Some of Reg's statements like here saying Hearns was like a Baby Giraffe going for his first walk or another fight saying "He's hanging on for dear life like a sailor clinging to the mast" or "Hanging on like wet laundry" said about one fella "He's like a walking hat rack, hardly strikes terror into your eyes" said kid Milo looked like a sawn off George Foreman, never meaning any offence just says it as he sees it,very clever bloke really very well liked was Reg. He was at Normandy on D day and he stepped out of a Sherman tank straight on to a mine and it blew his leg off,hes had a false leg since 1944 so 41 years since then on this day 15 April 1985,15th April, same date TITANIC sank. Sorry for the history lesson lol. Loved Reg though.
Supposedly Gutteridge was interviewing Sonny Liston and some of Listons entourage were trying to intimidate him- Gutteridge said something along the lines of ‘so, you think you’re tough’ , took a knife and stuck it into his prosthetic leg to a stunned response before revealing the truth - respect all round afterwards
One of my favorite fights on ITV, because both Marvin Hagler and Tommy Hearns both went to war and in the first it was just that. The late Reg Gutteridge and the former world welterweight champion Don Curry both on the mike in Las Vegas, thirty-five years ago. Also, my other favorite ITV boxing epics are Sugar Ray Leonard against Roberto Duran and Tommy Hearns thirty years ago and thirty one years ago and both Reg Gutteridge describing these battles. Nick gives us more ITV boxing classics from the late voice of boxing on the working class channel Reg Gutteridge who will never be forgotten. From Birmingham to Las Vegas and from Manchester to Tokyo Reg has been commentating on ITV especially on World of Sport
**Marvelous Marvin Hagler** **Peace** **Tommy Hearns** **Hitman** Both Of These Superb Boxers Performed **Outstandingly** The Best **First** **Round** In Boxing History!!!!! Eventhough, **Hagler Won** Hearns Fought An **Incredible Fight** With A **Fractured Hand** To Add Along With His Perseverance. **Magnificent Boxing Match**
You couldn’t be so wrong. Neither Hagler nor Hearns wouldn’t even come close to destroying Canelo because Canelo would NEVER step into the ring to fight either one of these two great fighters under any circumstances. Canelo knows he’d be KO d in 1 by Hearns and be out on his back in maybe three by Hagler. In this era you didn’t fight these two because you wanted to. You fought these two because if you wanted a title these are the guys you had to beat.
@@formerlybernard6460 isnt it crazy how fanboys just BRING UP CANELO??MAN THEY HATE HIS LIGHT SKIN AND RED HAIR....NOW THATS A FACT......AND THERE DUMBA_SES FORGET ALMOST EVERY FIGHTER THAT EXISTED IN 40 YEARS USE CLEMBUETEROL.YOU JUST CANT HAVE HIGH LEVELS AROUND WEIGH INN.HELPS YOU PISS MORE.ITS NOT A STEROID.FANBOYS ARE DUMB AND MIS INFORMED AND SEARCHING FOR SOMEWAY TO FEEL TOUGH BY AFFILIATION .THAT WOULD EXPLAIN THE STUPIDITY.BUT YEAH BOTH WERE ATG.ATG FIGHT.
Great commentary by the Brits (compared to the US broadcasts) understanding that Marvin was fighting his fight (hard inside) and landing the heavier shots throughout the fight. Excellent analysis, Hearns right hand was not impacting Marvin. What a Champion
@@Yette these Hearns guys hang on to this broken hand forever (and Hearns was a great fighter!), but Hagler beat the shit out of Tommy from the jump, he ate every one of Hearns's best punches and just kept coming forward. Anyone honest who watches the fight can see this! Just look at the end of round 2. "In-fighting" was Hagler's specialty, but this was joined with a MONSTER chin. If only Ray Leonard tried the same strategy! Marvin would have destroyed him. The English guy's call on this match was spot on, "even though Hearns weighed a half a pound more than Hagler, he was still the smaller man." Exactly! And Hearns was a GREAT fighter! But trying to "out tough" Hagler was an INSANE strategy. Very few tougher boxers in the history of boxing, if any!
Hearns said he spoke to Marvin the day he went for the "jab" . Marvin felt something wrong and went to the hospital. Dead the next day. So sad and what a loss. RIP Marvin
@@billjones3497 what? Apart from a dead man? A very tough, fit, strong, healthy man, with no previous health issues? I'd say it is pretty conclusive proof. Same as my brother in law. Had a stroke the day after the jab, and died 2 days later.
Hearns said he broke his right hand on Hagler’s head with his first solid punch. I think it’s at 0:54. Said he realized that Hagler’s head was a weapon and that’s why he shaved it. Said it felt like punching a bowling ball. Punching Hagler after that, especially in the head, must have been horrific. Yet he did for two and a half more rounds. But between the broken hand and Hagler coming right at him, applying incredible pressure and blows to the body and head, no way Hearns survives. I’ve often wondered if Hearns could have won the fight if his hand had not been broken. Probably not, because he was also tiring. But maybe, since he would have been able to throw harder punches to Hagler’s head.
I actually saw this when it happened -- through closed circuit TV. I never get tired of watching it, over and over, through the years. Legendary fight between two great fighters. I sure agree with commenters who idolized Hagler, one of the greatest, perhaps the greatest, middleweight. But back then I was scared of Hearns and a lot of fans naiively compared these two via their common opponent, Duran, and going into this fight most people were saying Hagler needed to stay away from Hearns and go the distance. I'm sure Marvin was pissed that anyone would think he needed to do that against a true welterweight and, as Curry discussed here, it was really the other way around. But you can see that Hagler opens up with a thundering attack and, like many warriors, Hearns just could not help but get into a slugfest. If you're a fan you've seen that kind of fight many times, usually great fights. But here Hearns was simply outgunned by the true middleweight. I later found out how classy Hearns was outside the ring. I believe he changed weight too many times and fought too many big fights, it took its toll. I read somewhere someone said he's now broke?! Also I always love to hear British commentary.
ITV was the best back in the day.. reg and Jim was a superb combination and then you have Brian Moore and Martin Tyler with the football Ron Atkinson Saint and greavsie ....I watched at the tail end so missed the truly great events...1990 world cup and Benn v eubank1 are my first real memories of sport on itv...
One big reason this was a war is something a lot of people don't remember. Hearns was out for revenge against Hagler because Marvin had KOd one of Hearns friends and fellow Kronk fighter William "Caveman" Lee, in the first round a few months back. You guys wanna see another great fight, watch Caveman Lee vs John LoCicero, it was a war!!!!
Can you get the British call for Ali Frazier 3? I was lucky enough to hear it once when the fight was replayed at a movie theater a week or two after the fight. Since it was an early showing and no one cared I watched it again but the second time was the American version It made for an interesting contrast
Imaginen la emoción del referee, tocando a los peleadores en pleno combate, oyendo los impactos, definitivamente la mejor ubicación para ver una pelea...
,"""""The first bang is like walking into minefield """ Reg Gutteridge. What a commentator.. Reg fought in the second world war. Im sure he was part of the D-Day landings. You may have to goggle it, but im sure he lost a limb.. Marvelous Marvin Hagler Rip my friend.
@@hensleyjosephina6253 Floyd would be flat on his ass against either one! Floyd Mayweather is the most overrated, undefeated fighter in boxing history. Leonard, Hagler, and Hearns-ALL 3 woulda beat Floyd. IDK I'd Duran would've, or not, because Floyd was a very good boxer, and Duran had trouble with good boxers. Not to say he wouldn't have won. I also think Benitez woulda beat Floyd.......
@@hensleyjosephina6253 In fairness, it's not an even matchup. Mayweather was even lighter than Hearns, a true welterweight early in his career. Btw a lot of fans don't like Floyd, but he's actually an amazingly skilled fighter but kind of changes the game a bit, and it can get dull to many many fans.
That just goes to show you how strong Hagler was. He threw a long overhand right that just clobbered Hearns , knocking him into the following week. RIP MARVELOUS MARVIN 🥊 🥊
He had all the skills I can think of. He could box, he could infight, he clinched when necessary, he could brawl . . he was a southpaw . . and he could switch! And underneath all that he was a tough angry warrior who has hungry as hell and dodged for big money fights for a long time. Over his long career leading up to his championship he continued to learn and grow. RIP Marvelous One. I was shocked by his death, kinda strange and premature.
With all respect to the commentators... hearns was in a way finished after round one but hung in there only to be pummelled. 6 love over confidence after a quick demise of Duran.
@@formerlybernard6460 Damn, I wish Calzaghe could have fought the top Americans earlier. It is hard to really compare him to his era because he fought Jones and Hopkins past their prime. But thanks to RU-vid I have seen several of Joe's fights and I am impressed.
WWIII! Warriors at it without anybody taking a step back or making excuses. Today's fighters would not even have come close to either Hagler, Hearns, Sugar Ray L. or Duran, out of his prime and a Hagler a bit on the decline at the time of this fight.
The "right hand that caught haggler off guard" that Hearns thru before the 12:05 time stamp broke his hand. He fought the rest of the fight with a broken dominant hand. He hit Hagglers head. Said it was like punching a bowling ball.
Back when boxing was BOXING. None of this "Ive beaten you...but lets have 2 more....rematch clause bullshit". We want a champion to defeat someone then move on to the next challenger and beat him, then UNIFY all the victories into holding ALL the belts. Look at the HW division; Fury avoiding Usyk with the 2 of them being called World Champion. An insult. The champion must prove he is THE champion, undisputed.
I agree. But times have changed . . Today fighters have more control over their careers and make obscene amounts of money at the elite level. Maybe a good many of them today are not as hungry as someone like Hagler, but they are superbly trained and healthy, plus they learn from great fighters of the past.
Curry selling Hearns short...Hearns just couldn't keep pace and ran out of gas and legs ,as he was wont to do......Hagler had the better legs ,but was still taking one hell of a walloping . Hagler would have been lucky to have lasted 12 at that level of punishment , but Hearns needed a lot more than luck to get there...
He really sold Hearns short by saying Tommy Hearns fought the wrong type of fight from the start. Look at how Hagler went at and after him .. he gave Hearns no choice but to fight a war. Hearns tried to move even as early as the first round to a point but Hagler was so relentless in the first round ... he was more than cutting off the ring .. he was actually quickly walking Hearns down even putting one foot in front of the other at points. Hearns fought like that in round one .. which took so much out of him (and Marvin) basically because Hagler gave him no choice. Hagler knew to beat Tommy he HAD to stay close and make it a war. He knew staying outside or going slow could have been his doom.
You must have watched a different fight ti me. I saw Hearns THROW a lot of big swinging punches. Very few connected, and only 1 had any impact. Hagler had him on the run from the bell. To bd honest, Hearns didn't have much to offer. Since this fight, it became known that he had a fragile chin. But he put on a great show, which is now LEGEND.
These are REAL black fighters! Mayweather Floyd Jr is just running and tapping all night! In 3 rounds Hearns and Hagler did much more action than Mayweather Floyd Jr whole career! ! Hearns broke his hand but kept on fighting! Respect both of them! A real war not just a fight! 😍😻🦊😍😻
@@milojanis4901 ok, then, go ASK BLM ( black lives matter the same question you asked me!) It is YOU speaking of racist ... What about RAPPERS they say the "N" words throughout everything they sing which is an INSULT to their OWN race that sales on the market.. So before you ZAP someone do your research first .. I never spoke any racist.. tell Hearns or Hagler family they are not black.. see what answer you get . 😸🤐😸🤐
He didn't really have a chance to. Hearns got to him right away and I think Duran wasn't sure what to do. Duran's worst loss but he came back. Also Duran's loss to Benitez was kind of embarrassing.
It was a fake stoppage. The signal from the referee to ringside officials came when he checked on haglers cut. Hearns gave it his all but when they realised he couldn't KO hagler early on and he was gassed they cashed him out.
Wqtch again. Watch the secind half of R2. Hagler pinned Hearns on the ropes and destroyed him. I'm pretty sure he was finished at the end of that round. Hagler just hunted him down after that.
@@Yette the second half of ROUND 2, MMH had Hearns on the ropes, and just pounded him. I tried counting the punches, and think it was around 20. I'm pretty sure that did the damage and Hearns was finished.
Whatever are you talking about? Try listening to CGAVEZ vs TAYLIR. Pure American biased bullshitttt from start to finish. American commentators just ramble, talk nonsense throughout a fight, and miss the action. Or try Duran vs Barclay. Non atop verbal diorrhea, praising Barclay, and barely mentioning that Duran was giving him a thumping.
