Pearl Jam covers Bob Dylan's "Masters of War" in the midst of the Iraq War on Late Night With David Letterman in September of 2004. The song appeared on the album "Songs That Inspired Fahrenheit 9/11."
My mother used to play me and my brother the Dylan version of this in 1980 when we were ten and eight years of age, to in simple terms educate us about the military industrial complex. Well done Mam, it's because of you we now fully understand what's happening in Ukraine.
He was a stooge. Dylan is singing about the Marxists. They infiltrated both parties and now our political compass goes between Communism and Fascism, both of which are Marxist.
Eddie and the band does a wonderful job with this Dylan masterpiece. If you like this, check out the 30th Anniversary Celebration of Dylan at the garden. Eddie Vedder does a SUPERLATIVE job with this poignant Dylan song and STATEMENT.
WOW this got bye me pure love one” heart has to be light as a feather” this is quote from a book I read sometime ago this song help me recall this text
“do not sound a trumpet before you as the hypocrites do [on Letterman], that they may have glory from men. Assuredly, I say to you, they have their reward.”
Michael, didn’t War Pigs inspire you too? Thanks for the Post. I never heard the song before. The anger at the end only comes from the young. We can’t hate the killers, it makes us like them!
Very good version by Eddy Vedder - but for me it's still a little to "nice" for the topic! Check out Justin Sullavans (New Model Army) version ... you can realy feel Justins rage every second of the song!
If you can publish this in a scientific paper mr. M. Moore; My idea of my Hydrogen solution is to drill at the seafloor on old and or active volcano's as energy source to make Hydrogen in/at sea, that's why i need to go to Norway. (and also because i hate flying) Thus in Dutch this time; Mr. Michel Moore kunt u dit in een wetenschappelijk tijdschrift publiceren?
The one line that always got me in this song was “if there’s one thing I know, even Jesus would never forgive what you do.” One the most presumptive and ignorant lines ever sung. Clearly Dylan knows little of Jesus or the Torah for that matter. Vedder seems to love performing this song and it mirrors some of his statements. I wonder if he’d wander alone on the Southside of Chicago at night or Johannesburg or maybe Kabul or the slums of Rio. I think to be ignorant of man’s natural fallen state is to be a victim. The masters of war aren’t a cause, but a symptom and they are exactly the same as the man who wishes to stand over their gave until he’s sure they are dead.
when did they ever claim it as their own? it's a well know Bob Dylan song, this is the perfect song given the political climate of the time, particularly Donald Rumsfeld dying on the very day this rendition took place
It was so great that Eddy visited the troops in Iraq. Oh yeah-he didnt. An dthe mansion he sings about=he lives in it. Hey Eddy, it takes no couraghe to sing.
