If you have a manual tire changer or are thinking of getting one and want to know more about them, here's my manual tire changer one year update with some thoughts & tips I've learned along the way.
With 30 tires and counting now, this little manual tire changer with the very popular duckhead modification attachment has been one of the most useful little shop tools I've purchased in a long time. It has paid for itself along with all the other accessories and consumables several times over never mind the time it has saved. With that said, it does take a little practice to get both proficient and efficient using it. Hopefully these tips will help you shorten your own learning curve and save you from making a few mistakes along the way.
The convenience of being able to perform your own tire services at home along with that wonderful DIY feeling of being totally self reliant is hard to overstate :) No more tire shop wheel damage, no more tire shop needless & costly upsells, no more tire substitutions all while working at your own pace and being as detailed oriented as you wish.

Thank you SO MUCH for this information. Tire shops in my area have gotten crazy expensive on mounting and balancing. Also, flat repair is also crazy expensive. I do all my own car repairs, but never tackled tires. I'm now going to order my own tires and do it myself! I'm grateful for folks like yourself who take YOUR time to share this great information. It is much appreciated!

Outstanding videos sir. I’m a DIY guy and have considered purchasing a manual tire changer and balancer for years, but I was very reluctant until now. The equipment mods and techniques you have demonstrated now have me convinced that this is a viable solution to the tire shop. I will now build my own setup and say goodbye to waiting around the tire shop for hours only to drive away and feel that disappointing wobble on a brand new tire. Excellent series.

Thanks for watching and good success with your build. You may also want to scope out if there are any good used Coats M60 / M76 bubble balancers in your area. They are much better than these new ones, but they are getting hard to find for a good price as the demand for them keeps increasing. I've been keeping my eyes open for one in my area, but in over a year, still nothing.

Good stuff, I bought one of these probably 10 years ago, its saved me a ton of money, same with the bubble balancer!

Spot on on the balancing. For me personally, it's not worth the money to buy a balancer. It would just end up being more of a headache. I'd be removing wheels to clean or rebalancing them every month. I deal with a lot of deep mud, a little deep snow, and some ice. So, I use airsoft BBs as balance beads. If I get a wheel full of mud during a recovery, when I get back to good road the BBs move around in the tire to rebalance the extra weight....

They need to pay you and give you royalties to use your add on attachments to better improve what they seemed to have a hard time coming up with.. Plus it was well worded the way you explained it for even a woman to understand and do as you explained to. *Subscribed...

I just ordered one. I plan on using Plastidip on the pry bar ends or I guess I could just wrap them in electrical tape.

Great videos. Have you ever considered using self balancing ceramic tire beads? They are pretty common these days and are available for commercial and passenger applications. I have successfully used them on my motorcycle tires.

Thanks for watching. I personally don't use/like balance beads and go over the two primary reasons why in the 5th video in the series in the Q&A part of the video (starts about 1/2 through the video): ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-pr4bwIlc69o.html

11:12 Every time without fail we get slow leaks from new tires. It happens to all three vehicles we own that have aluminum rims. The 4th car we own with steel rims never leaks though. I guess they can't gouge the steel as easy as they can the aluminum.
@Rchelicopterfun
@Rchelicopterfun 16 дней назад
Yes indeed, much softer than steel so likely either scratches or alloy corrosion on the bead sealing surface. Of course, only way to know for sure is have the tires removed to inspect the wheels.

Thanks for this video. I bought this same tire changer. I did clean up the weld at center because it damaged one of my centers on the first rim I changed tires. It seems the cone is loose on the shaft and does not center well on the shaft. Where did you find one that fits so well in the video if I may ask? I made my own duckbill mod and used it today for the first time, so cool. The bubble balance worked as is, yet it took time to find a perfect center. I may try your mod on that later.

I made mine on Tinkercad (free & easy to use 3D design software) and then 3D printed it.

@@Rchelicopterfun That is nice. The only place this tire changer is off is in its smaller 1.5 shaft, lengths of the top tube and screw assembly. I am definitely going to get the new Harbor Freight for the for the larger better fitting shaft assembly. It is on sale right now for less than $50 and you cannot buy the metal for that price. Thanks

What specifically are & where did you get the nylon or rubber plugs to top the holes made by the drop in anchors?

I 3D printed my nylon plug/screws, but you can purchase them too. Just Google search "countersunk nylon screws" All sorts come up. 🙂

Have you static balanced the boxster wheels?

Yep, when I replaced its tires last summer - all good 🙂
@Leah-hr6qc
@Leah-hr6qc Месяц назад
@@Rchelicopterfun that's good to know, I thought it might be an issue with the wider rims, what's the rear width on boxster? I've got 9j balance and I'm considering a bubble balance, I understand the difference between static and dynamic balance but I've seen some good results with the older bubble method 😊

I believe the the rears are 8.5J (they take 255/40/17 tires).

Adapters? If you are referencing the duck-head mod you can make them yourself (welding skills required) or purchase ready made. Links in description. The duck-head mod is also covered in more detail in part 2 of the series: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-wXsloeT0QhE.html
