Yeah, the judge blew it on that. Women's underwear by definition is panties +/- a bra. I can't see any rationale for not matching women's underwear and panties.

This is the you cant match a general with a sprcific rule. General is undewear ...specific is bra or panties. The rule is unevenly applird but that's the rule.

I thought the same thing, but then this was after Star Trek the TV series had ended and a few years before the first movie. In 1973, Captain Kirk was probably not the first thing most people would have thought of.

I agree. If it were "JOHN never wears blank," then I wouldn't match underwear and panties, because then they would be very different things with different implications. But since we're talking about Mary, panties are definitely synonymous with women's underwear and so should have been considered a match. (If the question had been about a man, I'm sure "underwear" would have matched "jockey shorts" etc.)
