Matchbox Restoration: Ford Mustang No 8

The Lesney model of the Ford Mustang joined the Matchbox 1-75 series in 1966, It was painted white and had a red interior, silver trim, black baseplate and 10.5 x 45 black plastic wheels with chromed hubcaps, It featured steerable front wheels that were turned by moving a lever below the drivers door but it can't have been very successful as the steering idea was not carried over to any other model possibly because Lesneys 'auto steer' system was already in the pipeline.

Just wanted to say, I've been binging your videos and enjoying every minute for the relaxing and enjoyable content. I didn't realize they were all older videos and so many. but less so new ones. I hope you're doing well where ever you're at and just wanted to let you know that you still have viewers enjoying your content. I have rewatched quite a few of them too lol. Thank you so much!

I've been watching your videos for days now and they are absolutely amazing! I've seen thousands of hot wheels and match box cars at garage sales over the years and never gave them a second thought. absolutely no interest. Now I'm on the look out for them! Looks like you can get into this for under $100...at first. Thanks for posting all these extremely detailed and informative shows.

Excellent car rescue man. I love your vids. I never knew about that piece of history and evolution between hotwheels and matchbox. Even though the Superfast era lesney productions Matchbox cars are my favourite, i always just assumed the title was a rather meaningless marketing move that referenced racing/hotrodding or something! I personally really enjoy the wear and tear and "battledamage" the older cars i have on the bodywork, paint and windows as long as they roll well and don't have bent axles. It's always such a shame to see a neat car only to find out they don't roll. I don't have the required tools to for it in my current situation. But when i do have them, you've inspired me to give all the wrecked vintage cars i can find a second life.

awsome , never seen one with steerable wheels before. for such a small car it does have a ton of detail. i used to have a bunch of the pink " wildcat " mustangs, never remembered what happened to em. been looking for a long time for that ' unicorn'. every flea market that has opened cars, im searching for one. thumbs up👍

Thanks for this. I just got one of these Mustangs & the steering is locked up tight. When you said you were interested to see the steering mechanism, I literally said out loud, "Me too!!" I'm about to drill it. 💪 I was surprised to see that the post diameter is enough to accommodate a 2-56... the more you know. 😮

Great video! I have a relatively thorough matchbox "regular wheels" collection. I find the detail of the castings in "regular wheels" cars were more realistic then their successors in the "super-fast wheels" era. The axles on the regular wheels are also easy to peen down one end to remove the axles and wheels allowing for a complete restoration of the wheel rims and tires as in this mustang or wheel tire units as in most regular wheels cars. Great video and thank you for rescuing another piece of play history from forever like loss!

I remember as a kid I had a couple matchbox cars, including this Mustang, and even then I thought they were more detailed than hot wheels. Plus I loved that they had a trailer hitch built in. But my dad and my uncle always bought me hot wheels instead.

I was thinking about attempting to custom a 1/64 scale diecast......I was looking around for some videos for some tips....Came across this channel...WOW‼️....AMAZING.... I stopped my search and subscribe right away....I can't even imagine a nother channel as Professional, Helpful, Gives you confidence, knowledge and motivation to customize your own diecast.......I have one of these Cars The Paints Chipping, Windows Have Small Scratches, The Shifting Plastic pieces is on the car but the tip that sticks out under the door is missing, The Tires And Rims Don't Look To Shabby and it has The Little red Hitch On the Back.....I Never took apart any diecast vehicles......I was wondering where I can get cheap parts, wheels and tires etc.....Thanks ...Appreciate it

Another thing Matchbox did better than Mattel before being acquired (we all know modern Matchbox are sold by Mattel, thankfully they are still made more rugged than their brother line.) Is they weren't just cars, they mad Pannier Tank locomotives of the GWR, a small coach and a small red tank engine well before Mattel got a hold of Thomas and even before ERTL who produced great Hot wheels/Matchbox size Diecast models of Sudrian locos for many years, the pins on those were thin because the locos had odd size wheels but ERTL like Matchbox made them sturdy and tough enough for kids to play with and not break. Just remembered Matchbox also made a small yellow and red Diesel shunter. I know you do restorations on the cars but I would love to see you do a custom paint on the GWR Pannier Tank from Matchbox give it a proper Brunswick Green coat and lettering. You actually gave me the inspiration to do my own on it and a few of the coaches. May just need to buy a wood grain texture acrylic for them as they are based on WUT coaches of the GNR which were wooden body coaches. Oh sorry for rambling I love my Railway stuff more so than even my other hobbies probably the only member of my immediate family who know how they get water into a Steam Locomotive boiler bottom line glad I found your channel look forward to more restoration. Have you done a Nomad yet? One of my favorite station wagon designs out there.

Interesting to see other brands too, I mostly see Hot Wheels restorations, makes me wonder if i could fix all the toy cars i have from when i was a kid. late 80's and early 90's toy cars, and i seem to have a lot of Majorette, a bit of Corgi, a few newer Matchbox cars and Siku. And a lot of my cars i painted with a brush when i was a kid :P

I had one of these as a kid. The big problem was losing the tires since you could pretend you were changing the tires. I think Lesney may have used the auto-steer system on their Mercury Cougar model as well.

The big Matchbox cars were called Superkings. The ones I had with auto-steer were a Mercury Police Wagon and Lamborghini, like the one at the beginning of 'The Italian Job'-the original one. One of my favourite big Corgis was the Bond Moon Buggy from 'Diamonds are Forever' but yellow tyres, urgh!

I have two of these that I want to restore. Each has a different color white body and each has a different color chassis, one chassis is flat black the other gloss black, one body is white the other is ivory. Neither car looks to have been modified. Also one chassis says patient pending where the other has a patient number. Does it change the value of these cars if I use gloss paint instead of flat on the chassis, or paint them both the same colors?
