The SDS sheets from the Marvel website are really what prompted this video. The first two are from the Marvel website, others are listed as well. See below.

I have found some other interesting SDS sheets on these materials.

The bottom line with this video and these two substances is this. No one person commenting here can PROVE what the components of each of these products contain. People say ' I hear it helps remove moisture from air tools'. Oh really? Who is to say that MMO doesn't do the exact same thing? Have you ever tried it in your pneumatic tool? Or used MMO in a pneumatic tool long enough to actually determine the effectiveness? Probably not. Manufacturers of products are required by law to provide SDS sheets disclosing the major components of the products they produce. So what is the magic part that 'removes' moisture? No one can PROVE what is in their gasoline, fuel additives, soap, kitchen cleaner, etc. So unless there are chemists here that do a detailed chemical analysis of what is in each of these products, what you all THINK is in there is irrelevant. I have used MMO in my glow engines for nearly 30 years and never has it damaged or not protected an engine of mine. That is good enough for me and I will continue to use it.

If you have access to a good hydrometer or two of specific gravity ranges that these products are within it is fairly easy to determine if the formulations are different. It won't give you the exact components involved, but it will show they are either different or closely similar.

I don't have one of those, especially a good one.

I have and it gunks up valves. Mmo might work alright for light use in a home setting but heavy pneumatic use. Upon swapping facilities over to air tool oil it's a night and day difference after a week of running air tool oil if the components are not past the point of no return.

Are running the mmo IN the fuel mixture? or as an after run engine treatment cuz the little red bottle they sell at the hobby store smells just like the mmo stuff!

I use MMO in my air tools for years. Not a problem. I just fill my old air tool oil bottles with mmo. Air tools work Good still and smells good while using. My oldest air tool is 10 years old. Still works. Thought I would just give my experience.

The Marvel Mystery Oil for air tools where I work is red and smells like regular Marvel Mystery Oil. So I always thought it was the same

Regular old Marvel Mystery oil seems to work just fine for me as well. It’s cheap and does the job. It’s like any oil discussion, everyone seems to have a different opinion and they will all argue with you why theirs is better many times just because that’s what they were told by someone’s friend who knew someone.

Interesting.. When my air tool oil bottle is empty I'm just gonna go to Walmart and buy the regular MMO and refill it. The bottle the air tool oil comes in is very handy!

Thanks for info! Brother gave me his trainer plane with an os 40 fp for Christmas, hasn't run for 20 years, all gummed up. Took it apart to clean and reassembled it using a bottle of gun oil I had handy. Hope I didn't screw it up.

Marvel air tool oil is great for air tools not so much for your eyes. I was putting on a set of brakes and just loaded the air impact with oil and blew it my eye I'm on day two after the incident and I'm experiencing irritation of the eye and sinuses. Has anyone else done this?

I've been told that air tool oil helps remove moisture from the tool. Thats a good thing for rc engines too. Most air compressors squeeze water out of the air and leaves it in the tool. As you know tank air compressors have a drain valve in the bottom to remove the water. That being said I use the good smelling stuff too. I don't know why. Just like the smell.

Me too Barry. I use the Air tool oil because it comes in a small bottle and is easy to just flip up the spout and put it right where you want it.

That is pretty much what it is formulated for.

I'm building a compressor from scratch. Much cheaper fyi for me. I'm gonna install an air dryer on my compressor leaving tank. Additionally I want to try out using silicone lubricant as a daily lube for my nail gun vs these lubricants. I feel this stuff still causes friction on the o-rings while traveling through the sleeve. Any opinions on using PTFE?

Your test showed 2 things: viscosity and color. By watching the flow test, they acted very similar. I bet the level of protection is the same. MMO vs MATO probably comes down to added dye and marketing. I bet they do the same thing. I've been a professional mechanic since 1999.

You think the air tool oil is good for leatherman multitools? I work at an O'Reilly and grabbed a bottle today but not sure if its what im looking for. I usually use 3 in 1 but leatherman says to use a teflon based oil..so im on the hunt. I have some Lucas extreme gun oil as well..what am I best off with?? Thanks

I don't see why not.

Probably just a dye to make it red.... Or the air oil is filtered better

In my personal experience regular mmo will swell certain rubber orings and completely destroy some rubbers but that's lesions learned in person experience with the original

I think it's entirely possible these oils are similar enough that the MSDS are the same. One could contact them to confirm.

I have always been one to use multi-purpose products. LA's Totally awesome cleaner is a great example. In addition to being used as an after run oil, I have used MMO in my cars and motorcycles too. I like getting the biggest bang for my buck. I try to stay away from 'specialty' products because the cost gets jacked up and the volume is generally very small.

3:33 mins Oh yeah Regarding that oil you put on your 45, Is Hoppe's still around? I used to hunt and used their products and l always loved the smell of Hoppe's No 9

@@dmrcflyr2 It was the Hoppe's Number 9 Solvent (only) that had the nice smell I was referring to. That was back in the 1950s - 70s. We used it in our shotgun barrels using a pushrod with wire brush, then a cloth patch soaked with the stuff wrapped around the wire brush. At that time, shot was made out of lead. Anyway, I suggest you buy a bottle and try it on some really bad engine part that you don't care about and see if it works better than La's Totally Awesome especially on some old part that has varnish from castor. Shoot, I'd do it in a heart beat. You never know - it could be one of those 'Bingo / eureka' moments.
@dmrcflyr2
@dmrcflyr2 5 лет назад
Perhaps, but if it is hard to obtain and more expensive than LA's, what is the point? The reason I use LA's is that is it readily available, multi purpose, and inexpensive. I really have no need for another cleaner nor have I found one that fits the same description.

Man Dave! I just bought a 4oz. bottle of air tool oil at Menards for $1.68. I was actually going to mail it down to you until I checked Marvels MSDS info and found the flashpoint to be 128 deg. which is not legal to send thru the mail. I wonder if you might shake up your bottle and color check it again. My stuff comes out pink, smells ok but not as good as regular Mystery oil. The small 4 oz. bottle is very handy for my meager needs.

I'm home for lunch. I did just shake it up and put some on a white paper plate. It does have a slight hue to it but still much different that MMO.
