And Rick's first band, The Mynah Birds (with Neil Young), made a song in 1965 "It's my time", that heavily inspired Robert Smith (The Cure) when he wrote "Boys don't cry".
I work at a dispensary and I hear this song at least a couple times a week...never gets old!! Plus, being on the Friday soundtrack makes it nostalgic! Some many great times listening to this song, you can't go wrong ❤❤❤❤
Both of you are just adorable together. I saw Rick in concert twice in the early 80's and he always had 2 giant lit joint's come out from both sides of the stage when he sang this song. After the song was over, the rest of us were lit too. Lol. RIP Rick James. Oh, Btw, Marijuana in Spanish translates to Mary Jane.
That's the beauty of the song. He wrote it so if you don't know about weed, you just think it's about a girl. It's called a double-entendre. You can take it either way you want.
1978! This song dropped when I was in sixth grade. It was all over the radio. Videos were still a couple of years away and the double entendre of this song kept the cannabis reference sufficiently at bay from the censors. When the intro came on -- with those string flourishes, that bass slap, and that guitar run -- they gave the signal to crank it up! Those flutes slay. That bass pop slays. The guitar work slays. The part where he sings "do you do you do you" in a tape looped way always used to catch my ears back then and still does. Burn down the house level fire! Rick James biggest hit by far was "Super Freak" from 1981. A few of his other hits are "Give It to Me Baby", "You & I", "Ghetto Life", and "Fire and Desire" with Teena Marie. As legend has it, Rick James went AWOL from the Navy in the mid-1960's and fled to Toronto to escape the Vietnam War. While there he formed a band with Neil Young called The Mynah Birds and they got themselves signed to Motown Records, but the whole effort fell apart when James got caught trying to reenter the United States.
His best song in my humble opinion, Remember my local radio station in Saginaw Michigan was a little hesitant to play it because of course they knew what it was about
Saw Rick James in concert at Madison Square Garden back in the 80s and he had Teena Marie with him to sing " Fire and Desire" !! It was an awesome night !! R.I.P Rick and Teena miss you both !! 😢 🙏
There are so many great Rick James songs with himself and Teena Marie. He also started the Mary Jane Girls in the early 80's. You would like to hear Rick James and The Temptations "Standing On The Top"(1982") also the Mary Janes Girls songs "Candyman"(1983) "All Night Long"(1983)
My mama played Rick James all the time I remember waking up Saturday mornings smelling food cooking and hands some super freak playing in the background That's the reason why everything I do I do it to a beat thank you Mama
James was from Buffalo, went to Toronto to dodge the draft, started The Mynah Birds, the band The Sparrows swapped a member with Mynah Birds, Sparrows became Steppenwolf. Check out Steppenwolf's Don't Step On The Grass Sam
Asia, girl....as far as not realizing Mary Jane meant weed you are not alone. I was a full age woman, probably early 30's, before I figured it out. High 5 👍to you !!!!!!?💯
You two would be blown away by Marcelito Pomoy performing "The Prayer" on Wish 107.5 live. The video is from inside the studio of a live radio performance.

I went to see Rick James in concert in Detroit long ago and Prince was the back up band lol, it was the Fire It Up tour and when he performed ,2 larger than life joints that had smoke coming from them were part of his stage set up..great performer ..but I'm a Prince kind of lady. Great reaction video !
I wanna ask as a favour-- since that video got taken down would you all react to Whitney Houston " I Have Nothing" for a Reaction??? It's okay if you don't cause I love you both very much but it would make me happy to look on your reaction to that song many time!!! Much Love Asia and BJ!!!
Love you guys and I don't miss any of your online shows or just one reaction at a time! I am from Dallas also so maybe sometime we will run into each other...lol..although Dallas is rather big!
He also wrote another, darker song about drugs called U Bring The Freak Out. Great sounding song, musically but lyrically it spoke to his struggles with the harder stuff.
Please also react to Skillet they have 2 females in the band John Cooper lead singer/Bassist, Korey Cooper John Cooper's Wife Background Vocals/Keyboards/ Rhythm Guitarist, Seth Morrison Lead Guitarist, and Jen Ledger Background Vocals/Drummer, Seth Morrison joined on the Rise Album they had another Lead Guitarist called Ben Kasica he left after the Awake Album, and they had another Drummer called Lori Peters she left before the Awake Album. A few of there songs (Not Gonna Die, Hero, Monster, Legendary, Feel Invisible, Whispers In The Dark, Rise, The Resistance, Surviving The Game)
