That rifle looks SUPERB Scott. Looking forward to getting my hands on it and running it through its paces this next week at the Whittington Center. Colonel Cooper would have really like this rifle!!!
Some weight savings I notice could be implemented: 1. Front sight hood removal, just a front blade. 2. Cutting most of the spare mag housing away, does the mag need that much support for storage? 3. 3 round magazines instead of 5. 4. Skeletonizing the scope mount, or using bases instead. 5. Nylon or biothane sling instead of top hide leather sling. 6. Lighter scope mounts or cutting away existing one. 7. Burris 2.75x Scout scope is .5 oz less in weight.
I can't get behind removing the Hood from the front sight, I wouldn't want to sacrifice durability. Scope mounts also, I mean you run the risk of not holding zero when you start doing that.
Awesome rifle! Id honestly just use a monstrum scope. They are stupid lightweight and a great value. Some more weight savings would be just to take the barrel down to 16.25 as 308 lends itself very well to shorter barrel lengths. I wouldnt bother skeletonizing that mag holder id just chop it down it only needs to be .5" tall to support the magazine and it could be made of zytel to save even more weight
I learn something new every day, and I love the idea of the magazine well in the stock. For some reason a long action variant popped in my head for like a .270
