Mastering Woodworking: How to Use a Wood Jointer
Woodworking enthusiasts understand the importance of precision and accuracy in creating beautiful, functional pieces. One essential tool in achieving this is the wood jointer. In this article, we'll delve into the basics of using a wood jointer, with insights from Jeff and Rob as they demonstrate on their early 1990s Oliver jointer.
Understanding the Wood:
Before diving into the intricacies of the jointer, it's crucial to comprehend the nature of wood. Jeff emphasizes the significance of reading the wood grain. Examining the direction of the grain helps in making informed decisions on how to feed the wood through the jointer effectively. This understanding is pivotal for achieving smooth, clean cuts and minimizing tear-out.
The Anatomy of the Jointer:
Jeff and Rob's Oliver jointer serves as a perfect example of a reliable woodworking tool. The jointer consists of an infeed table, an outfeed table, a cutter head with knives, and a fence. Jeff walks us through each component, explaining its role in the jointing process.
Setting Up the Jointer:
Proper setup is the key to success when using a wood jointer. Jeff demonstrates how to set the depth of cut, ensuring it is just enough to remove imperfections without compromising the integrity of the wood. Additionally, he shares tips on aligning the infeed and outfeed tables for a seamless transition of the workpiece.
Techniques for Best Results:
With the jointer ready, Jeff demonstrates the correct technique for jointing a board. He emphasizes maintaining a steady pace, applying consistent pressure, and keeping a firm grip on the workpiece. These techniques contribute to a flat surface and square edges, essential for subsequent woodworking steps.
Safety Measures:
Woodworking safety is paramount, and using a jointer is no exception. Jeff and Rob stress the importance of wearing appropriate safety gear, including eye protection and hearing protection. They also highlight the significance of keeping hands a safe distance from the cutter head and using push blocks for added control.
Conclusion:
Mastering the art of using a wood jointer opens up a world of possibilities for woodworkers. By understanding wood grain, properly setting up the jointer, and employing the right techniques, you can achieve precise and professional results. Jeff and Rob's insights provide a valuable guide for both beginners and experienced woodworkers looking to enhance their craft with this indispensable tool.

Awesome tips on jointing Jeff! I honestly dont spend a lot of time thinking about grain orientation when jointing a face and an edge seeing as there is multiple steps and sanding after the fact that clean up a lot. With that said I am probably going to now. I really like the idea of jointing the face and planing the opposite face to make edge jointing a bit easier to identify the grain. I appreciate you brotha keep pumping out the great content gentlemen!

Thanks, Sean! Yeah you can get away with a lot after the jointer but sometimes you can screw yourself down the road. I got into the habit of just feeling the board as I’m picking it up to joint it and it takes no time now.

As a relative beginner to the craft, I've never used a jointer, so this was an excellent overview. I appreciate the natural feel of your videos. It's as if we're just hanging out talking shop. Keep up the great work! 💪

I bought my first jointer on the cheap, and now wish I had spent more. It works well, but its tough to get a long board accurately jointed, and its lacking power to face joint wide hardwoods. But, I have learned how valuable it is to have a jointer, as it unlocks huge cost savings when you can mill your own lumber. Great presentation. I learned a lot.

Question: How do you pick a face if both faces have twist? Also, I would have liked to have seen the end-on profile of that pine board. It looked like a nice example of how the jointer doesn't create parallel faces, but that the out-of-parallel faces will be resolved at the planer. I know people who have panicked when they see the non-parallel faces and jointed the board down to paneling thickness. Good info, demo.
@TodaysCraftsmen
@TodaysCraftsmen 9 месяцев назад
Just have to pick the better face! If they seem the same then they’re probably close enough that it doesn’t make much difference.

Another solid video you guys. I’m a big fan of those push pads. I’ve worn out the rubber on one though. So when is the big 16” Enterprise coming to the shop?
@TodaysCraftsmen
@TodaysCraftsmen 9 месяцев назад
Thanks, Corey! This is our second set of those. They’re great but the rubber really doesn’t last long especially on rough lumber. Haha a new jointer is pretty far down that long list of new tools we want.

okay, so, you are going to have to try and flatten boards that are longer than you bed. How to you get it flat then? Thanks.
@TodaysCraftsmen
@TodaysCraftsmen 8 месяцев назад
We’ve done it! And actually do it all the time. As long as the board doesn’t have too big of a bow you can do it

What percentage of your purchased lumber is "rough cut"?
@TodaysCraftsmen
@TodaysCraftsmen 9 месяцев назад
99.9% We’ve gotten s2s on occasion if we’ve needed a lot of long boards for a specific project. In that situation we ask them to just bring it down enough to be clean or nearly clean on two faces.
@feinschmegga
@feinschmegga 9 месяцев назад
Instead of buying the longest bed most expensive jointer - cant you simply build a simple infeed table to extend the infeed side? That should eliminate all concerns with long boards
@TodaysCraftsmen
@TodaysCraftsmen 9 месяцев назад
You could try that but there’s a reason they’re made out of cast iron. As Rob said, this was the least expensive jointer with the longest beds he could find. You have to look at what’s available.
@feinschmegga
@feinschmegga 9 месяцев назад
@@TodaysCraftsmen sure there might be a slight difference in expansion between the cast iron and a wooden infeed table. But I figured "somewhat close" is still better than no support at all in terms of deflection. I guess you could make it out of metal with an adjustable top to really dial it in. Should take care of humidity related variation throughout the year
@TodaysCraftsmen
@TodaysCraftsmen 8 месяцев назад
Definitely better than no support at all; you’re 100% right there.
