About Maude: Gutsy, smart, outspoken, and liberal -- all are terms that describe Beatrice Arthur in the title role of the TV series that spun off from the popular All in the Family. Well-educated and upper-middle-class, Maude Findlay is the archetypal feminist of her generation. She lives in suburban Tuckahoe, New York, with her fourth husband, Walter (Bill Macy), their divorced daughter, Carol (Adrienne Barbeau), and grandson Phillip. The cast also includes Rue McClanahan as Maude's best friend Vivian; Walter's best friend and neighbor Dr. Arthur Harmon (Conrad Bain); and over the course of the series, three different maids (Esther Rolle, Hermione Baddeley and Marlene Warfield). Tough issues like abortion, alcoholism, women's liberation, menopause and politics are all fodder for the show's sharp wit and social commentary.

I'm sure when Maude asks, "What's it all about, Alfie?", most people under 50 don't catch the joke. "What's It All About, Alfie?" was a 1966 movie starring Michael Caine. Very funny joke here. I watch this bit over and over.

I’m in my 30s and I know what it means. Though to play devils advocate you can thank Mike Myers for that, What’s it all about Austin was a parody on the song it was showcased in the deleted scenes from Austin Powers and gold member. Coincidentally the Jude Law reboot came out a short time after.

You know the story about Stretch on All In The Family, right? He was becoming more and more popular and Carroll O'Connor was becoming really jealous, so that is why he was killed off. We were regular AITF watchers and I remember reading all about it in the newspaper TV columns.

Interesting story about James Cromwell and his connection to Norman Lear. Carol O’Connor had requested a raise in July of 1974. Lear balked, and O’Connor walked. He missed three episodes, with Archie’s disappearance explained by his going missing during a business trip. If O’Connor had indeed left the show, Lear’s plan was for Archie’s co-worker Stretch Cunningham (James Cromwell) to take over as the lead. But of course O'Conner return and Jerome "Stretch" Cunningham was killed off in Season 7 with Archie giving the Eulogy.

Yeah it blew my mind when I came across Maude/Dorothy on Judge Judy. Before I started watching it I thought it was a comedy sketch!! Since Bea was the defendant, I thought, what the hell did she do? LOL Apparently Bea was an animal lover like Betty White. I think Judge Judy was more lenient of Bea and let her talk when she was speaking about being an animal lover, more than if it was a regular person.

....this HAD to be around 1974; 'streaking', Watergate, and 'in the closet' talk (especially with G-y People not being diagnosed physiologically as 'mental' anymore) are all trying to be topical during "Maude" 's televised run....but unfortunately, we can see the quality starting to dwindle; flat jokes, the loss of Florida, and heavy-handed topical talk (with no focused direction), made viewers start to leave...Bea & Crew did their best acting, but...times, they were a- changin'......

The first season had several politically-leaning episodes but after Season 1 it went to regular comedy. I thought the "Vivian's Facelift" episode was hilarious, and the line "What's it all about, Alfie?" from Maude in this episode always makes me laugh, but I am sure most people under the age of 50 would have no idea what Maude is referring to [It's a 1966 Michael Caine movie].

@@RBS_ Oh yeah, I totally forgot they re-made that movie. I have always been a TV person, not a movie person. Do you know that the last movie I saw in a theatre was 2011's THE ARTIST, that quasi-silent movie starring that French actor, simply because I enjoy silent movies. Movies over the past 30 or 40 years have gotten too raunchy, vulgar and violent and gory for my taste. That's why I enjoy 50s-60s-70s TV no profanity and limited violence and restrained sexual material.
