Todd Kenreck interviews Matthew Mercer about 'The Legend of Vox Machina' and Critical Role.
They're rowdy, they're ragtag, they're misfits turned mercenaries for hire. Vox Machina is more interested in easy money and cheap ale than actually protecting the realm. But when the kingdom is threatened by evil, this boisterous crew realizes that they are the only ones capable of restoring justice. What began as a simple payday is now the origin story behind Exandria’s newest heroes.

Matt truly is the definition of humble to a fault. He is asked about how it feels for him personally and he cannot help but point to everyone who has helped it come to fruition. It speaks volumes about his character that he never fails to do that. I just hope that in his head somewhere he acknowledges his importance in all of this. I know without EVERYONE involved it couldn't have happened but without him, NONE of it would have happened. Even just the redemption of D&D as a community and culture from being associated with the satanic panic to a culture of inclusivity and acceptance lies partially in his hands. The kindness and love he has for the game and his friends (and likewise their kindness and love) is what turned the page for D&D. There are countless others who have pushed the envelope to do it as well but none of them were in the spotlight with all eyes on them as Matt and the whole CR crew. Personally, I would never have gotten the guts to open up about my curiosity surrounding D&D and eventually joining the community of players without Critical Role. I never thought D&D was evil, I just didn't want to be associated with what others thought that of. Then suddenly, D&D was full of kind hearted souls pushing acceptance and kindness. Always kindness. It stamped something onto my heart that never faded the first time I heard "Love eachother" come out of his mouth. There was no if, and, or but attached to it. Just simply, "love eachother and be kind". Then Gilmore fell in love with Vax, and my world changed again. No one in chat was angry about it. (some people thought it wasn't necessary to the story but no one was mad about it being nonconforming. Scanlan's redemption arc and dealing with addiction. His friends being there but not pushing questions too hard when Scanlan needed to go away and work on himself for a while. Taryon learning that he needn't put on an act for people to like him. Veth learning that it's what is inside and your actions that matter. Percy learning to face his past and let go. All these things that are very real to very real people just touched me in a way that no other medium of entertainment ever has. It's wonderous. I cannot explain how much Matt, the cast, and crew of CR have helped me in my own internal struggles by showing me that is OK to feels these thing and to work through them rather than push them aside. And above all, they did these things while weaving actually interesting and entertaining stories that still grip me and make me cry to this day. *Spoiler alert* Then at the end of C1, Scanlan's decision to use that spell slot to save the world rather than do the selfish thing and save his friend sundered me. And I could see it sundered the whole cast as they slowly realized what had happened one by one at that table they'd all sat and grew their friendship at. They were crying, I was too. It wasn't because the story was sad. It was because they knew it was the end of the story and they were afraid. They were afraid to leave behind these characters that had represented their fears and emotions all this time. The didn't want to be alone. Even if only for a moment to roll that new character eventually. They wanted to stay at that table and be with eachother. I know it sounds stupid. Its just a game of D&D that a bunch of idiots thought would be a good idea to stream live. But to me and many others it was more than that. It was like a good book and a warm blanket before bedtime. It was movie night with family. It was many things but most of all it was a bunch of people with a single thing in common drawing them to work through life together and grow as people. And we were invited to join them if only in our hearts and minds. And I am grateful for such an invitation. So Matt, Marisha, Sam, Travis, Liam, Laura, Taliesin, Ashley, and even you Orion. If you read this. Thank you. Thank you so much for inviting me to join you at your table. You've made me a better person because of it.

Well said. Couldn't agree more! There is something lacking from a lot of other media out there that CR captures and enhances, it is authentic. Yes they are playing characters, and their acting abilities elevate them, but it is also a rare form of media that is live and raw and unpredictable. Yes there are narrative structures that the campaigns and characters follow, but they are literally creating the story on the spot with Matt Mercer's masterful guidance. I have so much respect for the CR crew, since it seems like to me, they are genuinely good people doing a genuinely great thing. Campaign 1 holds a special place in a lot of hearts.

How well said, as someone who’s been a nerd for over 30 years, been made fun of, been outcast, tormented, and bullied, this entire culture shift has been amazing. I’ve been playing DND for a little over 20 years, and the swing from bullies to acceptance has been fascinating. I know there are a lot of other DND shows, however Matt and the CR team have since day one spread kindness and acceptance of all walks of life. It’s humbling to know that people who thought they were too good for DND come together with the people who’ve been playing it for decades. Sadly we still have a long way to go, there are still gatekeepers to the community who think they are too good to have all these new players, and to them I tell them to eff off. I’ll accept everyone at my table (I DM), in fact I ran a new session for people who wanted to play but were too scared because they felt like they would embarrass themselves. They loved it, none had played before and they want to play again. Remember everyone, we were the people made fun of, so let’s not do that to others, spread the love and joy of the game, doesn’t matter if you’ve played for 20 years or 20 minutes, let’s all have fun together. And as always… is it Thursday yet?

Very well said. I can't even begin to describe exactly what CR is, or what it actually means. Like there really isn't a way to do it. "It's a live action role playing game!" "It's people playing D&D!" It just sounds dumb. But I have never been as moved on such a personal level by any other medium as I have by watching or listening to CR. I've been an avid reader of nearly every genre since I was a child, I've consumed countless hours of TV shows and movies, but never have I ever cared so much about fictional characters, been so inspired by them, or actually cried because of them. Campaign 1 was a roller coaster... And will always have a special place in my heart. There is so many moments you just couldn't get out of scripted shows. There are so many scenes that are have more impact then anything else out there, and I'll be 90 and think of them and still be moved. Just thinking about them brings me to tears... Take Grog's "FIX HIM!" Scanlan's (honestly, his entire arc) falling out with the party, the party finding the first Vestige... and the absolute epic final encounter and The Counterspell. "They all entered to defeat a God. Only one of them came to defeat two." Even the "Final Wish"... There is just so much that hits so much more then any other medium. I'm so glad I've been a part of it, and so happy they've inspired me to get others to try the game. I had one player that showed interest in the game that I thought wouldn't get into it, wouldn't be for them. I seriously thought they'd play 1 or 2 games and then bow out. But they instantly took to it, and couldn't wait for the next session. They ate it up and enjoyed the hell out of it. Several months later was diagnosed with cancer. The entire time they had their mini close by to give them strength (they were playing a cleric). They're recovering and can't wait to get back into the game. And they told everyone they met how great the game was and how much it meant to them. It just shows how great TTRPG are, regardless of what system you play. It's such a different experience, something when you finally get it just shows how great it is. And this person probably wouldn't have been exposed to it because I wasn't curious when they talked about CR on Whil Weaton's Tabletop series. Don't forget to love each other. Make the world a better place then you found it.

@@Thurrak Nothing at all, but a subset of the population will always find SOMETHING to criticize, which is fine. Ive read some people annoyed with some iconic fan service stuff like "I would like to rage", the fast pacing, some of the back and forth between jokes and emotional bits and the 3d cg animation on the dragon. To me thats all small potatoes, and just part of a show thats starting out and finding its legs (especially one that began its conception as just a one or 2 episode special). Just the same way there is that awkward time in the beggining of an actual dnd campaign. TLDR: Nothing really, its awesome. People just like to nitpick.

If Matt or anyone from the CR crew, or even Todd reads this. You *have* made a difference, hailing from the world of entertainment. D&D had some success, but with your talent, the situation in the market skyrocketed. People got jobs to work on things they love, in environments you urge to be healthy, inspired others to invest in this, it helped millions find an escape from routine and/or troubles, sick people forget their pain for a while, lonely people find friends/communities. Sure, the actors of CR were from the get-go talented, but still, their bond, chemistry and their humble disposition to this success and the way they present the game year after year creates its own legacy and heart-warm feelings. I hope you keep doing it, indeed until we all leave this world for another; but by then, we'll have hundreds explored.

I don't know if Matt will ever see this, Imposter syndrome, I feel effects "Nice People" more, because they typically live a subtractive life (more willing to make a sacrifice for the betterment of all involved). I have it as well working a job that most people go through years of schooling for, and I got it by merit and proving my skill. You (the metaphorical you) are in a position based on the way people perceive you. The value that they place vs the value you place on yourself is where that feeling comes from when there is a net positive or negative between them. I feel that it is almost a necessity to have a measure of imposter syndrome to maintain being humble in a position or about something. Only recently, since I have been doing this kind of job for 15 years, did I actually ask what I think I'm worth for the work that I do, and because I do good work they gave it to me. Good People, honest people, and "Real" people, are harder and harder to come by it feels, and when something comes along that showcases what I can only imagine as true friendship and real people enjoying each others company, and telling a damn good story, people will gravitate towards that, because it is rare in this digital world. You and the team at Critical Role, found a niche that was very neglected in "western society", the story time that troubadours we're instrumental in sharing, with stories of morals, flaws, quirks, love, loss, and life, this is that human interaction and engrossing story telling that the West has forgotten. Thank you All, and Long May He Reign.

I'm not going to lie, after the first three I was surprised at how short the episodes were; and was left immediately wanting to have the episodes be longer. I think too many people are getting hung up on the "D&D" part of The Legend of Vox Machina. It's not a D&D show, it's a cartoon. It just gets its story from a D&D game that was played, instead of from comics or toys or a video game or whatever. But it's 100% a completely viable bit of media in its own right.

I like inclusion when it respects the culture of different ethnicities and maintain the internal consistency of the setting. there is a reason people from different ethnical group look different, I mean, there is a reason ethnical group is a thing. when you reduce recognizing the historical and cultural history of an entire population into making your movie more colorful you are not just disrespecting those you are representing but their entire history. in Matt's world it doesn't matter because he created it, if he wants the entire world to not be homogenous then its up to him. and to his credit his world still have internal consistency, different races and sub races are more common to certain regions, it makes sense that they intermingle because teleportation and sky ships are a thing and there is a lot of commerce between each continent, and so on. I mean, there is even a city that is mostly dwarfs and elves, and there is a really good justification for them to live together. as someone that loves worldbuilding, a world that is not just wide but also deep is awesome.
