youre the only person i know who uses mashine in cubase i literally been waiting 6 years for someone to come out with videos like this. i knew i could do so much more than making a track in mashine and dragging audio clips i to cubase and work from there. thabk you for your hard work and dedication to this series of videos WE ALL THANK YOU

@@jefgibbons i have one question, there might be a video on this so if there is just point me in the right direction. so i did everything you did in this vid, proper input and output on mashine&cubase, and when i press the pads it records on cubase. but, when i put the sound on mute in mashine the sound wont playback in cubase, nothing will. even if i drag it as a midi clip. on the mix console in cubase you can see the sound registering but i have no sound coming out my speakers. please help if you can 🙏🏾

@@jefgibbons honestly man this is the reason i stopped making music a few years back cause i could never get the sound to come out even tho the mix console said it was picking up sound. i know its probably something small but its such a pain i never figured out i would glady pay you 75 dollars for a half hour skype call to see if you could help guide me through it. i have no problem sending it to your paypal before, but your help would be greatly appreciated

@@stephentarpley8898 Not that I'm an expert, however if you "Mute" a channel on Maschine then you have muted the "sound", you will still see a trigger in Cubase (or even Maschine) however that's just midi information, and not the actual sound. Not sure if that helps, or if I misunderstood your inquiry.

Hi Jef! I tested the Track Preset feature on Cubase 12 and it works for saving all of this. Then, you just load a new Maschine on an instrument track and then the track preset and all routings are preserved. And they don't get wiped by loading a new kit. Cheers.

Managed to get this working for the Maschine Mikro Mk3 - thx Jef and Nico. For Mikro in the controller editor you need to select the pages tab on the right and select Pad Page H in replace of clicking group H button on full Maschine+. Other difference is control knob is not 4D so can only map start/stop and left right. Works perfectly including the ribbon.

Congrats on the 200th video Jef. I went a bit further down the rabbit hole with maschine integration in Cubase. I set up a template so that I can easily record all 16 channels of audio in real time in cubase. I also dedicated one group of maschine to be a dedicated midi out channel so I can play other VST's in cubase with the notes and chords of Maschine. Where things really started to get interesting is adding the Atlas drum vst in the mix. I use it to generate patterns for drums in Maschine. I can either use the Maschine kits, or the kits generated by Atlas. Either way I end up with a whole new world of drum sounds and patterns I would never have come up with before. I do wish Maschine had more than 16 audio outs since its nice to route drum sound to their own channel in cubase. If you do that you have none left for the synths. In addition perform effects only work at the group level which is a bummer if you track out drums individually. Jef,thanks again for the amazing content. I've learnt so much and if I ever win a Grammy I'll be sure to mention you.

@@jefgibbons This is the video that got me onto the idea of using Atlas. Although the principle works on other drum programs too. The midi drag and drop of sequences from Atlas to Maschine is what makes this cool. Perhaps, it might work with other drum programs like EZ drummer or NI Drumlab. Great videos and a lot of helpful hints. I have used that hybrid Maschine-Cubase setup a while ago. But meanwhile I couldn't care less about Maschine, since I detected the full potential of the Groove Agent 5 workflow. Since then I only use Maschine sample content within Groove Agent any more - and have a MUCH more straighforward and more creative workflow using Groove Agent 5 in Cubase.

Thanks so much. Your work is always so concise. Love how you found those hidden commands! Do you happen to know a command for opening the Focus Quick Control pane on the top of any open plug-in? I spend a lot of wasted time trying to get the durn mouse exactly on that tiny top right box. Hovering over it with the mouse describes that command as "Show/Hide VST Quick Controls." (And if you're talking with Nico in the future, can you put a bug in his ear to try to remain consistent with his mouse-hover description and the comman description.)

Trying to use these devices as VST instruments is a pain. After purchasing a micro some years ago it has been doing nothing but gather dust on a shelf. This should be far easier to implement.

This is absolutely Great , i want to make a Template for my Cubase 12 and my Maschine Studio , but i have a question . When you have your Midi Tracks in Cubase with the Different Drum Sounds and you want to Mix Them in Cubase , you need the Sounds in seperate Channels . How can i Split them and Route every Sound to one Mixer Channel in Cubase ? Thank you very much !!!

Splendid video Jef. Much appreciated. A lot of this information is cross-compatible with other DAWs. For instance, I am primarily a Studio One user, but I find this information relevant as I use the Mikro MK3. As a suggestion, I'd like NI to create templates for all, or most, DAWs. This would save musicians from "busting their groove" on tech nonsense and keep with the flow of creation. I'm irritated when I'm in a good flow and must deal with tech difficulties when I want to add something particular. Thoughts?

thank you. its very frustrating i might never get the hang of it. Workflow Killer. Too much custom routing / midi channel selecting. But it's better than using the Maschine "DAW". Perhaps i should load those samples from Battery instead. Wish NI would update to a more automatic cubase workflow.

Hi Jef. Thanks for the Maschine Mk3 midi map. Works a treat, except i cant get any of the transport functions working. The look setup correctly in the midi map manager. Now on Cubase 12.07 and the thing i can see different from yours is the midi in and midi out in the cubase channel is set to maschine master event output and event input. Any suggestions. Thanku !

Say I want to put kicks in group A snares in group B claps in group C hi hats in group D and E how would I go about that? In group A the kicks all play but in group b etc. I can't get them to play even though I see the signal coming through but no sound... What am I doing wrong. So this means I really could use Maschine + as a vst "expander" offloading synths and kits from my PC. Thanks for thjis Jef. I feel like NI could do a better job programming Maschine and make an optional "Daw" mode so templates didnt have to be double checked each time. I love my MK3 but I hate that Maschine is not a DAW. I just do not understand why NI refuses to appreciate this limitation, it has been a very common complaint for years. It is beyond frustrating and eventually I will likely move over to another system and framework altogether as a result.

Your video is very helpful!! I am using Maschine with Cubase. The problem is that when a try to record a pattern on Maschine it creates patterns to all groups that receives Midi In, from Cubase. FOR EXAMPLE: On Group A I have an instrument and I record midi part on Cubase directly. On Group B I have a drum kit and I want to record a pattern. If I try to record live in maschine using the pads it receives midi on Group A and creating a pattern there. So the thing is : can you record only to a specific group a pattern even IF maschine receives midi information to other groups?

Great video! When I use the chord feature from my NI Komplete Kontrol keyboard and record it into Cubase I only see the notes that I press and not the chords(like in your video with Maschine). Is there a way to change this? And can I use the chord feature for other plugins and not just for the Komplete plugin?

Not as seamless as Maschine, but you will have to create a separate midi track and set the input as the output of the komplete kontrol instance you’re using and set the midi output as not connected then record onto the midi track. Then drag the recorded midi to the KK track to hear it is one way to do it. Yes you can use non komplete kontrol instruments. Native instruments have instructions on their support page.

It would be tricky, you could make one sound in a group be on a different MIDI channel, just like the "instrument" tracks I show in here....

Question... I use Cubase 12 pro with Maschine mk3 controller and This method works as you described so thank you for this but, When I put a sound into keyboard mode (which works in the Maschine2 software), the sound changes pitch as I play different pads but after recording midi into Cubase it does not play back the pitched notes, I do see the different midi pitched notes on the Cubase timeline, it just doesn't play the recoded pitched notes, It only played the original 1 non keyboard mode note during play back any thoughts on what I can do here or am I missing something?

Would love a Cubase 12 native test video for the M1, and also make it 48k vs. 96k? I record in 96k, and can absolutely tell the difference between the two. I use a MacBook Pro 8 core intel on Cubase 10.5 and recording in 96k, but am maxing out my CPU, so I'm definitely considering upgrading. Thanks, and love your vids man!

Hey Jef. Really helpful Tutorial.. but i was just about to go Insane... i´ve done everything exactly like you explained it. Sometimes it Works and Sometimes Not... In Cubase 11 Pro an Cubase 12 Pro i had some weired Midi-Input Recordings.. Pressing the Pads works fine but Sometimes the Notes in Cubase would be recognized in a different Pitch. I Just found out that im Not Insane and the Problem seems to Come from Some Sound-Kits.. (The Pads are not Linked or anything) One Problem Kit is the "Eatn Up Kit" from the Basement Era Pack. Maybe somebody could take a minute and Check if this Kit creates Some Crazy Stuff while recording in Cubase.. Its Pad 8 and 9 and some more above. trigering the Pads is mostly fine but when recorded the Midi Data for this Pads Is Wrong. If the Kit works fine with you, then i just should reinstall them. Thank You

I experience the same weirdness. Was loading the same preset as Jef as as test (BahDue Kit), and when I went to the more textured sound on the higher pads, the midi notes didn't correspond. Did you find a way around this issue?

@@MadsGranumMusic Yes. In my Case the Problem was/is that the Kits wich have this Trigger-Record Issue in Cubase had wrong settings in the Sound Slot - where the Choke settings are. The Root Note was Set wrong for them and i had to set them Back to C3 manually for every Wrong Pad.

Hey, I don't understand I did everything on the first part of the video (for a drum kit), I checked twice. But when I play what I recorded, I don't have any sound... I have signal but nothing in my ears..

Is it okay to substitute a Maschine MK3 for everything you do with the Maschine+? I need to consider which to buy

If it’s connected to the computer they’re exactly the same. Would you ever need to be away from the computer? If not, go for the mk3! Also, all techniques shown on the M+ work on the Mk3.

Hey, I have problem with sending midi information from maschine master to midi channel one. It just isn't working.. In my cubase(midi channel 1) i changed "all midi inputs" to " Maschine Master - event outputs. I don't even have "maschine master MidiOu"t, only Event out. And it isn't working..

Hi Jef, I watched your video and have followed your steps numerous times, however, when I try to record from my Maschine plus into Cubase 11 Pro on Mac I record the instrument but also the pattern of that instrument from the expansion. I'm unsure as o why this is happening. I must have missed a basic step, but I can't figure out what it is, Would you have any ideas? BTW thanks for all your videos and tips, they are a godsend!

I’m guessing you have +pattern selected when you load a kit, try again and deselect that when you load it, then hopefully it fixes your problem!

Hi Jef. I reconfigured with the +patterns off. Everything looks fine and the MIDI is recording in Cubase. However, I'm getting no sound when I select playback. Did I miss something?

really like ur videos .. but it seems like i have a problem with this specific problem trying to work my way around this video ... when i try to do the group setup and following every part of the video , when i press on the midi channel it seems that once i play a pad it plays another pad automatically ... lets say i play the kick pad i instantly see and hear the clap pad working as well , as i tried figuring it out only thing that i can understand is that once i switch the channel number and host , it switches from normal one pad play to multiple pad plays ... can anyone please help ? thanks in advance

Shoot, it’s definitely one of the steps that is missing… I remember having that problem… definitely had all sounds selected when you did “sounds to midi notes”?

@@jefgibbons definitely was , tried it multiple times , yet it still was playing two pads at once .. i really hope to figure it out while i try to redo the steps .. but if u know any way through it , it would help alot . thanks for replying !! not taken for granted

Can you not save the Maschine setup as a project file and preserve ALL the routings? Rather than Group and Sound templates that loses some settings.

Yes! But when you swap out with other groups or sounds you’ll still have to adjust a few settings…

@@jefgibbons Ah, yeah. I went back to the video and saw you do it. You went past it kinda fast so I missed it the first time. Well that is super annoying if you want to browse for kits in this setup. Maybe it is still better just to load up the number of separate Maschine instances you need for each project then, rather then messing with a big template that still needs constant re-routing. Hmmm...

Why do they make it SO DIFFICULT to use? I can hear the drumkit, and its recording the MIDI info, but when I play it back I hear nothing.

Modern and sterile. Go for vintage warmth and integrate Cubase with Soundtracker v2.3.

Is it not massively easier just to use the Maschine sequencer and drag out audio of patterns once done. Sure, you don’t get all the midi editing of Cubase but can’t help but feel that all this takes away from the point of Maschine being a groove box / standalone sampler/sequencer. I especially can’t imagine why you’d load an instrument/synth plug-in in maschine in Cubase…YMMV of course just seems unnecessary. Edit, not trying to criticise - well explained video

Good points Geoff. For me, it's times where I want to work with my fave kits and things in Maschine, but I'm stuck in Cubase for other reasons. I do a lot of arranging for a band with Maschine stuff, I need to do my arranging in Cubase for time/tempos changes. I also use Cubase for film scoring, but I often need Maschine in there too! I still start most things in Maschine though, and do end up dragging in patterns in those situations.

using Maschine and Cubase this way allows you to alter/edit midi in Cubase as the song evolves. Much easier to me than exporting audio only to find the need to do it again and again as revisions are needed. Using Maschine + this way would mean offloading processing to Mashine while still being able to build a song in Cubase. I'm likely to buy Mashine + on the strength of this video.
