I am 78 now and am still a good player, albeit from the senior tees. I rarely shoot over my age. two years ago I was -9 thru 12 but coasted to a 64. However I have been very inconsistent over the past year. I DO blame it a bit on "chasing distance". Firing that hip was great even through my mid 60's when I was still a scratch player. But flexibility and strength lessened noticeably when I hit 72-73 yr old. What you are teaching here is 100% on target. Yes, I've been squeezing the life out of the golf club. Yes, that right hip is flaring out because it's moving out at the same time my arms are moving down. Obviously if my hips are flaring out too quickly, the arms follow instead of being able to get to the hitting zone first. Some of the somewhat negative comments below are why golfers don't get better. Change is hard. It might be easier for someone like me who has been a scratch or close to it and for 15 years under it to make changes. I took some notes while viewing two of your videos and ran your swing back and forth until I could see precisely where you arms and the club head are throughout the golf swing in relation to that right knee, hip, and torso. Every thing you mentioned, I have had tucked away in my mental book of fixes. But not as a group. I'm thoroughly impressed at how simple you explain this. This is precisely why I will shank a little pitch shot occasionally and most certainly why I hit weak shots to the right when I swing harder because I'm between clubs and opt for the wedge instead of the nine iron......and I fire the hips too early. Thanks for two terrific videos that simplify getting that distance back. It's practice tee for me in the morning. I'll let you know in a week or so how I'm coming along.

Simply the best golf lesson I have ever seen. I have never heard a pro or plus handicap golfer ever tell me to drop my arms to start the downswing and let the body follow the arms. I have changed to this way of swinging and have had immediate positive results. More distance, lower ball flight and straighter. It has taken 40 years to finally get the truth, thank you Andrew.

Spot on! I was a 2 handicap and because of my timing with my irons, I have ballooned to a 12 this year. After applying your methods, in 1 day I went out and shot 1 under in a practice round. I had several shots land next to the pin, and one shot hit the pin on an approach from 125 and stopped within a foot. I have been working on it so I can apply it in my swing in a tournament this weekend. This has energized me that I am finally on the right track with my swing. I am 68 years old and been play golf since I was 8 and thought maybe i am just getting old and losing my swing. Thanks Andrew I may find some time to come to SC for a short game lesson.

Many years ago I tweaked my back and had to walk back to my car. As I walked back I relaxed a bit and decided to cautiously play two holes on the way back to the parking lot(it was late and the course had emptied out). Both holes were decent length par 4s(430-435 yds). The result? Dead straight shots, and both 2 putt pars. Why? I reduced both my tension and kept my body much more still…

Andrew you are spot on! I have been the injured golfer several times…always lower back pain. This forced me to RELAX in order to stop “firing” my hips. For a brief period last year I truly mastered the vertical drop. I was hitting my irons one club longer. Absolutely amazing! And then it went away litterally in one swing during a round of golf. Since then I’ve been on a odyssey to get the magic back. With your video here, I’m really looking forward to implementing this to get the magic back.

about 18 months ago i started taking lessons. just picked up the game. thought i would start right but seeing a pro. by lesson 2 he told me to fire the hips hard from the top of the backswing. at the time my back was very sore and i told him as much. he said the golf stroke required you to 'sacrifice the spine'. i've met other young TPI guys that insist you need to use the hips like a PGA pro. they all also say to never watch youtube videos it's the worst mistake you can make. after about a year i've finally fixed my swing and now it's essentially what you teach. plenty of body twist, but i don't even have to think about it. no 'firing the hips' bollocks. i don't know if it's the TPI or who's behind it, but these instructors are a bunch of goons, ruining more golfers than they realize. i doubt i will ever pay for a lesson again. i'm also shooting mid 40's now after a year of playing and steadily improving.

Unfortunately a lot of coaches believe there is only one way to swing which leads to a lack creativity and adaptability. As a result they require you to meet them “where they are!” I hear this story from golfers I coach EVERY WEEK!! One of the best teachers on YT. ✅ "Beware of injured player" so true. Some of my better rounds with arm or knee injury. ✅ Drives in particular can be so much more playable feeling like 50% left in pocket... probably 85% of the distance- especially on firm fw. Sometimes a similar effect occurs first 3-4 holes when go straight to the tee not warmed up-- then get in trouble on later holes when giving more gas. 😢 Body vs Arms: I do best when I feel like my back lingers at the target while pressure shifts...body not being rushed sets the tone for the arms to naturally slot & the clubhead to sling itself through. Works better for irons for me...I can appreciate Moe having a heavy driver that he could feel and was harder to manipulate. Really need to go ahead and cut an old one down to 42" and lead tape the heck out of it...then swing it with precision of a 90% sw on most holes.

Today's coaches have turned the swing into Greek & the majority of us don't speak the language. Bow your wrist, keep your wrist flat, this position, that position, turn your hips 1st, stay on top & cover the ball, yada yada blah blah. Actually allowing the club to swing is rarely heard as is grip pressure & how it can ruin the entire swing before the club starts back. Thank you for explaining it in simple terms & in English we can all understand.

I have to incorporate the concept of relaxing my grip during my swing. I tend to forget about a "relaxed grip pressure" during my pre-swing routine. It's like I'm relying on muscle memory to help me swing the golf club. I need to help me relax more starting with the grip and allow that thought to extend to my wrists, arms, shoulders, body. The problem is I've been golfing for over 45 years so change for me is difficult. With that said, Andrew, I'm going to make a strong effort to add this to my pre-shot routine. Thanks Andrew for this tip.

Andrew- You’re right again. However I have arthritis really bad in my fingers. Especially in my right hand, and I’m a right handed golfer. I play with JumboMax grips, Medium tours. My ring finger and middle finger can’t bend enough to grip the club. So I essentially overlap all 3 if I include my little finger. I even wear one of those bionic gloves on my right hand sometimes. Tape my fingers up, and found some cushioned slip on inch or so things to put on all 4 fingers. I know most golfers don’t have this problem. However I’ve always played with a midsize grip because I have long fingers. This problem is probably with us older golfers, beyond 70. So I can’t grip the club in my fingers with my right hand especially. I just do the best I can. Probably going to a non tapered grip next with JumboMax. They seem to be the only one I can find to offer any help. Maybe some of your older subscribers can benefit from my findings. I watch a lot of people trying to find help for myself and others I assist at a local range. You address the problems I see better than all of the ones I’ve watched….

This guy has spoken more sense than just about anyone I've ever listened to. And there've been a few :) Too much emphasis on using the body. Tight grips destroying wrist speed. Even Tiger said his speed is in his hands. Andrew says 75% arms and wrists, and I reckon he's right. And wrists, not really hands, is true because our hands are actually hanging onto the club. Jack said he feels like he gets to the ball before the buttons on his shirt. It's all there. Too many people say too many wrong things from watch slo mo video and breaking things down to "positions". Ahh. And people getting frustrated playing this game when they could be enjoying it so much more. Very sensible instruction.

A recent study showed that touring pros grip the club more tightly than average golfers. I’m guessing that’s because their hands are stronger than ours. I took a lesson 25 years ago from a pro who debunked your thesis that lighter is faster. He swung a club with a light grip, then as hard as he could grip it. The speed was identical. He said you can grip hard so long as the pressure/tension doesn’t extend above the elbows. I don’t actually grip hard, but try to keep it firm enough that I don’t lose hand control of the grip at the top.
@AndrewEmeryGolf
@AndrewEmeryGolf 3 месяца назад
Hi John, thank you for your comments. A lot of salient points! I’m gonna push back on that study you mentioned, I’m familiar with it. What they actually found was that overall grip pressure for pros was indeed firmer than amateurs. But that same pressure for pros in relation to overall grip strength was considerebly less than amateurs. That’s a distinction that needs to be made! I would also suggest that wrist articulation along with arms speed plays a huge role in creating club head speed. Amateurs do not have supple wrists when they swing, transferring energy and squaring the club face are very difficult without actuating the wrists. For me if pressure/tension is present in the wrists and elbow its spells trouble for most. You’re correct that gripping to light is problematic - grip ‘integrity’ is very important. That’s why I suggest 5/10 is ideal anything less is too loose for sure. Best, Coach A. 🏌️‍♂️⛳️🙏🏻

This is an interesting lesson and I find it apropos to something I have been pondering. A question I have is that around 14:30, you mention 'slam the brakes on.' And then at 15:10, you mention 'slinging' the club. These two sentences kind of encapsulate something that has bugged me for decades. (I don't truly understand what you meant.) I also don't truly 'get' what you mean by 'drop your arms.' If you mean just allow them to relax as the hips begin turning, I guess I understand that. It's kind of creating lag I suppose. I was scratch (+1) at age 50, hurt my shoulder, quit after surgery didn't work out. Trying again at age 70. Pain is sometimes an issue, still. Back to the confusion... even as a scratch golfer, I was guilty of casting. I could see it on video even in the days when we did not have high speed video but I could catch a frame now and then that showed the club being released way, way too early. But I could not, for the life of me, fix it. A foot or prior to impact and my left arm and the shaft are in line. Bad! Lag... gone. I don't know if it was the bad shoulder or other physical limitations (such as I do not have a lot of wrist bend) or just an inferior swing. I felt that it was robbing me of considerable distance. I put a helluva move on the ball but only carried driver 240 yards. My scratch peers, almost all of them hit it 20-30 yards farther than me. Anyway, I could not solve it and still haven't. I feel like I am closer to understanding the swing but from about halfway down, to impact... that part is confusing. Just an hour or so ago, I happened to watch a video of John Daly in his early days, still had short hair, wasn't fat. The camera was behind him and I wished it was perpendicular to his ball position so that I could see impact. I was able to stop the video at just about the moment of impact. I then tried to see what happened in the last foot or two prior to impact and the speed in that two foot section was so fast, it was impossible to find a good frame. The club was moving that fast. You see this same thing with virtually all tour pros. That club is whizzing through at incredible speed and it happens in about two feet! I have always thought of it being like the arms just STOP. Which might be akin to your 'slam the brakes on.' All of that, I wish I understood because I feel it would bring me to enlightenment, lol. BTW... an easier, more effortless motion is majorly appealing at my age... I have several aches and pains and hope I can get back a decent game. It won't be easy, haven't played in many years (until now). I've shot mid-80s three times out and I have a goal of shooting my age and that'll be difficult but I'll try hard, I've got time. The bottom line of my quest is that it's a bucket list item for me to solve casting. That would be a Eureka moment. (And, yes, I have had some lessons here and there during my life.) If you can shed any light on this, I'd love to hear it! Good stuff. Or point me to a link. Sorry this is long but you kind of inspired me to say all this because I think you might be onto something, lol.

Funny coming across you today……on the range I decided I wanted to hit half swings dead straight …….a good shot to have in the bag when you don’t have a perfect lie or perfect angle into the pin for laying up ……well, just using my arms and making sure I kept the line of my hands coming down and parallel to the ball , the results were amazing ……I probably hit the ball straighter than I ever have (I hit a draw) and lost just ten yards on each club. Loved seeing them go dead straight and consistent. Completely agree, using hips too early completely overrated. And keeping grip pressure low. Just easy and free although one needs to be accurate. You talked about the body/hips "spinning" but you failed to mention the small lateral movement or bump (statistically is 4-6 inches) before the hip spin which every good golfer does. If one just spins the body without the bump bad things happen. At least that is my experience. Good reminder about the arm grip tension. Thanks

Hi Glenn, we are not yet able to measure neurological intent. I think we’re maybe 10 years or so away from having ‘wearables’ that measure data that tells us exactly what a golfer is thinking that produces a corresponding physiological reaction! The shocking discovery I’ve experienced giving almost 30,000 golf lessons to a multitude of golfers isn’t that feels and reals are just different which they are! But that moving one part of our body often automatically moves another without neurological intent or additional ‘swing thoughts’. In my book, less thinking is nearly always produces better results with golf!! In response to your salient point, keeping your upper body closed while dropping the arms almost all of the time shifts the lower body out in front of the upper body! It’s nuts but true! In my experience IF you tell a recreational golfer to bump that ‘statistical 4-6 inches’ you mention. The vast majority of the time it leads to excessive early extension with the arms being left at the start line!! It’s a fascinating dilemma!! How could it possibly make sense that in fact swinging the arms recruits the body dynamically!! In my experience it does just that. Avoiding the spin in fact automatically triggers a bump without intention as the arms drop! Food for thought Glenn! Thanks for the comment. Best, Coach A. 🏌️‍♂️⛳️🙏🏻

Hi Andy, latest report from near Brighton UK! My range visit yesterday was great as I tried to put your suggestions into practice! First time in a long time, decades actually!, that I've "felt" the sweet power of an improved clubhead speed. a fluid feel to my swing, better balance and certainly a higher trajectory, even with a 4 iron. I'm still struggling though to keep my body facing away from the target as I start the transition so every now and then I have the infrequent fat or sliced shot! Guess its all about slowly learning a new routine and at 74 and recovering from a broken right ankle that is proving a wee bit difficult with the kinetics, but I am very mentally determined to get this right, first time, every time!! Of interest I have found that in a session of shots then just having 3 or 4 concurrent shots with the driver works very well - I'm assuming that as the driver is a flatter swing plain I somehow find it easier to stall my rotation. In turn that helps when I go to a iron shots straight afterwards - is that change in plain a possibility for the improvements I'm experiencing, or is it just random!? KR, John
@AndrewEmeryGolf
@AndrewEmeryGolf 3 месяца назад
Hi John! Thanks for the comment. Firstly, if you can’t carry a 5 iron 175 and hold it to a middle pin then it shouldn’t be in your bag! You need a 5 and 4 hybrid IF you’re using traditional long irons?!? (Are you?). Hybrids will absolutely change the game for you. It’s highly likely IF you are using traditional irons and not hybrids that you’re working too hard to get the ball in the air. If you’re able to hit draws with the driver then the hybrids shouldn’t be a problem at all which is why your question raises additional questions for me! Get yourself a couple of hybrids with soft regular shafts and you’ll be hitting high draws into the green from the 160-180 range all day long!! Best, Coach A. 🏌️‍♂️⛳️🙏🏻

Thank you Andrew! I can personally validate the effectiveness of everything you say as it has changed my game for the better. But how do I go from 70% swing (7 iron 140, Driver 220) to an 80-85% swing without initiating the hit impulse. I feel like I am leaving a lot on the table since more effort is not leading to more speed or distance. Any drills to ramp up the swing speed without initiating the hit impulse?
@AndrewEmeryGolf
@AndrewEmeryGolf 2 месяца назад
I would make sure you get more depth at the top with a faster swing!! Most golfers start down too early when trying to add speed! That’s when the body gets out in front of the golf club and we hit it shorter with more effort! Make sure you get a little more closed at address and get that trail hip much deeper at the top! From there you can speed up your arms in transition, maintain a functional swing sequence and a consistent path!! Hope that helps. Coach A. 🏌️‍♂️⛳️🙏🏻

How can I drop my arms without hitting the ground - I understand the pivot must take place - however it still comes ‘over’. I just don’t feel I have time to drop the arms first. Also (if I do ever get it) is it the butt that faces downwards in the ‘drop’ or the clubhead? And do you ‘drop’ it next to your body sideways or slightly in front. Sorry very confused. The lesson I had 2 weeks ago was all about moving my hips first which did nothing to help me. Thank you for your great videos, so nice to listen to. @AndrewEmeryGolf
@AndrewEmeryGolf 3 месяца назад
Hi John, low point control is a challenge for a lot of golfers. Essentially you need the arms moving forward where most golfers transition spin keeping the arms too elevated which causes the club to get released early! With that said it’s virtually impossible to compress the ball IF your club face is open! IF you tend to miss right you should address that problem first! I’m being somewhat presumptuous here but 80% of golfers slice! Attached is a video that talks about compression! I hope it helps. Now a bunch of injured golfers are going to get off the bench and go place big bets. Healthy golfers are going to injure themselves just in hopes of shooting better. 😂

Combine zero expectations with a very easy swing and you have yourself some good results!! Compare that to a guy trying too hard and over swinging. The irony is ridiculous. Best, Coach A. 🏌️‍♂️⛳️🙏🏻

the lack of tension then matching up body and hands like a whip when your playing against those young guys with the speakers on the course

Increase your arm speed, but keep your body back as you change direction - that’s the key!! Get after it! Coach A. 🏌️‍♂️⛳️🙏🏻

This is bad advice for a 1 plane swing?
@AndrewEmeryGolf
@AndrewEmeryGolf 2 месяца назад
You don’t need a one plane swing to play great golf!! Matt Wolfe loops it one way and Matt Fitzpatrick loops it another! I coach a ‘sequenced swing’ which they both have!! Find what works best for you and get after it! Best, Coach A. 🏌️‍♂️⛳️🙏🏻

I have used the Moe Norman style single plane swing for the last four years. My back no longer aches, my shots fly straight and long (235 yd. carry drives) with a 6 handicap on a 6300 yd. course. At 70 years old, retirement golf is a real pleasure.

That’s awesome!! I watched Moe in person practice many times when I was younger! He was amazing! I’m glad you found what works well for you! Best, Coach A. 🏌️‍♂️⛳️🙏🏻

On the downswing initiation: set your trail elbow somewhere between your hip and navel.

Create depth back and maintain depth in the transition. If you’re transition spinning then dropping your arms is going to be impossible! I hope this video helps you understand the role of the trail arm! ⬇️ Coach A. 🏌️‍♂️⛳️🙏🏻 ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ELcJZmvLzSw.htmlsi=EPATaH2bln_I5Ghn

Andrew, love the channel. How connected are your arms to your body ? Your swing looks very free.
