He was basically given the Spot treatment. He was treated like a joke in the comics and movie. And then the show gives him a bigger, more significant role.
I mean Spot was only treated like a joke by Spiderman fans, in the comics he was always a serious threat, and when he fought Daredevil he even got horror movie villain status.
Having a villain that's treated like a joke for so long suddenly make an unexpected comeback and gain enough confidence to fight their way to the top is my favorite.
A lot of their strength levels feel at least partially subjective, but Gideon’s biggest strength has always been his mastery over “The Glow” which amplifies his opponent’s negative traits. Normally that’s very useful in a lot of fights, introducing doubts, making them reckless and highlighting weaknesses. But in the fight against Matthew it would be a hindrance because it most likely would just enhance the overconfidence that drove him to make this challenge in the first place. At that point it just becomes a straight fight. (Also I’m pretty sure Matthew may have leveled up when he beat Scott and that’s where those Shiva Stand arms came from) We’d have to see him go against some of the others for a clearer picture of the power levels, since most of them have more traditional forms of strength.
Interesting how Matthew didn't even care about Scott being alive. His true motivation was being an actor and when he accomplished that he wanted to keep it that way and leave the past behind
tbf he admitted it himself, going and killing scott was a pointless venture, he didnt get the girl and he just killed some random innocent guy, might as well chase his dreams since he inherited gordons empire after beating his ass
I love what the show does for Matthew. He was always the most iconic Ex to me despite his lack of time to really do anything. His stage presence was all he had, but this show gave him the confidence and grace to actually accomplish shit and I love every second of it.
I get the feeling the writers knew Satya Bhabha’s performance was too good for a bottom-tier jobber and had to give Matthew the glow up of his life to compensate.
It reminds me a lot of Seto Kaiba’s voice in Yu-Gi-Oh Abridged. At any moment I’m half-expecting Matthew to suddenly shout, “Screw the rules! I have money!” 😂
Considering Patel's genuine psychic powers and "hipster demon chicks" its not a surprise that once he has the confidence boost from beating Scott hes one of the most powerful members of the League.
@@floricel_112 oh here i see you once again todd fan i agree with you if we speak about magic/psyquix powers todd is by far the most broken on that(which proves to be a full counter to physical fighters and would actually might be able to outclass matthew pattel in a fight with that alone since matthew is a perfect balance of both but wont be able to exploit his physical techniques on him)
Todd is OP. He has unbound strength, durability, and energy projection via portals and barriers. Also as far as feats go, he teleported to the moon and punched a hole through it which is just insane lmao@@MouthlessChocomint
It’s funny how the very first Evil Ex which didn’t have much development actually gets a lot of screen time and love in this show. Seriously I never really cared much for Matthew Petal and Lucas Lee until this show. And this coming from a long time fan of the OG comics and Movie
I love this alternate timeline where scott actually doesn't defeat the evil exes. Also Unpopular Opinion, Matthew And Roxy and the best evil exes, prove me wrong
yeah like don't get me wrong, the comics, movie and game aren't going anywhere. all 3 were phenomenal, but I'm just saying that anime feels like its one crappy made fan au if it was not crappy @@Grim.Doctor
I think i alsl hard agree specially with matthew god as for roxy too i am not to sure either her or lucas lee since poor guy got cucked and turned into the most cool version of himself possible being such a chad eventually on this timeline
When he first showed up I thought he was a loser (which he is), then he beat Gideon which I thought was cool And then he showed up in this awesome black and red suit, fired everyone refusing to elaborate, gave Ramona some helpful information, and didnt even really care that Scott's alive because hes already found confidence and moved on? Instantly became my favourite in that scene, he IS still a loser though, but thats the best part
i've seen the movie and i wasn't planning on watching the anime but this singlehandedly made me change my mind edit: it's been about a week and i've since seen Takes Off, Matthew is still the best character hands down. i don't care that he's not real i love him forever
I absolutely love how this series redeemed Matthew as a character, but also as an avatar of the author's own insecurities with his own identity at the time he wrote the original comic, even including new powers that tie into Bryan's own heritage (the water arm powers especially).
I guess they were just in chronological order in dating Ramona, it is just like those goofs not to realize that doesn't necessarily follow their actual strength lol
tbf, gideon doesnt actually have powers, hes just a dude with a lot of money and a lot of tech, whereas im pretty sure mathew never actually got the chance to pull out his way heavier-hitting powers before he got iced, not to mention the other members have gimmicks and get seriously nerfed if you target them (Lucas's skateboard, the twins bot, etc) whereas mathew can just summon his demon girls and extra arms without doing a thing, so really gideon was screwed from the start.
@@maribelrocha3814 i mean yeah, he IS gideon, so it makes sense, but neither scott or gideon actually have powers so them both 1v1ng and gideon killing him made sense
Don't ask me why, since he didn't had much screentime, but I already loved Matthew in the movie. So I am very happy about the treatment he got from the series!
Kinda fucked up that the whole League was founded on the idea that they could just beat up Ramona's boyfriend and she would instantly lose all agency and go with the winner. Like I know the notion was always 'there', but the fact that Matthew was so invested in the notion that it fomented his rebellion is nuts.
Dang, if you had told me before this anime came out that Matthew Patel would literally dunk on Gideon Graves in a fight, I wouldn't know what you were talking about because I only really got into Scott Pilgrim after this came out. But if I proceeded to read the comic and/or watch the movie after you altered the timeline I'd probably think that was pretty surprising.
Matthew Patel taking over the League of Evil Ex's makes me imagine that's what Sho Minamoto would do if he's eventually powerful enough to overthrow Joshua as the composer for shibuya
This reminds me of kingdom where the old general is forced to fight his old rival from his youth that defeated him every single time. He used everything he had to win then retired so his rival would never be able to reclaim victory.
Sucks that he barely does anything as a villain though. Also if this was lore accurate, Gideon would have hacked him to pieces in like 2 minutes, they did my man dirty in this anime.
I noticed the twins didn't get alot of spotlight.. Even during the fights.. No giant robot or music dragon... Nothing... I wonder if they are holding out for season 2
