Looking at the clock when you were both so low on time almost gave me a heart attack. But I was saying that if this goes to a time scramble this should favor you -- nice to see you push somebody push an opponent in time trouble for a change using time to your advantage 🙂. Chess is very interesting in one way. When you try new openings and tactics it's easier to blunder, so you lose rating. But you learn and develop a wider knowledge and improve eventually, gaining back the rating and getting stronger. Reminds me of software engineering and life in general. Nice to win a game as a gift, I get those a lot at my level. One of the reasons to keep playing when behind on pieces or position. The other is to find draws and new tactics. Love watching your games, you are so good at the summaries. I keep learning new things from you. A million thanks! Best of luck!!!!!

On thought instead of playing faster, is to come up with a time management risk metric that provides an estimate on how much time you can take to calculate at this moment. This would minimize running out of time at the 40 move clock limit or blundering under high pressure because of low time. One answer is to take the 90 min allowed and divide by the 40 move constraint. This equals 2.25 minutes per move. Each time you play a move in less than 2.25 min you build up a time credit for later use. If you spent longer than 2.25 minutes than you are creating a time deficit that will force you to spend less time later. The simplest way to implement is to remember every 5 moves should take less than 11 minutes. Less than 11 minutes give a credit, and more than 11 minutes creates a deficit. This gives you a metric to let you know whether you are in a high risk of a later time problem. If you want to know how much extra time you have to calculate a move. Take the number of moves made and divide by 5 and multiple that number by 11, or memorize the following: Move 5 is 11 minutes, move 10 is 22 minutes, move 15 is 33 minutes and so on. The difference between this memorized time (for the current move) and the actual time spent is the amount of extra time available to calculate a move. You don't have to be accurate, if between move 5 and move 10 just add 1 minute for every move above 5. Of course if you are about to be mated than no need to do any time calculation as you are in survival mode.
