Great talk on the hobby and where it might be going. I actually wish for such a web site or area where people in the hobby might buy/sell/trade their secret prizes they had bred or even the run of the mill since my local is nearly devoid of mom & pop fish stores. Most of the box stores are not even stocking aquatics anymore in my area. I'm just breeding RCS to get a pure strain lighter than sakura but red all the way through kind of like a crystal red shrimp but a neo. Yes, I have four aquariums. They skipped me in that poll.

It will be interesting to see how the fish keeping hobby morphs over the coming years. I’m not one of the many who stock their tanks in hopes of breeding, conservation of endangered species and the such. Tho I do commend those folks and hope they continue their quest to do so. I’m just a crazy fish keeper with enough tanks to enjoy the mostly common varieties. It’s been a joy since learning of natural methods(thanks to you and a few select others) of keeping healthy inhabitants in my care vs in previous years of getting frustrated with limited knowledge and unhealthy systems. I have always been a nature nut, animal lover, crazy houseplant hoarder kinda person. In the houseplant world I’ve seen a huge boost to that economy also, especially during Covid. I forecast a drop in that fascination with plants in coming years. People who love their plants and are always wanting the next morph/holy grail plant will have to decide if that plant will survive under their care and home environment. I see the fish keeping hobby gaining momentum due to better knowledge as to how to simply let a more natural environment play out in our tanks. Anyway, long winded, sorry but I am passionate about my collections, animals/plants. Always want to make the best decisions/ choices for/in the best interest of the living things in our care. Thank you Alex, thanks for sharing all things relevant to our aquariums and how the natural world around us is evolving.😊☮❤🐠🦐🪴

Another factor for especially Brazil/Peru environment, pollution, ecosystem damage. From mining, farming, slash and burn, industrial and other development, humans being human, not caring about the bigger picture. One example being the Zebra pleco. Now illegal to catch or collect from the wild. So any caught accidentally or by poaching have a massive mark up on their value. Now add the ecological impacts of local dams cutting off the adult and juvenile fish from their breeding areas. With both areas as well as reduced flow. Heavy metal pollution from gold mines in the area. The wild population will be gone within the next couple of years. The Amazon once a massive river with a water flow of millions of gallons per minute in many places a series of long almost stagnant lakes due to dams and pollution. Before most pollution would be diluted and washed downstream and out to sea. Now it builds up in the spaces between dams. Much the same situation is happening in China. The massive dams used to hold water, and generate hydro electric power. The countries downstream are now receiving about 25% of what they used to. Effecting not only fish stocks. Amount of water available for agriculture, industry, and people the later for drinking, hygiene, other general uses. So any human or animal waste in the water is causing worse problems downstream. With that reduction in flow what was say ten percent pollution now is by volume is forty percent. Compound that downstream and soon that water is totally unusable and full of toxins.

13:32 idk if id say that profit margins aren't good enough for aquarium fish but id say thay that the structure of our system is such that making a living off of your own work is nearly impossible. The only way you can beat giant corps is in niche areas where size is more of a hinderance and you dont need any physical space for anything like having an electrical biz or plumbing biz where you mostly just have a van which can literally be stored anywhere and it doesn't even need to be your personal property. The way its set up for production is that you Have to make like millions of items and nake a small margin off of them and just use your volume to make the real money and in reality corps only profit what they steal/keep from the employees who made the product or conducted the service. (They make more money the less they pay you)

I've started keeping fish only 5 months ago for the first time in my life. What I don't like about this hobby is that breeders don't guarantee what they sell, other than they arrive alive. Example: I bought a trio of Sword fish. 2 females 1 male. First week the male dies, 3 weeks later a female dies. Six weeks later the other female is still doing good. Why? Of course they will say it's because of my water parameters. I've had similar things happen to other types of fish a few times. Why is this the norm? I guess if I had a bunch of money it wouldn't bother me.
@Fishtory
@Fishtory 2 месяца назад
Well if the fish are healthy when you buy them, then it means they got sick from your tank, from a fellow fish, or it had a nom-detectable illness when when you bought them. It's usually policy that when a fish are sold and shipped ...if they arrive dead then of course you get a "DOA" policy. Which usually means video or photos of the fish still sealed in the shipping bag(s) and sent within 2 to 4 hours of being delivered. This proves you didn't kill the fish. Unfortunately most shops and breeders don't refund because they know they want to buy cheap fish and sell them before they die in the imposter's tank.... and you will pay more money, sometimes double the price from Big box pet shops... but often times those types of breeders or retailers WILL replace fish within a few days or I've seen as long as 10 days.
@ranjanty
@ranjanty 2 месяца назад
@@Fishtory If 2 of the 3 fish got sick from my tank then why all the other fish didn't get sick? This was a new tank. I added the fish at the same time. None of the other fish became sick and died. That's what I don't understand. The tank ran for 6 weeks before adding them and I used a filter from another tank .

I don't like buying fish that are wild caught. I don't think it's sustainable long term. I prefer to buy from hobbyists via ebay. I live in California most of the fish I have purchased the last year or so have been from ebay. Finally, I think you didn't include what I think will be a growing trend in the hobby: GMO fish. Which I fully support. I don't just want GMO fish with neon colors. I want to see GMO fish like discus that are modified to be as hardy as tilapia. So basically all the "prima Donna" fish that ate so rate and beautiful but also high maintainable, I want scientists to GMO to be a lot hardier so that they can be raised like a goldfish, betta or guppy. Imagine if you could raise discus in non pristine water conditions at room temperature. That would greatly reduce the prices on discus down the line and make more hobbyists keep them like they now do with the much more common angel fish. Imagine a zebra piece that is as hardy as a regular piece and can grow much larger as well. GMO is the next evolution of fish keeping.
@Fishtory
@Fishtory 2 месяца назад
I think you are correct. with CRSPR tech this will happen sooner or later. S.E. Asia is already seeing the GMO trend getting more and more affordable. Unfortunately they are still moving only towards looks and don't seem to care at all about the health aspect. Hopefully this changes soon

13:11 there are over 100 fish farms in florida alone?!? Then why does it feel like most fish are from overseas? Lol these guys must do mostly african cichlids. Also how do you find out theres over 100 in Florida alone and what/who they are and especially what they breed?
@beastfr0meast93
@beastfr0meast93 2 месяца назад
Most plecos need cooler water than what you have in that area. In Europe, we have almost the same temperature in our house which is the perfect condition for them to breed. The cost is lower. Us who live in Europe do not only buy from Germany. That's only a thing on the internet/RU-vid. Your favourite RU-vid does not travel to every single place in Europe :) Always think of water temperature and you can guess which fish people produce :)

6:26 lol i think the conservation minded fish keepers are a big joke. Its just all grandstanding as far as conservation goes bc who out of all of these people are actually going to reintroduce them into the wild or even try to do anything to get their natural habitat to not be destroyed, like even signing a useless petition. Nearly nobody thats who. I would like to be able to do that but I am honest in that its very unlikely and honestly theres no point unless the environment around there changes so that they can still live there like normal. For the most oart for most people its just all about scarecity. Having something nit everyone can or something that will be gone in the future. Not actually about the species itself. Americans are good at caring about things only as far as it serves them in some way.
@Fishtory
@Fishtory 2 месяца назад
While I agree that this is often the case, there are many folks I know ( and usually professors or independently wealthy folks), who keep all killifish from some region..or only a certain river/ lake. Like the Running River rainbow project and goodied working group, there is a need for healthy lines of unpopular fish. They very frequently rely on hobbyists to source diverse genetics when they do have a chance to reintroduce. But more over, it's easier to spawn than resurrect from the dead.
