Something about the tone of ME2 sold it for me. I'll never forget the opening of the game and walking through a destroyed Normandy in silence... or the first time I walked into Afterlife and heard that music (followed by the first f-bomb of the series lol) ...or literally anything involving Legion

After a quick, and clearly not thorough, scan through the comments, I haven't found anyone (even Big Dan in the video itself) who has mentioned this aspect of ME2 yet, but the music in this game was FANTASTIC. Especially during the Suicide Mission, the music just completes the game. I can listen to the soundtrack of this game and get goosebumps every time. Jack Wall, Big Giant Circles, Sam Hulick, and David Kates all contributed to make an unforgettable score for this game.

If Mass Effect 2 would have maintained the broader character skill customization of Mass Effect, I would have been so happy! Mass Effect 2 is still my favorite, but it was so close to being nearly flawless.
@acuyra
@acuyra 2 года назад
I always thought ME1’s class customizing was a little TOO broad. You have a lot of places to put points, but the differences are so minor and vague that you don’t really notice much difference until every 5 or so levels. Once you get near the end of the game, you’ll probably have most skills filled up, so most character builds look and play about the same. I think ME2 and ME3, while giving less points, gives you bigger changes with each skill point spent, and the branching paths offer more variation. Especially in 3, there are a lot of different ways to build each class.

38:44 As a fun fact, probably by accident, but in Polish dubbing of ME2, Aresh and Niket happen to have the same VA, making some accidental parralels between Miranda and Jack, and the people tied to their respective pasts(And in both cases we decide whether to let them kill the guy or spare him too) XD 39:54 Also Aresh somehow DOES survive when not killed!(Guess he has Rana Thanoptis-like talent of outrunning nukes...), he pops up briefly in ME3 news report saying that he died defending kids on some colony from Reapers.

I remember being traumatized playing Overlord the first time. David's reveal stuck with me for a couple of days. Finding him in ME3 was balm to the heart. On subsequent plays I am always yelling "I'm coming, David!" every time he garbles at me from the screens. It's ridiculous, an old lady yelling at her monitor, but there it is. My biggest complaint about ME2 is the hitstun off of flame attacks. It's very easy for Pyros to stun-lock you to death once you're in their effective range, and it made Mordin's recruitment mission a frustrating early-game difficulty spike due to the Blood Pack pyros in the corridors leading to the fan controls forcing me to retreat every time.

The one thing about ME2 that kinda bothers me is that the overarching story is not focused on the impending Reaper invasion but instead it was about a new enemy that may or may not be related to the Reapers, it was not until the ending that we finally return to the trilogy's main threat which is the Reapers. This makes the second game feel disconnected from the trilogy since the first game was about the impending Reaper invasion and 3 IS the invasion so 2 felt more like a side-story out of the three games.

One thing I always recall is in ME1 when Garrus takes you to confront Dr. Saleon, you have the option to either kill Saleon or attempt an arrest. If you choose to just kill him, in ME2 when Shepard tells Garrus that he is worried about him and how he is acting, Garrus will comment on how sometimes swift vigilanty justice is the better option and how Shepard taught him that lesson. On top of that, if you chose to kill Saleon and then constantly try to stop Garrus from doing violent acts, he will comment on how you are contradicting yourself by stopping him doing what you had already done in the past

I'm not exaggerating to say Mass Effect 2 saved my love of gaming. I hadn't played a game in over a year, and thought my video game playing days were done. On a whim, I looked up some "Best of 2010" gaming lists. Pretty much all of them either had Mass Effect 2 or Bioshock 2 as #1. I resolved to visit GameStop and pick out whichever one was cheapest. For whatever reason, ME2 was on sale for only $20 so I picked that up. Best $20 I ever spent in my life! And yes, my introduction to Mass Effect was in the sequel. I thought that might bother me, but it turned out just fine. By the end of Mordin's mission on Omega, I was intrigued. After recruiting Mordin, Garrus, Jack and Grunt, I was hooked! There was something incredibly compelling about building up a crew for your ship, and tackling the galaxy together. The writing in Mass Effect 2 is just incredible, as is the cinematography and music. Everything just comes together to make a masterful package. The only slight knock is that I feel the gameplay isn't as compelling as it could be. I played through ME2 four times in a row, before picking up ME1 to flesh out the story. Now I've played through all three games so often I've lost track of just how many. Mass Effect 2 will ALWAYS have a fond place in my heart. Only a masterpiece could have brought me back into gaming.

At 1:12:30 you mentioned that choosing to destroy or save the Reaper at the end does not have a significant consequence in ME3. However, if you only gather the minimum war assets (which I've never done myself), it will have an effect on the ended. There's a range where you can only have one option in the final decision; and that option (Destroy or Control) depends on if you destroyed the Reaper in ME2 or gave it to Cerberus.
@V1rtualFlod
@V1rtualFlod 2 года назад
I love all ME games, but ME2 is actually my least favourite of the trilogy. I'm not saying it's a bad game at all, I just liked ME1/3 more. People will probably hate me for disagreeing with the overwhelming consensus, but I'll list the reasons why someone might say that ME2 is overrated. 1. The stakes are underwhelming in comparison to ME1. Had the main plot of ME2 come before ME1, the trilogy would have had a better sense of story progression. 2. There are only a handful of actual main story missions, the rest of the game is recruitment/loyalty missions that are largely disconnected from the main threat. 3. You fight against mercenary gangs for the vast majority of the game. 4. Each level feels more "gamey" rather than a real location, with lots of corridor shooting on a strict linear path, lack of player choice, and a gamified end of level screen. 5. The citadel was cut down into a tiny stacked layer of floors rather than the sprawling station it was in ME1. 6. The gameplay while more polished is extremely safe with little flair and less RPG depth, and becomes very repetitive on subsequent playthroughs. 7. The abilities are very shallow with the most effective abilities being about direct damage and defense stripping (warp, incinerate, overload). 8. The world of the game doesn't feel as diverse as its predecessor, which included a lot of unique elements for each level (different music, new interesting aliens like rachni and thorian, a range of aesthetic themes). 9. The dialogue scenes became more cinematic, which look nicer but make you feel like you're directing a movie rather than roleplaying a character. 10. Planet scanning for upgrade materials is boring. I don't care how much you love ME2, if you say you enjoyed scanning planets you're lying to yourself. There are more things that I can't think of off the top of my head so this list will have to do. My favourite ME game is ME1. I played ME2 directly after completing ME1 for the first time, and while I enjoyed it a lot, the things I loved about ME1 were stripped away from the experience. ME3 definitely feels like a sequel to ME2, but neither feel like a proper sequel to ME1. They feel like completely different games and I've always felt a massive disconnect between ME1 and ME2/3. ME2 feels like a great game to play, but ME1 feels like a great world to explore. That sense of worldbuilding was lost in transition to ME2, and it was the aspect of the game that I was attached to the most. At the end of the day, they are all amazing games in their own way. It comes down to what you value in a game. If more polished gunplay and deeper characters and relationships is what you like ME for, then I can see why people love ME2. For me it was the feeling of stepping into this completely new world with some much to explore and choices to make. So ME1 will always be my favourite. I don't necessarily think that ME2 is overrated, I feel like ME1/3 is underappreciated. And with how zealously people will defend ME2 from any criticism, it can be pretty disheartening to have a different take on the trilogy.

4. Yea, that got me really mad the first time I played that game. I ended up loving it, but ME1 just hits a soft spot with quests like Noveria, where you talk to people for 30+ minutes, and do the opposite of what they ask to get the sprawling plot to unfold. 6. You say ME2 gets repetitive after subsequent playthroughs, but ME1's gameplay doesn't last half a playthrough. 7. But have you played Sentinel? Tech armor is takes over the game, to the point where you can play without cover.

@magnusprime962
@magnusprime962 5 месяцев назад
I disagree. The story of Mass Effect 2 isn’t the story of the Collectors’ plot, it’s the story of Shepard recruiting and building up a team to go on a suicide mission. Your squadmates aren’t just a part of the story, they ARE the story. As such, you’re constantly advancing either by recruiting new people or completing their loyalty missions. It’s a major shift from the first game’s structure, but it’s also a major part of why this game worked and became popular. The question of the game isn’t simply “Can you stop the Collectors?”, it’s “Can you and your team survive stopping the Collectors?”.

Although I wasn't a big fan of the loss of the major RPG elements from me1 to me2, I think the large roster of well written characters is what makes 2 my favorite of the series. Also the fact that me1 has so many missions tied to the mako and me3 vanilla endings left a horrible impression makes me2 a winner simply from the "flaws" of the other two games. This is also coming from the perspective of someone who has beaten me1 100% 10 times or more so I have more hours in the OG mako than many. Legendary mako felt loads better.

Im one of those that think the original ending for mass effect 3 was on point, it left me hollow inside, i felt the pain in my chest, the emptiness, it kind of was what i was expecting it to be, but even more more powerful, "raw" you could say... But i do agree with Mass effect 1 being way too much Mako dependant, that was clearly a huge mistake, i love the Mako but the terrains were repetitie as fk, there was no need to make you travel for 5 minutes, when it could be done in 20 seconds and the experience could be smoother.
@pepicisam
@pepicisam Год назад
@@ImyoCello I agree to an extent. The first time I played through the OG me3 I had all the war assets needed. I played tons of multiplayer for fun so that was a non issue. The one problem I always had though was the lack of an ability to save Shepard across the board. Like the illusive man almost had what he thought was control and I feel like that's what the crucible should've granted in the control ending. In the fusion ending Shepard dies yet again but he is literally already the fusion of man and machine so it doesn't make sense for them to die there. The only ending (and I didn't know this cause I chose control since blue=Paragon so I made the blue choice first time around) where Shepard doesn't die is the destroy ending which ironically the catalyst tells you will kill you but it doesn't. My friends had to tell me about that little nugget where he inhales for a second after the credits. I guess overall my issue was the lack of that sense of triumph the first two games give you after fighting against all odds and then the third game you essentially have to kill this against all odds character in order to get everything done. Honestly, I feel like javik should've been the one to fire off the crucible. His one purpose is vengeance as the last prothean and this would've given him the opportunity to achieve that for his race and would erase him instead but he would've completed his singular task with that act. Either way no use complaining. I enjoyed the series and 2, even with its limitations, is the most satisfying to revisit (lair of the shadow broker always will be a masterpiece).

My main criticism of ME2 is that it doesn't really add anything to the overall main story, and really just serves as (an admittedly really good) canon filler arc. Also, some quality of life stuff. The fact that your medigel and heavy ammo don't refill between missions makes no sense at all. In ME2 I could play without using cover whatsoever, there it just gives some damage reduction, with the option to nuke your own shields, if you want to die. But infiltrator is a night and day improvement, despite enemies seeing you while invisible rather frequently... Going in for a kill with SMG just felt like flexing, when one shotting someone with Widow is much cleaner. Abusing that harpoon gun, being able to fire abilities makes that so much more than a panic button, or win more ability. Combo explosions being expanded is cool, but kinda felt like they took over the gameplay, like as a vanguard I was doing fire ammo + slam combos for way too long. The main problem with ME2 is that the plot is terrible. The squad recruitment, the side missions, is where the game obviously shines and makes it so special. But the main storyline is short, simple and makes no sense. When the entire squad inexplicably decides to the leave the normandy for no reason and the crew gets abducted - I mean that is unforgivably bad writing. The game should've been about preparing for the Reapers, forging alliances, etc. To that end the arrival and lair of the shadow broker DLC are actually better than the entire main plot imo, because they lead into ME3 and help deal with the central reaper problem. The collector's are kinda insignificant in the grand scheme of things. It used to be my favourite in the series but I think it's my worst now just given how bad the plot is.

Personally ME1's story was much better, Bioware also went way overboard on nerfing biotics (it needed nerfing because biotics in ME1 were way too OP) but like I said they went overboard (biotics in ME3 was perfect). They completely removed mods which I loved in ME1, no weapon stats (why?), couldn't remove helmets from most armors, completely removed planet exploration (sure ME1 needed some work in that regard but why remove it entirely?), different types of ammo were now powers (wtf?), made your squadmates wear incredibly stupid outfits on the battlefield (Jack and Miranda for example) when all of your squadmates in ME1 wore armor. There's a lot of stuff that I considered a step back compared to ME1 that they brought back in ME3 which was nice.

So little happens when it comes to the main plot lines from ME1 such as the reapers and their imminent threat, genophage and the geth and quarian ark. The suicide mission is awesome in both the tension built throughout the entire game to ship section in which you have zero control in the moment whether or not squad members die with the only way to avoid people dying during the section is insulating the ship before the mission and even then the music and atmosphere keep you on the edge of your seat. Then there’s the collector base which leans into the idea of specialist roles brilliantly the only sud member that really doesn’t have specialized role is Mordin but even he had a purpose in being recruited. The way the mission was designed was intended to make certain that it took carful planning or looking up a guide in order to get the best outcome and even then without a guide it was almost guaranteed that you would lose someone on the first try. The thing I like the most is the sense of weight that your actions have not just in the third game but in the ending of the suicide mission

Between terrible minigames, the dumbing-down of so many gameplay aspects to appeal to FPS players rather than the RPG fans that had always made up the core of Bioware's fanbase, the "genetically perfect beauty" of Miranda when the developers gave her the freaky face of a woman born and raised in the Uncanny Valley, and of course the infamous "thermal clip" debacle, ME2 finds itself in the rather odd position of being a very good game that also had *so much* wasted potential!

ME2 was the goat back then, but compared to the other ME games in the LEGENDARY edition, it's slightly OVERRATED. Today it's combat System and choice of Skills and Weapons feels extremly limited and no-combat-role-clunky. ME1 automated cover system was laughed upon, but it got reintroduced in Andromeda as superior Gameplay. ME2 created a great illusion in storytelling. 80% of content of ME2 are basiclly filler episodes in a Sci-Fi series. But the players do'nt realize that, because episodes are about recruiting the Squadmates and gaining their loyalty to learn more about the backround. The Suicide Mission is one of the most exciting mission of all time, but remember what the developers sacrificed: to cut cost for production, nearly all Squadmates who can die become side character in the next game; only Wrex, Mordin, Tali and Legion play a significant role in ME3 and only Tali is playable. The suicide Mission with so many potential character perma-deaths is a very costly trick that can be only pulled once with such an effect. How would you rate ME2, if all ME Games of the Legendary Edition are running with ME3 graphic and visuals, and Squadmates cannot die in the Collector Base just like illos? (Imagine ME3 got a better ending with Mission Earth being the real Suicide Mission instead)

It might be a controversial opinion, but ever since ME3 ending controversy, I always saw ME2 as the straw that broke the camel's back. While the general premise of a suicide mission is very solid, all in all ME2 did virtually nothing to develop overarching ME plot about Reapers and the cycle of extinctions. Essentially we spend most of the time helping our characters rather than figuring out what the hell Reapers are up to and why they need to harvest everybody. ME2 defies conventional trilogy structure of exposition (ME1) -> development -> culmination (ME3). It does nothing in development department and hence ME3 pretty much had to do everything in one game.

45:24 I always wondered why you need to resist Morinth's mind control to be able to side with her anyway and betray Samara. Wouldn't it be the other way around? Wouldn't she try to mind control you to side with her and betray Samara instead? Its like she used mind control to kill herself through you basically.
@Malfeasance1

Just got through that section on my LE playthrough and had that same thought. My theory for the second question is that she simply recognizes Shep's strong enough to completely resist her, loves it, and wants Samara out of the way anyway. For the first part I'd guess it's a sort of gated reward for pursuing and passing the tough personality check.

You have to be able to resist her or the story doesn't make sense because she would have you as a mind controlled thrall if you kept her alive.

I don't think ME2 is overrated, I just think ME3 is very underrated. All people talk about when it comes to ME3 is the ending, but beyond that (which I don't think was even that bad with the updates and Citadel DLC), but I genuinely think ME3 improves on a ton on ME2 and deserves to be remembered better.

When it comes to the gameplay ME3 is the best in the series but it had the weakest writing, it also had Kai Leng a character that emanates "OC DO NOT STEAL" vibes

6:26 this is actually what many people get wrong about Shepard's death in the opening. He doesn't just float out into space, you can actually see him enter the atmosphere of the planet. He crashed into a planet and didn't just float around in space.

My thoughts exactly. ME2 gets all the attention because BioWare sold its soul for mainstream validation. ME2 might have had polish and special effects, but BioWare lost something that wasn’t found again while making this one.

Shepherd is in a coma for two years, not dead. He was clinically dead on the frozen planet he landed on, preserving his body and brain. They used an items to restore his vital functions. Sure, it’s sci-if, but not impossible if you have some understanding of the science.

I'll be totally honest.... ME2 is actually my least favourite from the trilogy 😬 the reason being is based on two things. 1.) The planet scanning is bloody horrendous and I hate it with every fiber of my being. 2.) The side quests you find while going around the Galaxy are quite sh*t tbh. I understand the focus went more into the recruitment & loyalty quests instead but still, it takes away from the overall experience. Least with ME3 the excuse is "well the galaxy is being invaded so there's no time for exploration". Plus ME3 is far more focused as a storyline than ME2. Not saying ME2 is a mess but it's a lot more open ended.

What really brings Mass Effect 2 down for me is all of the plot contrivances and its nonsensical story. They killed off Shepard arbitrarily and then immediately brought him back to life with unspecified space magic. That was such a cheap ploy to waste 2 years in the story. It's even worse considering that Shepard's death is teased at the end of ME1. The entire plot of ME2 is a huge downgrade in scope and stakes compared to ME1 and ME3. Don't even get me started on the mission where the crew gets kidnapped.

Yes, ive been telling ppl me2 sucks hard and it's stort has no real relevance to the overall narrative in me1 and me3. Mass effect 2 feels so out of place with forced drama by making us work wity cerberus. The collectors are irrelevant we should've been fighting cerberus in the final act if the game
@stephen4006

@@paradox_4094 I still like Mass Effect 2, but imo it completely fails as the bridge between ME1 and ME3. It’s praised for its characters, which is understandable, but it also shot the franchise in the foot by making the cast TOO large. This inevitably meant that many characters would get subpar or forced conclusions in ME3. ME2 feels more like a spin off than the bridge.
@henryviiifake8244

@@paradox_4094 100% agree about the kidnapping mission - it was like sandpaper being drawn painfully across one's privates in what was generally a solid game. What I also don't like is that in those 2yrs, *nobody* from the original crew is doing _anything_ of note to prepare their people for the Reapers (I would excuse Tali here as the Quarians are in the middle of a war with their mortal enemies in the Geth). Even Anderson, who supported your evidence in ME1 that the Reapers were coming, was as useful as a pre-used sheet of tissue paper with regards to getting things moving on earth. If you left the original Council to die, *thousands* of Alliance personnel participate in gunning down Sovereign. I found it very hard to believe that nobody of importance was involved with that and pushing for preemptive action back on Earth.
@paradox_4094
@paradox_4094 2 года назад
@@henryviiifake8244 yeah they makeout the alliance to be the ones that trust shepard but dont start massively spending on defense immediately, Anderson has the VS investigate cerberus and shepard lol, garrus does fuck all and goes to omega to shoot gangs, but the other 3 were productive. Liara saved shepard and went after intel as a broker, tali was dealing with the geth and wrex was uniting his ppl. Its all fine, but me2 shouldve been about gathering support for the readers and dealing with cerberus. The collectors just felt thrown in to give the cast something to do until me3. They couldve dealt with that faster in act 2 of me2 and had the cast deal with cerberus betrayal and fighting back after realizing we helped them in act 3. Then it couldve been explained that TIM was indoctrinated and cerberus was a problem instead of leaving TIM being indoctrinated implied because so many people that play the series dont understand that and think hes just a douche for most of me3

It actually makes sense for a renegade to choose Morinth based off a line that Samara says. That if you we do anything unjust that she will come after us after her oath to us is finished. Yea lol my renegade player definitely might think Samara might still be a threat in the future. Especially since I let Pitne For go for some cash under the table literally right before she even said that line....and that's just one thing.Just a shame they got lazy in the dialogue for her and especially for ME3. But There are some random times where she will briefly break character in gameplay when fighting enemies which is a neat touch

ME2 - though not my favorite of the series (that's ME3) - is still an absolutely fantastic game. The main plot is definitely the weakest of the series, but the characters and Suicide Mission itself are so well done that it doesn't really matter. Also, it has probably my favorite DLC in the series with Lair of the Shadow Broker, so it's still a 10/10 in my book.

ME3 is awesome. I think all 3 games have a shout as a highlight. Me1 as the introduction and that exploration and mystery it gives you. ME2 for the character studies as well as a perfect opening and the greatest last mission ever imo (suicide mission). ME3 for the massive scale of the stories and the end of big story arcs and set plays. For me they all have their pros but ME3 is also my favourite but I don't think there is a significant reason to prefer one over the other

Fun Fact: I actually boycotted Mass Effect 2 when it first came out because they gutted the RPG mechanics so hard and ruined it's identity, now all these years later I can confidently say that it's my favorite of the series simply for how intense the final mission is and how much your choices matter. I still hate how they turned the combat into generic Gears of Duty and neutered the RPG systems, but damn is it a fun ride regardless.

Mass Effect 2 is 'definitely' a masterpiece, one of my top-5 all-time favourites. The only things I don't like about it are the customisation options (lack of them to be precise), and that you need to complete missions in a certain order (crew arguments and Reaper IFF for example), to ensure the whole crew survives the suicide mission, which makes the whole experience more linear than appears on the surface once you know the order. Otherwise, it's a game that I'm obligated to play through at least once a year. In fact, no joke Dan, at the time of this comment, I'm in the middle of making my own hour-long review of Mass Effect 2 that I've been working on for over 2 months! Way to beat me to it, haha

So, I’m in camp overrated. ME2 is my introduction to the series and it is, in fact, a great game. But in relation to the other 3 games, it’s my least favorite, and yes, I am actually saying that I like Andromeda more. I think everything that ME2 does well, ME3 does better except provide a satisfactory final mission and ending. On that point, ME2 is best in class. But I think the death and resurrection of Shepard is the dumbest plot conceit in the series. Bringing Shep back to stop the Collectors made ME2, more or less, a giant sidequest. You can go from ME1 to Arrival to ME3 and really not miss much. It’s obviously better to play ME2 than not but it’s lack of focus on the Reapers or finding ways to stop them hurts it’s importance to the overall Reaper plot. I think the Paragon/Renegade system is the worst in 2 as it incentives picking one or the other and makes it more difficult for people who want to play a mixed morality play style. Gunplay and powers were more fun to me in both ME3 and MEA so while I still believe it’s an awesome game, I don’t have the same reverence for it as the community does.

In the case of Arrival, it makes sense that you don't get input from the player in regards to the asteroid. Shepard's primary goal from Mass Effect 1 has been stopping the Reapers, and whether you're Paragon or Renegade, that goal never changes. Siding with the Reapers just isn't an option. So when the choices are "Let 300,000 people die" or "Let the entire galaxy die" the obvious choice is pretty clear. Just letting the Reapers invade would be massively out of character for ANY Shepard, not matter how you played her. Shepard does have an established goal and personality, despite being a player avatar. That's why Mass Effect is so good, because Shepard isn't just a blank slate. You have to share her agency with the actual writers. And I think anyone who complained about this aspect of Arrival completely missed the point of Shepard's character.
@MrFaorry
@MrFaorry Год назад
Personally I'd say ME2 is overrated, at least when compared to the rest of the trilogy. People like to hold it up as the best of the three Mass Effect games but imo it's the worst, or rather the least good, of the trilogy. It was a huge step down from 1 in most regards moving away from many of the rpg elements in favour of being more of a corridor shooter. Levels are linear paths with no real sidetracking anymore, the skills were gutted down to the bone with many being outright removed, abilities severely nerfed encouraging all classes to play like a soldier, being locked into only 2 weapons you don't even get to choose depending on your class, the loss of planetary exploration in favour of the annoying planet scanning, and a bunch of other minor things like guns going from cool sci-fi energy weapons to generic bullet reload weapons and stuff like that. Don't get me wrong the writing of ME2 is still consistently great as with the rest of the trilogy, but as a game it just felt like a step down from 1 being far more restrictive and on the rails in many ways while 3 refined and improved upon the formula of 2.
