Indeed this may presently be the case, but they are way ahead in creating grid level energy storage, this is, after all what the city is all about. It's the home to many different experiments. They are already using massive pressurized oil tanks to store heat which in turns runs generator, within a few years they are confident they will be running 100% on renewable energy.

Yeah, doing real fine even though there are numerous reports of it being shut down and all but a ghost town today. Personally, this was something I was really hoping would happen. I really wanted a city of the future to pave the way and show the world there is a future past most of the energy we currently use. A city that pushes for technology with the greatest minds and scientists on the planet. Unfortunately, Masdar doesn't seem to be that city.

Gotta say, with all the sun in the area, the region they buildt Masdar in is kinda the obvious place to start building zero-fossil fuel cities. Interesting, concrete waste as road base is an old idea, heck back in the 80's we once had people complaining there wasn't enough concrete waste for our roads in Denmark. Nowadays we only have to resurface them, so it's no longer an issue, but still a fun twist to the discussion on waste. :)

This is not the case for concentrated solar power (CSP) which the city is using alongside photovoltaics. CSP uses similar technology as fossil fuels. Instead of using coal to heat up water to create steam, CSP heats oil, or a brine solution, to incredibly high temperatures that boil water to create steam. The oil is heated up using the sun and the oil will stay hot well into the night. Some systems can run for 4 days with no sun. Check it out on wikipedia, it's really cool technology.

very good ideas and some good work. but many unanswered questions... How about the water management? where does it come from? Desalination of the Persian Gulf water? What about the steel recycling?? did someone understand what the make out of the steel waste? I didn't. In general, besides the recycling of wood and concrete, the other recycling ideas looked more than dreams or ideas, not like really eco friendly ways of recycling things... steel needs to be heated to very hot degrees to reform or reuse it... also plastic needs to be melted and cleaned of small waste parts in it...

I laughed when the spokesman said Masdar's version of PRT doesn't have expensive infrastructure, as if the city Undercroft isn't the most expensive PRT guideway ever built. They should have gone with a guideway like the Heathrow Pod, and will have to if Masdar PRT ever expands (no current plans to do so?).

Not sure if Masdar is using or plans on using Liquid Metal Batteries in the future, but that might solve the energy storage problems.

As Robert pointed out, it's surprising that a country synonymous with oil production is investing in renewable energy technologies and next generation smart community and building design. Clearly they see end of the road for oil. It is just as surprising that a heavily energy-dependant country like the USA is making very little effort to plan for a post-fossil fuel world.

All the trash could potentially go to a land fill and the gases it would create could be used for power. I know they do that in the US to power a city, don't know how green it is though.

I know this is going to get me flak, however I watched a Shell video which here. watch?v=yFr-OocOb7Y&feature=plcp . This paints a very different picture of Masdar and is not totally dismissive but points out something which is often forgotten, Masdars energy from Solar goes away at night and they dont have storage systems so rely on the incoming grid then. I woudl suggest people watch the Shell video to hear other sides. Love the show tho, always watch it.

Hey Good idea but I found out that families are having less and less children so when the worldwide birth rate ~2.1/female we won't need to decrease the pollution output as the population will flatline, flatlining the pollution output. Although we need to combat CHINA and illegal logging. Logging is worse that pollution output.

Can anyone elaborate, and explain how "the city is (being) oriented 45º towards (?) the sun" results, in conjunction with all the other measures, in a 10º reduction of the average "street" temperature? Visual/animated explanatory links would be greatly appreciated.
@MsMan602
@MsMan602 8 лет назад
The average city has lots of tar roads, because tar absorbs heat the city's are generally hotter than the surrounding areas. As well as the other things like the 45 degrees to the sun to get the most shade, the city will actually be very cool

A very nice idea however its easy to implement when you can simply pump your money out of the ground, I very much doubt it would every have existed if it were not for fossil fuel which is a little ironic but not to say a bad thing.
