Mayday called after ceiling collapses on firefighters 

A fire in an attic on a Hillside Avenue home sent one firefighter to the hospital after a ceiling caved in on him.
The fire, which was called in around 11 a.m. caused heavy smoke which was visible from the bottom of Central Street, but it was extinguished within 20 minutes.
As firefighters were working in the home, a bedroom ceiling of the affected half of the duplex collapsed on 2 firefighters, burying them in sheetrock and other materials, according to Deputy Fire Chief Mark Nelson. Firefighters who were inside the house when the ceiling collapsed called a mayday and rescued the 2 firefighters from beneath the rubble.
The injured firefighter was helped out by other firefighters while favoring his left side. He was put on a stretcher and taken to Milford Regional Medical Center, Nelson said.
An HVAC company, CPS Heating and Cooling of Marlborough, was working in the attic at the time of the fire, according to a worker who had no further comment.
Nelson could not confirm whether the HVAC work was connected to the fire, saying only that there was "work going on in the attic."
