I have never been a desserts/sweets person, I always preferred savoury foods, but I liked trifle, I just haven’t eaten it for many years. After a big savoury main course when I was younger, I used to find trifle a treat and cooling/refreshing. People are so snobbish about it. It is a nice dessert (“sweet” is my favourite expression).

There are numerous ways to make trifle and no need to argue as it's basically cake base, fruit of choice, jelly if you wish, custard, cream.

Please don't encourage the Americans to make tiramisu and call it a trifle. They have no idea what makes a trifle a trifle, and they have unlimited willingness to make themselves look foolish on internet 🤪

This was considered a luxury pudding in the 1970s in Britain... But how nice that Mary Berry at least has the standard of not putting any of that ghastly cheap jelly that makes trifle disgusting. Fanny Cradock would never have used Sherry either, which is very vielle dame.

OMG love Mary Berry. Jesus, she's only improves with age. I love the way she through this trifle together, delish, but looks like total slop!! . But you can't deny her self confidence in dumping this mess together!! Can't stop laughing. I really love her today on The Great British Baking Show, she is a English national treasure! The cream may intentionally been made a bit sloppy, but the trifle had yet to set. If you are familiar with trifle then you will know the consistency once it sets, and I bet it tasted better than anything you get out of a shop.

Available in, and not especially expensive, at least 2 mainstream British supermarkets to my certain knowledge. You may be elsewhere of course. Alternatively make the sponge yourself it needs to be a little stale to work well. Keep for a week or so in an airtight container and it will be fine.
