Manufactures contact and hire me to demo their products, in an unbiased manner, but it's not how I make my living. I love gear, trying cool products out, discovering their unique voices and tones. I also love film and dig creating a visually interesting "virtual tour" video demo with LOTS of hi-resolution pics, info and detailed video showcasing a range of tones. Hope you like the demos!

Hi Greg. I invested in one of these amps after watching your review.... Wow... this amplifier has brought something in and helped me bring something better than I have out... Play my 1999 Fender Lonestar American LoneStar with its Seymour Duncan double hum bucker and Pearl Gates single coils, my 1993 Gibson Les Paul through it without ever having to touch controls..... but when I plug my Korean-built PRS Toredo in, I'm in absolute sonic heaven!!! Thank you, mate!

Me Also, this demo made me buy a very early Avalon, we suspect it was a Prototype of some kind as it had no serial number, had some non typical features, and was UNGODLY loud, even in 15 watt mode. It was unplayable indoors so I sold it and bought a spitfire. This particular demo is my favorite on youtube, whenever my playing feels stale, I watch this and feel inspired again.

Great video. I have an amp very similar to this. It’s an Avalon 35. It’s got two channels and a beautiful reverb that’s unique to matchless. Takes pedals great too.

Did you pull the trigger yet or are you still deciding? I'm in the market myself and personally I think the Tungsten is a better sounding amp and a much better deal. However if you did go for the Matchless you would still have a superb amp.

Great review and playing.Too many reviews play clean for a few seconds then crank it up all the way ,,and sound very bad.This review showed ALL the amps colors,with playing that let you hear the small things that make a big difference,thanks!

The amp is named "New Yorker" so it's a play on the world of the New York subway system. It's a conceptual and surreal inward journey exploring the lonely musician's heart. Where he's going, or where he came from, is relevant. It's about his music always being with him on any journey.

@malcatron Thank you, when I dialed up that cleanish tone it reminded me of the clarity sound of Wicked Game. A touch more reverb was needed for sure but I was making sure to not bury the primary guitar tone. It's fun to fake the Strats trem part on a Tele! Just add some extra reverb and/or delay. That original Wicked Game intro is a stunning piece of guitar artfulness by James Wilsey, incredible player he is!

@haalkan I use Dunlop Ultex .73 picks but will change depending on the tone needed. I also often play with the back rounded corners of the pick. The Ultex are great since they're clear sounding and last a long time.

@lfrc2006 I didn't try pedals with this amp but other Matchless amps I've played take pedals really well. Many folks use pedals extensively with their Matchless amps. Check with Matchless for their recommendation on other choices.

This Avalon to me has the looks of some of the top Hat amps which have been around for a long time-Im thinking Matchless bought them out at one point but don't hold me to that they were also boutique amp's well known to jazz&blues players.
