if the future would have become a sentinel takeover. I guess the answer would be that she’s not always right or at least can’t see certain things. Hopefully we get some more clarity about her powers & motivations in upcoming issues :)

Love the thoroughness and generous spirit of your analyses. And I too am loving Hickman’s sci fi take on such a grand level. Looking forward to how Destiny is fleshed out in this coming arc. On the family relationship side, have I missed a scene where Rogue discovers her adoptive mother has been resurrected and then is reunited with Irene? Or is this too early in the unfolding of the storytelling? Just a character moment I’d like to see, given how much more visible and numerous lgbtq parents and families are in the world. As a 55 year-old gay kid with a queer parent who has professionally supported such families, a scene like this would be meaningful on so many levels.

I don't think it's happened. I remember in an interview with Hickman he said he wanted Rogue to have a bigger role in Inferno, but there just wasn't space. Which is a bummer!

It’s frustrating that he left out a potentially emotional scene between the three, which could have also humanized Destiny more for the reader. Instead we get really unnecessary scenes of political seats getting filled (Psylocke & Bishop to Commanders/Colossus to Quiet Council), which are very “world-build-y” and have no thematic ties to the event. They could just happen in the characters’ respective series. He also wastes a lot of space doing his classic “Hickman-isms” like retelling story to reveal what actually happened. It is already implied that Mystique disguised herself as Xavier and Magneto to resurrect Destiny in issue #1. We don’t need to see the whole sequence again. I love Jonathan Hickman, but Inferno was really clunky, and some scenes were just badly written.

Happy New Year! I thought it was generally understood that Claremont ghost wrote those pre-Twelve Alan Davis issues. They almost read like issues of Claremont's X-men Forever.

I wish hickman would of stayed on for the next 10years. He said in a interview they had a year by year plan for the story of xmen spanning up to 10yrs....now that he's gone I bet it's just going to go to crap...xmen issue 1 just was crap..it was weird and some voltron crap...

I'm going to throw this out there because we're talking a character, Rogue, that was introduced 35ish years ago, do you think maybe Mystique and Destiny were grooming a minor (we are talking the 1980s)?
