19:20 I think Ellen had calmed down by this episode, because she was hilarious in this episode. Her reaction here when Gene asks "You know what brassieres are?" was priceless!
Today Ann Elder joined the ranks of celebs (only 9 so far) with at least two successful head-to-head matches, and she did it in only 3 attempts (66.7% success rate). Richard tops the list at most wins (6 out of 22 attempts, giving him a success rate of 27.3%, the lowest on this list of the 9 top-matching celebs). Betty White 5 (12 tries, 41.7%) Bert Convey 4 (12 tries, 33.3%). Brett has 3 (out 10 tries, 30%) Charles has 2 (also out of only 3 tries! - 66.7%). Others with 2 head-to-head wins: Jo Ann Pflug 2 out of 7 tries (28.6%). Jack Klugman 2 out of 5 tries (40%). Stu Gilliam 2 out of 5 tries (40%) (6 other celebs have achieved one head-to-head match.) It's interesting to note that Richard has the most total successful matches, but he's also appeared on every single episode, which no other celeb has done. However, his actual success rate ranks as the absolute lowest of these 8 celebs who've had the most head-to-head matches. *These stats include every head-to-head match from episode 1 to 96, excluding the lost/missing episodes 31, 32, 33.
Another week, another set of info... First of all it's the debut week of Joyce Bulifant, an actress and singer originally from Virginia, which explains the accent. Her past credits include appearances in Gunsmoke, Perry Mason, McHale's Navy and Dr. Kildare. She was a cast member of Tom, Dick and Mary, the remake of British sitcom Love Thy Neighbour, had a recurring role in The Mary Tyler Moore Show and was Sherwood Schwarz's original choice to play Carol Brady in The Brady Bunch, a role that eventually went to Florence Henderson. She later went on to have a great cameo in Airplane! and have a recurring role in the sitcom Weird Science. Bulifant's "Southern girl" voice and accent in my opinion were part of her charm on her Match Game appearances. While some may find it annoying, I counter that it gives her an air of innocence, even when she writes the weirdest or filthiest of answers. Her matching record is about on par with Patti Deutsch - not great but still better than Dick Martin, David Doyle and Bill Daily combined (more on the latter in a week's time). A very welcome addition to the Match Game family. Bulifant also appeared on Tattle Tales with her then-husband Edward Mallory, Chain Reaction, Pyramid and Password Plus. Bulifant clocks up 35 weeks on the CBS Match Game and a further 19 weeks in syndication (she was in the infamous "Cuckoo, Friend and Ollie" episode!) Next up, it's the first and only week of Robert Q. Lewis. The man with an odd letter in his name (added after accidentally including it live on air, and it stuck!), Lewis was a radio & TV presenter and actor. His radio show, Robert Q's Waxworks where he would play old records, set a template that would be followed by Dr. Demento to this very day. He appeared on several game shows from the 50's through to the 70's including What's My Line?, To Tell the Truth and Hollywood Squares, and even hosted a few shows, including The Name's the Same, Play Your Hunch and Get the Message. A lifelong smoker, Lewis died from emphysema in 1991 at the age of 71. We also welcome back the brilliant Morey Q. Amsterdam for his 3rd week, the beautiful and hilarious Ann Q. Elder for her 4th week, and regulars Brett Q. Somers and Richard Q. Dawson. Gene Q. Rayburn is your host and Johnny Q. Olson is your announcer. Elder and Bulifant are the two remaining panelists as of February 2018. A technical note here - Gene uses a Sony ECM-51 wand microphone for the first time in this episode. He would revert to his old handheld microphone by the middle of the week, but that wand would return soon enough. Gene was still tethered with a lapel microphone, and would continue to be so for another three weeks.
@@eyehatefarcebook11 Actually it looks like she did a lot of acting in the 80's, Flo, The Two Of Us, Harper Valley PTA, The Haircut, Charley's Aunt, The Facts of Life, American Playhouse, Weird Science, The Shinning, Diamonds, Just Shoot me, Thank Heavens, Dirty Love, Wreckage, Tooken, I hate Kids. Password Plus, E Hollywood Story, 2009 Game Show Awards and Studio 10. Gifts Of Greatness,
@@doyleharris6784 At the time. Betty White passed away on New Year's Eve 2021, a little over two weeks short of what would have been her 100th birthday.
Interesting this was the only week Robert Q. ever did on the '70s Match Game. He was still relatively young then and you would think he'd have been at least a semi-regular well into the '70s and even into the early '80s part that was syndicated (1979-'82).
@@ts.elliot5870 I can't imagine anyone other than FloHen as Mrs. Brady! David Cassidy was on "The Partridge Family" with his real-life step-mother Shirley Jones. Oh! Did he guest star as himself on "The Brady Bunch"? I vaguely recall...
Given her answer of "whole thing", I wonder if Ramona was thinking of a then-very popular commercial for Alka Seltzer in which someone with indigestion wails that they "can't believe I ate the whole thing."
It's the first time I've seen Robert Q Lewis in color myself, I'm always watching the What's My LIne and The Name's the Same reruns with him. It's so weird. I felt the same with Arlene Francis when I first started seeing her MG episodes on Buzzr.
Kathryne , You should have seen Rose Marie in the early 1930s back when she was a young girl singer known as Baby Rose Marie .her hair was black and she was an amazing singer
First Super Match, part 2: SHAKE Hoey-Lewis, round 1, question B: "No, sorry, I cut him off at the KNEE." (Bzzt!) Question A: "What price ONION BROTH?" (Bzzt!) Round 2, question B: "The whole staff, you mean? No, he wasn't that big a glutton; he settled for just the BUSBOY." (Bzzt!) Second Super Match, part 1: LAUGH Part 2: BYE Hoey-Mayo, round 1, question B: "The fellow has catholic tastes; not one of his wives is AN ARAB." (Bzzt!) Question A: "Yeah, the Paris gendarmes aren't happy when folks mess with THE STATUES IN THE LOUVRE." (Ding!)
Why do they keep trying to make a joke with the answers?? Is that REALLY what they were supposed to do?? Is the question Bruno the wolf.....???? SheepDip...UGHHHHHHHH Brett's answer??!!! 😶
I am wondering if I should give this episode a thumbs up. After all, it's the premier of Joyce Bulifant on this show. She was the most bizarre panelist on this show.
panelists stinking it up this episode, one match in 30 tries, ramona's answer of the "dwarfs tired of kissing snow white's "behind"' was the perfect answer, as was ellen's answer of "nutty nelson putting brassieres on "statues"'.
I wonder if Ramona was thinking of a then-very popular commercial for Alka Seltzer in which someone with indigestion wails that they "can't believe I ate the whole thing."
ROFL! Another fine episode! ;0) ROFL! Love ya Gene! :0) ROFL! Well maybe we can work something out.. ;0) The contestant got Gene smiling and laughing.. ;0) Love the voices Gene! ;0) Ok, the start of taking the first answer no matter if she understood it or not.. Gene thinks you blew too.. ;0) Jewish! ROFL! Elaine! ;0) Cows! ;0) boys! Canalopes! ;0) dogs! Little early on the theme music there but ok.. ;0)
@Christopher Bingham She was still on the show up to "Match Game '75" - the gay comment was made before her last appearance, and people didn't think that much of it at the time.
I am guessing it looks like she decided to start writing for tv and movies as she doesn't appear on anything after that time.. She went behind the scenes so speak.. ;0)
Everyone knows the proper double-entendre answer was "waitress".

I do wish that Brett wasn't a regular. She does get on my nerves. Still, I am glad Mclean has gone. He was terrible. But it's FANTASTIC to see Morey back. He's definitely the best celebrity on the whole show.
I know she is Not a Star, no person on earth calls there x by their full name... My husband Jack Krugman. Or when she says she is a heiress. Or the Encino motel... She ruined the show. 9:00 minutes criticizing peoples answers. Threatening to beat people up I the parking lot. No class lady.
I think she suddenly realized that "cannibal" was in the question after she'd already given her answer, and that's why she wanted Gene to read it a third time.
When I see the celebrities I have certain things about some of them that immediately come to mind. Joyce Bulifant (irritating squeaky child-like voice and the fact that 2 of her 5 marriages were to other celebrities ex husbands. Roger Perry, Jo Anne Worleys ex, and William Asher, Elizabeth Montgomerys ex.) Ann Elder , enough hair for 2 women.
I read her autobiography "My Four Hollywood Husbands." It was quite interesting. I was surprised to learn that her first husband was James MacArthur; through him she got to know Helen Hayes (his mom). In her book she did not paint a very flattering picture of Richard; she mentioned that he kept asking her out when she was on Match Game and while she really didn't want to date him, she agreed to go out to dinner with him once "to be polite." Then at the last minute he called her and said plans had changed and that it would be more convenient to have dinner at his home. She didn't want to and came up with an excuse to get out of going to his house and says he rarely spoke to her again.
