Beyoncé might be a technically skillful vocalist but I personally am more into singer-songwriters because they put so much personality and creative effort in their work and they often deliver deep, meaningful messages in their lyrics. These are actually main reasons why Mary J. is holding on such a high position in "my personal chart" :).

These two women did amazing on this song for anyone...a lot of people can't do classic songs justice but these two women are different they have so much soul..I am a huge fan of Mary J. Blige and the Dixie Chicks....race has nothing to do with it soul is soul

Hurricane Mary just had way too much soul, gust and power for the Dixie Chic. This is a soul song, and Mary ruled with an iron fist and thats the bottom line because Stone Cold said so.
She understands the assignment and always brings power and the message to life in any song. She doesn’t live off of being technically correct, but I can show 20 singers that are but they can’t bring life to a song like Mary can. The true essence of a gritty soul singer 🔥🔥🔥🔥

I agree! I do like Beyoncé and Destiny's Child BUT I fully and truly think that Mary is FAR better than Beyoncé will never ever be. So I obviously prefer whole-heartedly this version to any of Beyoncé's, Christina's or whoever. Beyoncé and Christina sell music by sex and nudity, but Mary sells it by pure talent. I respect more artists like Mary, Alicia Keys, India.Arie, Lalah Hathaway, Jill Scott and Lauryn Hill than Beyoncé because they've kept it real and sold music by true soul and talent.
Both of these women have soul in their own way. It's just a matter of whose style you prefer. I much prefer Mary's but I'm impressed with how well Natalie Mainz sang it.

Had nothing to with getting off drugs. Mary took more vocal lessons to help thin out her vocals and preserve them. She wanted more range. She still has some rasp not as much like she use to but some. Her vocals are even more powerful now than they use to be. Her teacher taught her how not to blow out her voice because she use to sings hard and straining. Unlike some other divas who have blown out their vocals over the years exp. Mariah!!
+Terrell Williams Lord knows she needed that badly, too! Mary knows what she wants to do, but her vocals won't allow it because she simply does NOT have the Register. So sadly, she strained and sounded, frankly horrible to the trained ear, in 90% of what she attempted. What got her over was the fact that she mostly did COVERS of HITS. I'm glad she got a vocal coach, but even still, a teacher/coach can only do so much. Some people are born with talented Registers, unfortunately, Mary J Blige is not one of them; therefore stage presence, performance and "hit songs" has to support her efforts immensely, especially when singing live where there is no help from synthesizers and other electronic and digital devices to make her sound ok or on key. NO SHADE, JUST TRUTH. I like her personality, but personality will only take you so far.
dmnds979 well I never said she didn't have a register. Everyone has a register. In fact Mary is 4 oct. Mary was never a technical singer. Due to her heavy husky tone it only allowed her to reach certain ranges. She has a great rich tone in which is why she is versatile in the industry. Its a acquired sound. The uniquiness of Marys voice is what pushed her through to contend with her peers. Hell no singer is in deed a technical crisp singer. That would make them pretty much robots. Also thats a difference in being a trained singer and raw talent. One who is able hear sound and play with a melody, than one who is taught hear notes.
I knew Maty had a great soulful voice, but I was very pleasantly surprised by how good Natalie was. Great version very soulful from both women. Beyoncé who?

um...i listened to a ton of covers of this song, and Mary did a great job, but Natalie was brilliant too. Definitely the better voices to have sung this song.

I know how so many of you adore Mary, and you've every right to believe so, but I think Natalie Maine here performs far better with real grit and sincerity and range of voice. I really don't like how Mary keeps breaking her notes as if she can't sustain them; it's ugly. Oh well, still a great performance by both. Robert.

Natalie performed like any singer would do. Mary performed like any singer wouldn't do. She's a soul singer. They're air-benders of notes. They twist, bend, and shape notes into some sort of vocal style that can't be duplicated. A lot of people can do what Natalie did.
