The Dutch, we Dutchies (as I am one too), are often referred to as arrogant and rude; especially by English speaking nations with an English style cultural background. Yet we have a way of living where we like to put everyone on the same level (including our king) and just act normal. Being normal and yourself is a thing over here, it is a way of life.

"The Dutch have the reputation of being down to earth" is the best translation of "the Dutch are direct" or "the Dutch are rude". For me, as a dutchman, the way Max talks is very natural. Answer a question as clearly as possible without explaining other things and apologize for other things, just answer the question. One line from Max in the past reacting to a complaining opponent who lost was " Well, he should have gone faster". That way, he doesn't say I am better but if the opponent wanted to win he should go faster then me. That is down to earth.

Max had a unique childhood full of non-stop work and discipline. When you couple that with an even-tempered personality, it's a recipe for success. I think his personality also keeps him from losing his cool when he has a bad race or an accident. You have to push that out of your mind as quickly as possible, and get back to focusing. I can see Max winning for many years to come.

Agreed absolutely, his personality is quite similar to my countryman Rafael Nadal which was also raised in a extremely disciplined and hard work no-nonsense ambient, he is also a very down to earth and relaxed guy. let’s not be too quick to praise Jos. I love this analysis and you are so spot on when it comes to his personality. A lot of people like to say that he's arrogant, but he's not. He's confident, not arrogant. Love how you mention that he's even keeled, because it's exactly what he always says; that he tries to not get caught up in either the positive or the negative and remain neutral instead. To me he's always seemed very mature for his age. I remember watching an interview with him where he was 16/17 years old and I was so impressed by the level of maturity in his answers. And yeah, the reason a lot of people love him is that he's very genuine, honest and direct. This guy doesn't do bullshit. I think one of the reason he seems so mature at only 24 is because he was thrown into the adult world extremely young : Max got into F1 at the age of 17 (youngest driver ever) and since then he matured A LOT. Last year had a pretty huge impact as well I believe, he had a crazy, stressful, title fight with Lewis Hamilton (just your regular 7 times world champion lol). No room for mistake, never getting comfortable, until the very last lap of the very last race (this is not a metaphor, he won the championship at the last minute, that's what he's talking about in this interview) !! Last year was a defining moment in his personal growth. This year, he's been so confident (not arrogant) in himself, his capabilities, the car. I think last year was so intense that it gave him 20 years of experience in 1 lol. He was kind of known for his anger issues (on the radio...) but now he's so calm and collected. I wasn't into F1 when he started, I only got to know him later on. I don't know if my opinion on Max would be different if I knew him before but right now I can say I love the guy. This is the kind of person you want to see succeed. Btw Max is, since this morning, a 2-time-world champion !!! Congrats to him !!

At the end, Max didn't mean he'd take the number 1 spot (i.e. win), so it wasn't a statement of confidence. He meant he would take the number 1 on his car, which is tradition for the champion in F1. Not everyone takes the number, though, hence the interviewer asked, and he confirmed. Max generally isn't the kind of guy to say "I will win". Like you pointed out, he's much more pragmatic.

Alright. That was mighty pleasant to watch. Not just because of your honest and realistic interpretation regarding his verbal and emotional expression, but also because it gives me a chance to further detail something about the Dutch that is widely misinterpreted. We as Dutch have a certain mentality that is best described in the words we literally use to approach that ideology, and it is common use throughout our culture "Doe normaal" translates to "Act normal" these 2 words are kind of keystone to the direct mindset we as Dutch live by. Our Directness is often interpreted as rudeness, but in reality it is just down to earth honesty. There is no beating around the bush, no sweet talking, we say what we think and we are open to both negative and positive feedback without it being a bourdon but instead a contribution to speed up progress and resolve. So for those who live in a more "be careful what you say" mentality culture it can be quite a shock and I can fully relate to it. But now you know, it is (almost) never an attack or emotional conflict but rather a realistic and truthful approach to skip all bureaucracy and get straight to the point. Thanks again for your input and fair content.

Can confirm. I use the phrase 'doe normaal' (act normal) alot in this context
@revirdkcalb
@revirdkcalb Год назад
On the other had this "doe normaal mentality" could also lead to everyone trying to "act normal" and fit in, instead of being 100% themselves (so basically holding in your true self). As someone living in the Netherlands for a long time now, but not born and raised here, it's sometimes difficult for me to read "native Dutch", as you mentioned "honesty" being a Dutch thing, but I'm not to sure about that. Sometimes, it does feel as if people are literally trying to "act" normal (down to earth, to fit the standard) instead of being themselves. Not everyone, of course (especially the younger generation, I think, seems less limited to "act normal"), as for most the "doe normaal" mentality is probably a real thing.
@AadZwaan
@AadZwaan Год назад
@@revirdkcalb the act normal mentality is not as much someone altering his charachter to please others. Its just the way we are. And if there is one thing we are, its ourselves, we speak our mind, we say and act on what we think, this automatically translates to truly being yourself. Fitting in will always be a human trait, but in this context has really no application in regard with our cultures brutal honesty. We can be so hard and honest that again a lot of outsiders concider it as arrogance and rudeness. I value your opinion but in my experience it does not correlate with the *doe normaal* expression. The thing is we dutchies are quite silly,crazy,liberal,wild having those traits inbedded in our way of life requires exactly a little normal. Hence we have a additional little part that goes with " doe normaal" and that is "doe maar normaal dan doe je gek genoeg" translates " just act normal than your acting crazy enough " cheers be well and have a good day.

English is definitely the second language for most Dutch people, nowadays, if they don't grow up with another language in the house. Yes, we do learn other languages in school, too, like German and French, but most people don't use those that often afterwards. The "you will take the number 1" refers to the actual number 1 on the car that world champions are allowed to drive with instead of their personal race number (33 in max's case) and not the win next year.

"taking number 1" in racing context means that will be his car identifier. In 2021 he was car number 33 (as you can see on his cap) Only the current champion is allowed to drive with identifier 1. The previous champion didnt, he stuck with his old number instead of switching it to 1.

Started watching f1 in 2017. What’s crazy is if you watched from then on (he started in 2015 so I was a little late) you literally saw him grow up his interviews from the early days he definitely came off more immature and a little arrogant. But he was also a teenager lol so it was to be expected. It’s cool tho seeing him grow as a person.

Great video Max, basically summarized my opinion on Verstappen. Him and Vettel have become kind of role models for me in the way they are straight forward and open in how they communicate. You know where you stand with them which can only be a good thing especially with professional relationships.

Btw, Welcome to the F1 world and I hope you enjoy it :)

That's what is so much fun about these different personalities in F1, it's an international sport, therefore you also see different culture trades. Dutch people are just really straightforward and this can sometimes come across as arrogant. I would say the closest to Dutch people in Europe are probably Scandinavian cultures which are also pretty straight forward. I am from an ex Dutch colony and therefore bi-cultural and it's funny how big the differences can be between my family and dutch friends and people around me. I love Dutch people and I am probably culturally also more dutch myself than anything.... lot's of funny clashes with my family ;p. The one thing I really don't like is how curious Dutch people can be, they ask you straight forward the most personal stuff, like fo real!....that's where I am typically Caribbean ;) :p

I think Max's mindset is very fascinating and different from the rest. When drivers get the question how do you think the next race will go for them they always say there expectations but with Max you get always a very realistic answer with i don't know. Interesting also what he say is that he doesn't judge as something good or bad so he doesn't get involved in a rollercoaster of different emotions. It says it all when he plays fifa or is finding set-ups for iracing before a race when every other driver need to prepare mentally.
