In this video I review the Matis outdoor TV antenna. It runs about $40 on Amazon, has a built-in amplifier, and claims a 150 mile range. How well does it work?

Here in Arizona, the plastic on those antennas degrades very quickly in the sun and heat. I see a lot of them with parts missing. Plus, the internal pre-amp usually fails in less than a year.

Tyler, if you have a “ticking time bomb”, you absolutely want it to fail! 😂 Just messin’ with ya. I’d say any claim over 80 miles is using marketing deception by truthfully citing the diameter of the reception circle. Only junk antennae would rely on that trick. Love your videos and thanks for always giving good advice! ✌️

I came close to buying a antenna like this a year ago . I like the idea of the rotator that did not need a power source at the antenna . Every rotator I saw was way more expensive and involved allot more work . So to me the idea was pretty good . Now searching for the best deal on Amazon I came across Tyler and showed how these antennas performed . I was disappointed . I do have towers in opposite directions . Rotators seem to be a pain and multiple antennas . I settled for the insane gain by range experts Tyler recommended but I had to wait almost 6 months as his recommendation cleared house . It was worth the wait . Channel master recommended no antennas for my location and it did not look promising but I had a friend who was getting stations in the neighborhood so I made the purchase and got over a 100 stations . I did get a ge amplifier that I believe cleaned up some noise I was receiving with good signals . So in total I paid $125 where junk antenna I would have paid a quarter of that . Now similar antennas to my selection were more expensive so I feel I still got a deal . Have to give thanks to Tyler showing me the light and guiding me to this antenna .

I've been watching your videos and I see you're not too far away from Philadelphia. Have you had issues receiving MeTV and any of the stations that are broadcast in VHF 2. 1 through 2.8? I have an antenna direct 4V with the vhf add on. antenna and I'm only about 13 mi from the transmitter in the city and I can see the towers in the distance with nothing obscured in the line of sight. The stations including channel 6 come in pixelated and sometimes I lose signal completely. My neighbor who also has a rooftop antenna is running into the same problem. Do you have any solutions maybe an amplifier or something of that nature?
@AntennaMan
@AntennaMan Год назад
You're having issues with both channels because the ClearStream 4V doesn't have any low VHF elements needed for reliable reception of 6ABC and Me-TV. You'll need a low VHF capable antenna. Consider an antenna recommendation from me below: www.antennamanpa.com/antenna-recommendations.html

the only way i can see a reception range of 90-95 miles being semi-reliable, is IF you're on a high mountain range, trying to tune in to TV stations broadcasting from another tall mountain peak, or perhaps a situation like Denver: mountains to the west, flat as a pancake to the east... even lakes/oceans can't do much to help with reception beyond about 100 miles... otherwise, i think 60-70 miles is the most you can expect for reliable reception from full-powered stations. Glad you went to town on that waste of materials! Came for the facts, stayed for the fun! :D

Antenna Man, have you done any reviews on antenna types like the Channel Master CM-4221HD? This antenna type is very low profile and can be quite stealthy if installed without a tall mast. I've used the older version of that CM model antenna for years in the north San Diego county area with a CM preamp feeding a 100foot RG-6 coax cable to my garage that has a 4way splitter to feed the old coax in my house walls to rooms with TVs. Even though that antenna is designed for UHF and I get good signals on the local stations on UHF, I also get decent signal and SNR levels with it on the two local VHF channels in my area (8 and 10). Also it has a much wider beamwidth reception angle than other types of antennas. From my house, there are two different broadcast tower locations for the local TV stations - about 60degrees apart and I can receive them well with aiming it in the middle about due south, so no need for a rotator! I mounted the antenna using the Channel Master CM-3090 mount attached to the wood edge off the back roof of my house. My house is near the top of a hill so I have high elevation fortunately without needing a tall pole. Other houses below me are not so lucky.
@AntennaMan
@AntennaMan Год назад
That's a dedicated UHF antenna. I no longer review dedicated VHF or UHF antennas as most areas have VHF and UHF TV broadcasts. You're likely getting the two VHF channels with it because you're in a relatively strong signal area. I have reviewed several larger Channel Master antennas that you can find on my RU-vid channel below: ru-vid.com/group/PLa4W1QMIBkFHdxAhcntyCBjkZlOLCxn74
@donb7574
@donb7574 Год назад
@@AntennaMan Yeah its designed as a UHF antenna, but I believe the newer version of that model antenna may have added a small VHF element to improve its VHF reception. I had considered adding a VHF only antenna as well since in my area the two VHF stations broadcast from one location and the UHF stations all broadcast from the second location (60degrees apart) so it would be easy to point the VHF antenna one way and the UHF antenna the other way and combine them with a reverse splitter. But I get such good results with my UHF antenna with a CM preamp I didn't bother!

The range of TV broadcast signals was greatly reduced after the digital transition to "keep the signals within the market" and not spill into other markets. Now a days, it's very hard to pick up out of market TV stations. A lot of TV transmitters were also shut down in Canada over the years.

I've heard that even after Tyler's "destruct test" that with Sporadic "E" Reception, this antenna can receive signals from 500 to 1400 miles! 😀😃😊😄😆😅😂🤣 73 DE W8LV BILL

Hi Tyler, I need help finding someone who can install a rooftop antenna for me. The people I’ve used in the last 25+ years have passed away and I can no longer find people who do this kind of work. I live about 45 minutes North of Detroit. Thank you for any help you can give me, I’ve been an antenna person since the 80’s.

Tyler, first of all thanks for your info on antenna's - Second here is a live field report from Vero Beach Fl 32960 - I got the Silicone Dust Homerun - 4 channel - I Channel Master extreme 80, antenna - I ant 25 ft(5 pieces at 5 ft) weingart antenna mast that hook together - results WESH 2 69-73 Sig stren WOFL 35 69-73 Sig stren WFTV 9 81 Sig stren WKMG 6 87 Sig stren - All the high defs signals for those stations - they play on my new LG fine, 2 hi-defs channels are locked - Hi def won't play on older fire stick in living room (will update) In addition to the major broadcast stations and nexgen 3.0 I am getting about 35 or more stations from cocoa beach fl(college station) to channel 18 from clermont - I am getting the signal id of Fox 13 in Tampa but the WURH educational station in palm beach walks on it. Accoring to the gov website finding broadcast stations from Vero Beach I am 78-79 miles from the Broadcast towers for the orlando mkt - I tried to pickup the west palm mkt which is only 71 miles but did not work. Hope this helps your knowledge base and folks out there looking to cut the cords!

The UHF antennas are encased in plastic and do not make contact with the rest of the antenna. A little better than useless.

So when Tyler smashes this antenna does anyone else flashback to the scene in the movie "Office Space" when they are destroying the copy machine? I live in a small town of about 3,500 people and I was very surprised to see how many have that antenna. Must be something about "us hicks who live in the sticks".

Two things I wish TYLER would do. 1. Always use the same baseline antennas to compare for the review. 2. This might be a little bit difficult, but I would suggest bringing back some better antennas and testing them after being in the elements a year later.

I don't want to single out the strengths or weaknesses of any antenna (literally every antenna has it strengths and weaknesses) so that's why I include the results of the last two. If someone wants to compare it to other antennas, they need to watch the other videos which helps support my RU-vid channel. I will have a few "better" antennas in the future that I hope will do well in terms of views. I noticed that my reviews of larger antennas perform poorly compared to smaller, more consumer friendly antennas which is why I don't review much anymore. It probably has to do with the whole "I don't want that antenna on my roof." There's no reason for me to retest the larger antennas if I already spent hours making the video. It's not like the video would perform better if posted again. If anything, it would flop as people would see it as a repeat.

@@AntennaMan where I am we need all the antenna we can muster. 85 mile SW of DFW (Texas) rolling hills. No doubt most of your viewer base is looking for small-to-medium range antennas. That's 85% of your population. They've got checkbooks to balance just like we do.

@@dannypittman4766 I also feel like I've already reviewed all of the good large models like the Televes LR Mix. My hope is that my viewers will browse through my older videos to find them.

@@AntennaMan Lots of people are in apartments and condos and cannot mount larger antennas, too. So the more manageable size antennas have lots of appeal.

Due to the curve of the earth, the maximum effective range capability for a traditional antenna is approximately 75 miles.

Depending on the elevation, you can sometimes pick up TV stations from 80-90 miles away but they probably won't be reliable.

There is no one that's the best as it depends on the situation. That being said, you can find a general list of recommended antennas below. www.amazon.com/shop/antennaman/list/2LH365VAPDKLC?ref_=aip_sf_list_spv_ofs_mixed_d
