You may call it rambling but to me it is like listening to my favorite professor. I want to soak it all in. Your commentary and narrative are so easy to understand. You gave me the advice to go with the G9 a couple of months ago based off my usage and this video totally confirmed every reason you gave. Wow, definitely 5 stars again. PapaSmurf thanks.

When I first bought the Griot's Garage G9 and used it I swapped my MaxShine 5" backing plate since I don't use 6" pads and got some pretty bad results. For one, it stalled badly even with no pressure and whinned constantly. So, if anyone buys the Griot's Garage G9 please buy the griot's Garage 5" backing plate as well, it's well worth it!
@PapaSmurf918Detail
@PapaSmurf918Detail 4 года назад
Its definitely worth it to swap to a 5" backplate. I'm curious though about how the maxshine backplate fit the G9? My M15Pro has a different style backplate as far as mounting. It has a bolt in the center to mount unlike the G9 has it so you spin the backplate on.
@edruiz6364
@edruiz6364 4 года назад
@@PapaSmurf918Detail That was definitely the problem. That MaxShine bolt locking system failed here. It did great on my Harbor Freight though.

@@edruiz6364 ahhh.. ok. Yeah I love my M15Pro just wish it didn't stall so easily. It's more work paying attention to the backplate an keeping it moving.
@Apophis-en9pi
@Apophis-en9pi 2 месяца назад
I know this is an old video but this is still a relevant topic: the stalling on the M15 Pro. I honestly think it comes down to the bearing that allows the backing plate to spin. On my 15 year old porter cable the backing plate spins super easily. Turn it with your finger and it just spins. My M15 Pro however has a much tighter bearing. I think thats killing it. You can kind of see the same thing if you watch closely in this video. When you're dry firing those buffers off the panel - as soon as you stop the MaxShine, the backing plate stops. When you shut off the Griots the pad keeps spinning for quite a while. Sad that a bearing is keeping the MaxShine from being a much, much better machine.
@PapaSmurf918Detail
@PapaSmurf918Detail 2 месяца назад
Absolutely a relevant topic! And thank you for watching! Yes. Free spin should be there 100% I think quality control comes into play as well, my replacement unit I still have is a beast! Since then I've moved to shinemate which is an absolute great unit... still have all my maxshine, and griots as well. Cycle through em here an there but 85% of time I grab my Shinemate ex620... when I need a shorter throw I'll grab my G9 from griots. 🤙
@Apophis-en9pi
@Apophis-en9pi 2 месяца назад
@@PapaSmurf918Detail Do you recall if your replacement M15 Pro spun any better? I'm actually about to do my first correction with the M15 Pro II. If it doesn't work out I have other buffers I can fall back on. But I'll be pretty disappointed. I'm really excited to use the M15 Pro.
@PapaSmurf918Detail
@PapaSmurf918Detail 2 месяца назад
@Apophis-en9pi yes it did. And it's a powerhouse. My only con that I don't like is that the air vent vents directly into your hand.. I hold the head with my left hand lol. But I believe that maxshine has come a long way since my video was done. I like to think the quality control is much better. 👍
@Apophis-en9pi
@Apophis-en9pi 2 месяца назад
@@PapaSmurf918Detail Did a little more research and I think they changed bearing suppliers as the bearing is now a feature listed on MaxShine's website. I'm LOVING the M15 Pro Series II, but I just found out the EX620 5/15 is literally the same price. Kind of regret not getting the ShineMate, but so far the M15 Pro has been ok. The bearing broke in quite well after about an hour of use. Really only bogs for me on sharp curves. And honestly that's the machine telling you to back off, pretty sure any long throw DA would stop rotation on the areas it's doing that for me. I might reach out to them about possibly trading up. Are they still the same company?
@PapaSmurf918Detail
@PapaSmurf918Detail 2 месяца назад
@Apophis-en9pi that's great to hear! Yeah, I believe they are the same company but ti my knowledge they just kept going through people an management that it was taking a toll as they weren't getting established... hey, my shinemate still stalls... all DA polishers do. Your right it's telling you back off and as well hey I'm stalling to save you. Forced rotation is the way to go or rotory if your worried about stalling 👍👍👍

It’s great to meet someone honest and not just saying stuff from being sponsored. So my question is, for someone getting started in this would you recommend the g6 or g9?
@PapaSmurf918Detail
@PapaSmurf918Detail 4 года назад
Thank you SO much! I appreciate that!!! So, if your just getting started out buying your firstpolisher, I'd recommend the Griots G9 ( they don't make the G6 anymore, the G9 replaced the G6 👍) or another good starter polisher for under 100 bucks is the Maxshine M8s. I love my G9 and I think it's a fantastic entry level polisher👍 for sure snag up a 5 inch backplate and swap out the 6" that comes with it. Pick up some orange foam pads and black foam pads from them to go with it. Your going to want the 5.5 inch pads to accommodate the 5" backplate. As far as compounds and polishes. You can start with the Griots complete compound/polish. Or whT I started with was the Meguiar's Ultimate Compound/Polish. Play around on the paint and have fun! Just keep the polisher moving and don't think to much about hurting paint! Foam pads ( in general ) are pretty safe. 👍🤙 any other questions feel free to ask man! Take it easy!!✊
@LanierLawnCare
@LanierLawnCare 4 года назад
PapaSmurf918 your awesome 😎 are there any other pads (brand wise) that you’d recommend over others?
@PapaSmurf918Detail
@PapaSmurf918Detail 4 года назад
Sorry I didn't see you had replied again! So as far as pads? So Lake Country Pads, buff N shine pads, and rupes pads are all fantastic brands to choose from. I recommend foam only to get your feet wet and get some time with a polisher. But, I think you will learn VERY quick. Once your comfortable then bump up to microfiber cutting/finishing pads, I love the Buff n shine urofiber 50/50 pad. Teamed up with 3d One hybrid compound and polish it works very well on softer ( Japanese) manufacturing clear coats.. the harder clears tend to need more aggressive on the cut BUT when cutting heavy you will most times micro marr the paint and leave it hazy.. that's when you swap to your foam pad. Foam pads are great for finishing down after your heavy cut to remove marring and clear up that haze👍👍

One advantage with the G9 is the cord can be easily removed and used for the G8(3") polisher so when you need to use 2 polishers just swap the cords.

Papa very nice video! Spot on about the 5” backing plate you are the first person I ever saw mention that. - I think 5.5” pads are perfect size. For smaller areas I use griot mini G8. If you haven’t tried them, check out the Lake Country HDO pads. They were made specifically for long throws. I love the dual layer for stability - only thing is pricier and is it makes it harder to clean (you can’t just squeeze them). I heard that griot was going to add the variable speed feature to the g9 but they just haven’t gotten around to it yet. Griot also gives you lifetime guarantee against defects. I’m not knocking the maxshine, it looks to be a great value like a lot of their products.

Yeah, I heard they were supposed to do that on the G9 V2.. but like you said. Haven't seen it. I have my eye on the new Boss g15 and G21 though! Maxshine isn't a bad polisher considering price! Hey papa taco!! Great video. I like both the polishers for sure. Both unique with throws. The m15 pro did a quicker job. I don’t have the eye like Fab does cuz they both looked similar in results to me. But yes, the m15 pro wobbles a little more because of the throw. Same thing threw me off at first after I used my maxshine m8s which is a really nice polisher as well which wobbles less than m15 pro 2.

I have a Shinemaster M8S and it has really worked well for me. I will be doing some buffing using mainly an AIO polish with the M8S but have been considering upgrading to the better Maxshine in the near future. I have the big Dewalt rotary polisher that I have used once with excellent results but I'm too skeptical to use it on a customers car unless it is a disaster car. I might even sell the Dewalt to fund my next polisher. I sure would love to get ahold of the Dewalt cordless buffer but it's a bit on the expensive side.

What’s up brotha. I happened to stumble upon this video and I gotta say it’s been a huge help. I was in the market for a DA Polisher and I believe I found the one (G9). I have 4 cars and I want to ceramic coat them all myself. In order to do that I have to do some paint correction. Hence, why I watched this video 😅. I'm still confused as to what type of pads to use. Some say wool pad some say foam pad. Is it like foam for compound and wool for polish? See I'm not very good at this but I'm willing to learn 🤙🏻. If you have any insight or any tips on helping me out that'd be great. Love the vid and keep up the great work man.
@PapaSmurf918Detail
@PapaSmurf918Detail 4 года назад
Glad my video was helpful man!!! Appreciate you taking the time to watch. As far as pad choice goes, it all depends what type of paint your working on, how bad the defects are, how thin the clear coat is ( although you need a paint depth gauge but if the car is older chances are it may be thinner ) there are lots of factors to consider. You always want to start least aggressive method first.. don't want to jump straight into heavy cut if not necessary. That way you preserve as much of the clear you can. Its VERY thin as is. Id start out with a polish of your choice and a polish pad. Do a few passes and check your work. If your happy with the defect removal you were able to achieve then stick to that combo👍 if not, you could either bump up to a more aggressive foam pad like a correction foam pad ( will be more dense and feel slightly more stiff ) and try that with your polish.. check your work and so on. If your still not happy then move to a compound ( which is more aggressive than the polish ) and try a few passes with that and then check your work. It's a process and you may need to do a few test sections ( always choose a different test spot that way your not mowing down clear in 1 spot 👍) before you actually find the combination your looking for. Then get the car done👍 hope that helps man. Feel free to pick my brain anytime bro. I'll be doing a livestream today the 14th if you get this in time. 2pm PST. Great way to ask questions and get quick answers across to you an my subs✊✊✊ take care man!

@PapaSmurf918Detail
@PapaSmurf918Detail 2 года назад
Thanks for subscribing! Anytime you polish you wanna make sure you wash and decontaminate the paint. If there is protection on the paint that is fresh then I usually like to use poorboys world strip down to help get the protection off the paint. After, I follow up with a decon of iron remover ( not always needed ) then I clay the vehicle using a clay towel or traditional clay. I just find the clay towel/mitt much faster. The reason is to get the paint as bare as possible. The contamination, if not removed will cause a bunch of issues in the polishing stage such as marring and your pads will be full of it and it's a never ending chase of WHY on earth can't I get results lol. As far as wax. That's totally up to you as there are MANY forms of protection. Most common are spray sealants. Silica spray sealants are easy to apply and are pretty durable. For example. Griots 3-1 ceramic wax is a great one found local at autozone. It's around 22 bucks and is a great product. 👍 Hyperclean Sliq is another one. Turtlewax ceramic spray coating another one. Just a few I named I've used with good results. Now when time to polish don't jump into a compound. You wanna start with a polish and polish pad and do some test passes. See what you get then adjust accordingly 👍. Check out my polishing 101 video I have. Not to far back in my vids 🤙🤙

How about the density of the lacquer on the car. What I mean is how many times can you do this to your car without cutting down into the paint on the body of the vehicle. Because I know when you use compound isn’t it taken off the clearcoat from the car. Any suggestions and comments on that you can fill me in on thanks. Great video I learned a lot from this morning I feel a little bit more comfortable in buying the product the G9 that is and then doing my own detailing.
@PapaSmurf918Detail
@PapaSmurf918Detail 3 года назад
So every car is different in terms of Clearcoat thickness... having a paint depth gauge is key to knowing.. I've been ok cause I tread lightly.. the test hood I honestly don't care if I burn through lol. That's what it's for. But, the goal is to start least aggressive to help preserve the clear. Cutting as little as possible to achieve your goal. Don't chase scratches that are deep. If you can feel it with your nail it's not going to polish out. It can be made better though and less noticeable in some cases. Appreciate you tuning in and if you have any other questions don't hesitate my friend!

Bill, thanks for watching! So, I absolutely love my G9. It's a GREAT entry level polisher. Just this Past weekend my replacement G9 stopped working on me. However I swapped cords with my G8 and it worked just fine. So it's not the unit itself but with the cords. I believe they have updated these cords cause the cord that came with my G8 looks slightly different than the other. So, I'd not worry about it. 🤙🤙 if you were to order a G9 now it would come with the updated cord.👍
@gpgoldb

Why would you pick the G9 if it keeps shutting off and they obviously are defective. Your review from oct 2019 showed G9s are defective. Has the issue been fixed now?
@PapaSmurf918Detail
@PapaSmurf918Detail 4 года назад
Well I thought I mentioned aside the fact of the issue they are having... I'd still pick the G9. The issue is not with the units themselves, it's with the power cord. I really hope they have pinpointed the issue thus far to be honest. I haven't had a " newer " cord just yet to put through its paces. Still a better unit though.

The big problem of many polishers that stop and only the orbit works, it happens often in the new machines and economic maarcaas, that's why the old one and wanted to porter cable 7424, never stops, nor sitting on top of the machine ajajjaja, and with only 450w of power but it has a good torque they are really powerful, the g9 does not stop at speed 6, on the other hand the griots g8 If it brakes a lot, OPPOSITE CASE IN the mark3 rupes it does not happen, for example the mini lh75 never stops with exerting a lot of pressure and it has a 12mm orbit, greetings claudio from giscardetailing argentina.

True. The DA polishers do have a safety measure and stall out. But, I'd that's the worry just go for a rotory or forced rotation style polisher.

@@PapaSmurf918Detail good advice, but I ALREADY have a dewalt 849 rotary, it is a missile, (THE ROTARY BOSCH IS ALSO BRAKING) but if a DA machine with free rotation stops we are in trouble and as a result it does not correct anything and without exerting pressure there is no lacquer correction ( even more so in hard lacquers) that's why the porter cable 7424 and Rupes do not slow down and excellent results are achieved, I also have forced rotation the makita po5000c1, greetings Giscardetailling.

Nice results! Literally just received my new M15 Pro series ll a couple hours ago. Haven’t opened it yet, but I’m more confident to get this polishing going after watching this video. I have some Lake Country 5.5 CCS orange pads coming soon. What gsm size microfiber towel do you use to buff afterwards? How do you maintain pads during polishing and clean afterwards? I have an all in one polish, Mckees 37 360, that I’m going to be using. On a side note, have you seen the Nano Skin Shock that is used with the Nano 6” pad? Any thoughts on that system? Thx.

Thanks man! You will have a blast with the Series II. If I had waited another 3 weeks I'd have the series II as well. I'm using in this video to just the Costco Kirkland brand towels JUST cause it's a test hood. Not really worried about the quality. They are fine for this application. But I prefer a low nap somewhere in the 300gsm range for wax/sealant removal as well as polish or compoundremoval. I have been using the Rag Company Minor lately and they work great! Minor is the name of the towel btw. Pad maintenance.. there are 2 options. Either using a pad brush or compressed air. I tried the pad brush thing but quickly bought an air compressor after the brush started to kind of fray my pads. Now I have a McGraw compressor I bought for less that 200 bucks that I use. I blow out my pad everytime It lifts the paint. I know some people don't have air compressors but it makes the world of difference.. after a few uses the pad becomes built up with clear clean and product the the pad becomes useless. Pad cleaning - I used to use Superclean degreaser and running water. Spray the pad, massage in until it gets foamy and rinse until nothing is left in pad then just set up to dry out. Recently I have been using 3D towel clean. It's a microfiber detergent I use to maintain my microfiber towels. I mixed 1oz into a 16oz spray bottle and simply spray into foam and work it in then rinse thoroughly and let dry. Have heard Dawn dish soap works well too.! 👍 I haven't heard of that just yet from Nano skin.. there are a lot of systems that are designed to work with there own products and pads. Just don't let them think you can't mix things up snd play around! That's where the fun is!😎 plus you might stumble on a combo that you love and it quickly becomes your favorite!!!

PapaSmurf918 great stuff, thank you. One thing I’ve heard, in regard to pad cleaning, is to stay clear of using dawn soap. I’ve only heard this, but they said it could change the chemical makeup of the compound or polish product your using. I’m going to give that pad cleaner powder from McKee’s a try, seems to be getting lots of thumbs up! Okay, just need to wait for the pads, and pad cleaner to get here and I’m ready to go for it. That and some sun, I’m up near Seattle and the rain is coming back, darn it! LOL.

@@tundrawhisperer4821 that's weird I know a few people who used dawn and they say it works just fine.. hmm.. either way they said not to use Superclean cause it leaves the pad chalky as well. Before I switched to the experiment of the 3D towel clean. I used Superclean for over a year with o issues 👍 the dedicated pad cleaners are ok. Nothing wrong with them for the weekend warriors. They can just get expensive if your using a lot of it! 😄 well soon enough the weather will be legit and you will get to have fun!!!

David, you can absolutely use a da polisher to apply liquid waxes/sealants.. make sure you are using a soft wax application pad or wax application pad👍. Keep the speed on the lower side as you are not going after defect removal.. just after even application of the wax/sealant 👍

Great video man ! Do you know what to do when you have stickers on your car ? Do you have to cover it with tape to make sure the stickers get no damage ? And the trunk emblem and badge, any precautions to take ? Thanks !

@PapaSmurf918Detail 4 года назад
Thanks man!! Ummm.. if you have stickers on the paint I'd put some tape ( I use the blue 3m tape ) over the stickers just in case. As far as emblems I've never had a problem with them.. you don't wanna go like over them purposely but you will be ok. Some are sharp and could tear your foam pads if you stay up against them to long. Hope that makes sense. I've gone over my Honda emblem before when applying a sealant.. soft pad but your not putting much pressure down. If your polishing or correcting just be mindful of badges and what not. 👍

As a beginner, I'll give a chance to a chineese DA long throw polisher 12mm, 900 watts Chechnya CH-S12 (CNC machined steel counterweight and NSK bearings). For a half of price (less than 100$usd), I can't go wrong :)! What do you think?

Out of the 2.. the maxshine M15Pro stalls much easier than the G9. I'm excited as well for the new G15 from griots!!! I've heard the chinese knockoffs ate hit or miss. @@whassap1549 its definitely possible but some tight areas may not be able to get reached. And getting a 5inch on the edge likes to stall. So its hit or miss depending on body lines and tight areas. A 3" polisher makes it MUCH easier
