One of my favorites. My oldest sister (who passed away this last week) took me to see Mary Poppins when it first came out in 1964 when I was nine. Magical movie then, and will always be. Thanks for your thoughts on the music and details of the story.

Great video Aimee. I feel the same about this incredible piece of music. It’s one of the most perfect compositions. I used to hate Mary Poppins when I was young (my mother would put it on the TV). A few years ago, after my son was born, I rewatched the movie for the first time in about 25 years and finally understood the message behind it. It’s not about Mary at all, not really. It’s about the parents remembering to love their children and to not take them for granted. And to be kind. What a wonderful message and it’s so nice to hear Mr Sherman confirm that that’s what Walt’s mission was.

I have departed friend - a wonderful musician that played this for his young kids as he sent them to bed at night. Amy, thanks you for making this. Just what I needed on my drive home from work. This isn’t only one of the greatest movies ever made- it also lives in my head in a way that only a few movies can because of how often I’d watch it as a small child. Mr. Banks’s side of the story was lost on me back then but once I was grown it hit me like a bus. The Feed the Birds song itself is the perfect mix of weight, sadness, and hope.

Dick Van Dyke has often spoken of how immensely happy he was to be a part of this movie, and I once heard him say that he especially loved Jane & Michael's song, "The Perfect Nanny." Karen Dotrice & Matthew Garber performed it so beautifully. With David Tomlinson's very moving performance as the father as he realizes what's important, learns to reconnect with his family, appreciates how good it feels to give, and connects with the joyful child inside him...and the combined wisdom of the wonderful, magical nanny and the delightful and perceptive chimney sweep -- so marvelously played by Julie Andrews and Van Dyke -- both helping a family to mend, Mary Poppins has always been one of my very favorite movies; I still love re-watching it, and love listening to the soundtrack. Also, I "love to laugh," and I use peppy music as the "spoonful of sugar" to help me stay energized as I clean the house! Thanks for honoring the Sherman brothers, and for this wonderful journey along memory lane.

Greatest movie ever!

It has been brought up that not only the father was neglectful but so was the mother always requiring nannies. She wanted women’s rights but crumbled if her husband said NO. One of my fave movies…the book was written by an expert in mythology who was friends with Joseph Campbell. It must have been an exciting time in London. So many contrasts…The excitement of inventions. But the over crowding and unsanitary conditions of the cities with the industrial age. And yet amongst all this drab and dreary, there was color and light against the blackness of the skies from coal. In NYC we burned coal up until the 60’s.

Aimee Nolte Music, this is an excellent analysis of a timeless classic film one that I never get tired of watching. The Sherman Brothers wrote so many memorable songs. Feed the Birds is one of them. I also love "It's a Small World (Afterall) 😊👍

When I was a wee lad, all of seven, I was taken to see Mary Poppins. "Feed the Birds" made such an impression on me that when we came home, I sat down and played it on the piano. (Not the bridge, that was beyond me.) Thanks for recreating the movie for us, Aimee.

This was my 1st choice of watching your content simply to confirm that your thoughts did indeed resonate with mine. Such wisdom and life lessons from a beautiful story ans exceptional film. How many 'grown ups' forget these as they move through life. How overlooked this film becomes when its considered just a children's film, when in fact it was an 'event film' everyone saw at its premiere. I'm subscribing!

Hello Aimee, I was around 12-13 years Old when Mary Poppins came to our cinema. My parentes bought the LP, and also the LP. I always Saw the Movia as smovse for kids. I Saw it again 10 years again, and realized that it was also an adult movie. I love the film, the characters and all the great songs. You opened my eyes to try to play this great song “Feed the Birds”. Thank you so much.

I was living in London for 2 months in 1999.. one of the first places I headed upon arrival was the steps of St. Pauls bc of Mary Poppins. I was there late in the evening one weekday no one around and took it all in. Took a great photo too.

My understanding is that first the Sherman Brothers wrote a song for Julie Andrews that they thought would bring the house down, but when they presented it, it didn't have the impact that they thought it would and subsequently was scrapped. This somehow led to the composition of Feed The Birds which I get literal goosebumps just thinking about and likely everyone making the film did too. The orchestration takes the song into some other dimension and when the glockenspiel comes in I melt completely. How the world kept spinning after this song was written is beyond me. 🤓 An interesting fact: The same karaoke track can be used to sing both "Feed The Birds" and the 1957 Debbie Reynolds hit, "Tammy." Same meter, same tempo same chord progression.

1979-80, I flatshared with a couple of student nurses and another academic student. Manchester Street, London, W1. Top two floors with access to loft and, from that to the roof. View was just like this film and like CS Lewis, The Magician's Nephew, so you could crawl in a tunnel across the ceilings of all the houses in the whole road. Cold winter, pipes burst, so we filled up buckets in the basement for all water needs. Tiny little gas fire in big living room, frost on inside of windows, slept in sleeping bag under blankets wearing woolly hat and socks. Might look similar from outside, but what was student digs for a few £s a week will now be valued in £millions.

I agree with you about the brilliance of the song writing for this movie. It's the music that makes the movie the gem that it is.

I forget what happens in the movie after he gets fired from the bank, and opens up his heart, and song and dance... I know they live happily ever after, but if they had enough money to pay the mortgage and taxes, and the servants' wages, saved up already, then I suppose the bank job was merely a hobby or habit... and dude's home life must've been pretty bad if he hung out with those pirates and coal miners at the bank, as his hobby! I used to wonder why it was always "former CEO or investment banker" who had a realization and now is a potter/painter/etc in Monterrey. Not sure what my point is. I've spent more time listening to music from Mary Poppins than watching the actual movie. I think Richard Dawson's song "Civil Servant" has a similar vibe of rebelling against your soulless job, with such a triumphant change in attitude by the end that it begs the same question... What about tomorrow? Are you going to look for another job, or back to business as usual, or tell the landlord to shove it, and then go traveling around the continent, or... In America, it's either be an NPC and work like an ant, or else be deplorable, or a trustafundian "say yes to everything" hedonist, or on a mission to save the world, or else you'd better be crippled... I know someone who's literally pretending to be retarded (amnesia etc) in order to get public assistance, and I told him that alone should qualify him for a crazy check... but he's afraid they'll cut him off completely if he tells the truth. Plus, he's trying to get these old folks to give him their house, and he thinks being retarded will endear himself to them... and I gotta say, they're gullible (i.e. trusting) and it does seem to be working. So, I started literally feeding the birds, but then that same dude's family complained that the birdseed was enticing rodents. Which it was (chipmunks, mice and 2 types of squirrel) and the rodents and songbirds were enticing raptors and foxes... but that's no reason to cancel the bird assistance program. It was sort of near a storage shed, but not near any house... nevertheless, it's easier to be like "well, we got complaints" and I didnt want that to be the hill I die on, if you know what I mean. Which unfortunately is a social mechanism by which a lot of bad ideas continue existing. Anyway, I was the one paying for the birdseed, so I guess I saved some money. Not enough to move to Monterrey tho. I bet the Victorian bankers would be horrified by our behavior. I also know a few people who drive around (a truck and a jeep) for hours PER DAY EVERY DAY just because they're bored... they'll go get an ice cream from somewhere else an hour away, or just go people watching. Even if only 100 million people on Earth did this every day, that's still a lot of oil burned out of boredom. So, for the sake of future creatures on Earth, I do hope that we all stop the insanity really soon. Your message in this video is a good one, and I hope we can carry it into tomorrow and the next day too, and beyond. See you next time.

Very good. Mary Poppins is one of my favorite movies, too. Have you seen the documentary The Boys: The Sherman Brothers Story (2009). It’s very good, but also heartbreaking. Though they were brothers and worked together, there was a lot of tension between them. It seemed like Richard, the younger one (quoted in your video) hoped for the kind of family reconciliation between them that happened in their movies, but it just didn’t happen.
