Standard clip is my latest go to clipper, well worth the 25 bucks. I’ve been using it on every mix and am sooo happy with the results. The ability to add saturation is the icing on the cake for this plugin. It turns dull mixes into a crispy , aggressive beast of a song !

Clipping also interacts with whatever’s playing along with your transient-sounds (especially with kick drums). It can provide kicks with the mid/highs they may lack to « click » through a busy session

you should also try bigclipper, v-clip and elephant on clip mode! big clipper is really good at making the transient pop, elephant is generally extremely clean but it sound less loud and punchy but is the one with less distortion and v clip is... great, so many different algorithm to choose from, amazing plugin!

Strat Cat Same. I find that MB clipping seems to work better before the master buss compressor than after it. I guess the lower the dynamic range, the more of an effect you get to neighboring frequencies. Not sure and I'm sure it depends on the quality of the plugin. I am going to have to try the last one he demoed. I'm always a fan of multiband.

crap comparing to KClip, the problem is the attack in the Glue, it is not fast enough to catch ISP and transients, that's why on the master bus you can't use it for the purpose that Dave showed.

@Samuel-ky2cq
@Samuel-ky2cq 6 лет назад
nah man, especially on the master you shouldn’t use it. it only has 2x oversampling if you enable it and that’s not enough to prevent aliasing; you’ll still get a SHIT ton of it. Look at kclip or standardclip, which have up to 64x, 128x or even 256x oversampling.

Different story with clipping a/d or d/a of high end converters, here I was successful to get transparent 2-3dB of 'shaving' stage a/d or d/a or combining them both to get better results

Regan Owen Keeping it short: With Clipping everything above 0 kinda get’s chopped off. With limiting it get’s pushed down. I prefer working with clippers for like 5 years now, but never without a multiband dynamics processor.
@ayayay9488
@ayayay9488 6 лет назад
Regan Owen HipHop/Trap songs usually need a hard kick. In my opinion you can get a way harder kick with a clipper. For something like a smooth rocksong, I’d rather use a limiter.
@AlexanderHyll
@AlexanderHyll 6 лет назад
Clipping means the digital signal reaches its limit, its all 1s. It squares the wave. Limiting means you push down the sound in an attempt to keep the sonics. Clipping if done subtly can add excitement but if overdone makes it sound really harsh and electronic. Limiting can be more transparent but may squeeze the dynamics out of the mix if overdone.
@izvarzone
@izvarzone 3 года назад
limiters have attack and release speed, whereas clippers do not.

You can clip loud transients like kick and snare just to bring rest of the track in volume. Clipping short transients is not so noticable and might even sound neat.
@chadhowat3392
@chadhowat3392 5 лет назад
RU-vid videos are so difficult to hear nuance. Basically you are just distorting the very loudest parts of the song which are so fast you barely notice them. If you clip a lot, it will sound like distortion basically.

i dont understand why i would want to destroy my mix with clipping. loudness lies in the mix not in the final compressor. though subtle overdrive is a must but for limiting i'd always chose something like the fabfilter pro-l to catch the last 0.3-2db of true peaks
@izvarzone
@izvarzone 3 года назад
distorted sound sometimes sound good, depends on your aesthetic preference ofc.
@jasoncruizer
@jasoncruizer 2 года назад
If you clip before hitting pro-l your mix will sound better, making limiters work too hard causes ugly artifacted sound, clipping/shaving before limiting makes limiters work in a more pleasant manner.
@troeteimarsch
@troeteimarsch 2 года назад
@@jasoncruizer nice to know, thx
@xanderpills
@xanderpills 2 года назад
Sometimes a limiter pushes transient information back in a non-pleasant way, especially live drums. Clipping even slightly to shave off the peaks instead of limiter retains the energy better. Obviously you quickly lose the dynamics completely, so it's a very subtle artform.

If you done a null test you would realize they all sound exactly the same (as long as you are in hard clipping mode, which you appear to be in all of them) hard clipping is hard clipping no matter what you use, they are literally just chopping off the peaks of the signal without taking "time" in to consideration (no attack and release) Maybe the oversampling is slightly different but when chopping off just a few db there really isnt any difference, just different UI's

hi Great video can I get ur e-mail I want u to analysis my mix for me
@claytonlevibrown
@claytonlevibrown 6 лет назад
you know what confuses me dave the fact that people in hi end studios would even need to use clipping as a technique at all. Why would they need to still maximize the final audio with master clipping if they have all this gear to compress and level everything in a professional way. If I make audio I'm likely to put it in Wavelab and boost the levels to my desired Lufs range and in doing so I usually have to brickwall various extremes by anywhere from 3 - 6 db. If I had more expensive gear to push the levels before mixdown why would I need to worry about master clipping?
@AKASHPMP
@AKASHPMP 6 лет назад
Clayton Brown he is not using clipping for volume, its for improving the excitement,the transients ,to make the drums 'pop' imo
@Ch405G4m1nG
@Ch405G4m1nG 6 лет назад
Notice how he was using a hip hop instrumental, it all depends on genre and the loudness war is not stopping anytime soon. A great mix engineer (and one of Dave’s friends) Mike Dean recently said that his final masters usually read -6 dB RMS but recently he has pushed it to -4 dB and higher, he does this with clipping! Clipping is an essential part o flow mixing if you want to keep up to date with this on going war.
@claytonlevibrown
@claytonlevibrown 6 лет назад
those numbers -4 and -6 rms don't mean much to me. I read the aes form on final masters the other night and they never mentioned rms once, I think that term is outdated now except for speaker measurement and hi fi audio terminology. the document was all about using k20 +35db for professional audio not k14 or k12. I'm not sure as to what you guys are talking about, clipping the audio merely reduces the dynamics of a project. I have a way to flatten the entire output volume without losing any dynamics but I'm keeping that to myself. As for clipping is essential I would have to disagree with you unless you mean adding gain "distortion." If anything theory is complete opposite in that the higher the watts the more energy you can pass through a system allowing for less distortion but he doesn't talk about all that technical mumbo jumbo. If you play guitar through a 200 watt cabinet the guitars "distortion/clipping/gain" will sound better than the same settings going through a 90 watt speaker cabinet. When he references master bus clipping I assume he means on the master as in final mixdown and not something that can be tooled for a single snare drum channel.
@mixedbydrops7781

If you consider the shift in music consumption in the past decade I think it’s safe to say that the Loudness Wars are over. As far as releases from main stream mastering engineers, they’re only in continuation of old bad habits. Everything from Apple Music to RU-vid and Radio to Television has implemented perceived loudness normaliztion by default. The only major streaming platform that hasn’t is SoundCloud and I expect that to change soon. Physical CD purchases are down, vinyl purchases are up and vinyl itself has a breaking point once a signal exceeds a certain level to where the information can’t even be pressed to the vinyl. Lossless streaming seems to be the next big move as well. Tidal already has their end covered but Spotify is secretly engaging in price testing on a lossless streaming plan to find an appropriate price point before going public. Anyone who tries to justify crushing and distorting sounds for the sake of loudness in 2018 is completely indenial. Now if it’s for the sake of effect and aesthetic that’s one thing. The new loudness normalization implementation encourages the utilization of all the dynamic range that digital audio made possible.
@claytonlevibrown
@claytonlevibrown 6 лет назад
I like what you had to say Mixed by Drops and can agree but more specifically what you said about old guys carrying old habits into a newer world that was interesting I never thought about it like that. I only cleaned lined the audio file with brickwall after the fact because I would know if someone looked at it they would think visually the file as unpolished and that's of course what you are talking about. For years how we have compared what an audio looks like and how the "pros" look instead of using our ears to compare.
