Secretariat, arguably the greatest race horse ever, begins his quest to become the first Triple Crown winner in 25 years. Although he broke last out of the gate, "Big Red" came back to run the fastest Derby in history, with a winning time of 1:59 2⁄5 and last quarter mile in 23 seconds were both records for the Derby. Sham placed second on the day, and Our Native was third.
