Can you make sweet potato pie with regular potatoes?
Thanks for watching Everyone! I’ve been really busy this week, and haven’t had a chance to transcribe the recipe to this description box yet. You can still find it at the end of the video.

Always both, and then I look to see what other spices I'm feeling, too. Grabing the cloves, cardamom, almond extract, maybe caraway seeds. Oh, now I think the savory version should have caraway seeds...

I am looking through a collection of Amish recipes published in 1966 called Pennsylvania Dutch Cook Book of Fine Old Recipes. It has a Berks County Potato Custard Pie. It’s flavored with lemon. The eggs are separated so the whites can be beaten until “rounded peaks are formed.” It’s served warm.

Back in the 50’s my Aunt backed pies and cakes almost daily out of her Eastern Shore of Maryland farm kitchen. She delivered them to the local restaurants and convenience stores for a little money. She made a wonderful white potato pie, very similar to a sweet potato pie. It was one of my favorites. Wish I had her recipe.

Awesome concept. Great base with so much potential for flavorings: - maple syrup - spices (nutmeg, cardamom, ginger, allspice, clove, anise, etc) - dried/candies fruits - chocolate - honey - berry jam etc etc Or go savory like you said - since it’s white potato, make a gnocchi pie. Add a tomato sauce layer, basil, garlic, olive oil - any pot pie flavors (chicken, turkey, beef etc with a mirepoix etc) - prosciutto/guanciale/bacon/ham with cheese With such a simple base, the possibilities are quite literally endless! Awesome channel Glen. I love what you do. Thank you.

I would bet there was more spicing/flavoring going on, even in a depression kitchen, if my family is any indication. My grandmothers used cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, allspice and vanilla for sweets. Salt, pepper, sage, bay leaf, mustard seed, and dill for savory. Well, except for Uncle Henry, he decided that since the price of pepper went up he wasn't buying it any more.

My family has made a savory potato pie for years. It is a recipe from my mother, but I'm not sure where she got it-quite possibly from a long-time family friend who is the daughter of Italian immigrants, born and raised in Chicago, Illinois. It has become a Thanksgiving holiday staple. 2 cups mashed potato 1 lb ricotta cheese 1/2 cup sour cream 2 beaten eggs Garlic Salt & Pepper Paprika Rosemary 1/2 cup chopped scallions Grated Parmesan and/or Romano cheese Makes one large/deep pie. Mix all the ingredients well and pour into a standard par-baked pastry crust (our family often uses a premade crust to use up leftover mashed potatoes). Spread the grated cheese(s) on top before baking. sauce.

There used to be a restaurant in the Dayton, Ohio (Smithville) area a few years ago that sold a depression era recipe "white potato" pie. It used vanilla and nutmeg and was a little flatter than a pumpkin or sweet potato pie in volume but the flavor reminded me of a sweet potato pie. The owners said their mother (or grandmother, don't remember) made the pie during the depression with ingredients that they commonly had. I loved the result but sadly they disappeared and the recipe died with them and their business. If you like sweet potato pie, this was / is a winner!

I agree with the savory idea. Roughly mashed potatoes with a few chunks left, some browned ground meat, and onions. Cheddar cheese on top, for the last ten minutes. Use shredded chicken, and a take on Chicken aka King, Bulk breakfast sausage, onion, bell pepper, and 6-eggs for about the last ten minutes or so, yolks still liquid to eat it hot, and fully set of you were going to have it cold for lunch. I work on remote sites, and am always looking for lunch ideas beyond sandwiches. A slice of a savory version of this would be great. and, by the way I make savory cheese cakes with seasoned cracker crusts, and various meats as fillings.

Glen you and I had the same idea at the same moment (well the same moment in the timeline I was watching this) of leaving out the sugar. I have a request. When I was a lad growing up in Northern Ontario, someone - not my Mother - made a carrot soup that was to die for. Normally I'd say that it was my Mother, because it WAS to die for and Mom was a tremendously excellent cook/baker, but she swears it wasn't her. I think it was our next door neighbour but sadly she hasn't been with us for a long time. I know this soup was not creamy, wasn't pure liquid. There were very small chunks of carrot in it. It WAS a thick soup, not watery. If you come across this, or know of it, could you please make this recipe. Simple recipe I know but it was OH SO GOOD. Good enough to remain a warming memory after all these years. Thanks.
