I know a lot of tool fans will agree with me when I say this: this is actually a big deal considering Maynard hates showing his face when performing and hates the spotlight. I can tell that they’re really good friends because I know he wouldn’t do this for just anyone. It’s really sweet and it’s a side of him we don’t get to see.
I read somewhere that his eyes are very sensitive to flashing lights. Which is why Tools concerts are usually dark setup on stage and he’s in the background in the dark. But yea we hardly ever see him in the light performing
@@mightytaiger3000 When I saw A Perfect Circle, Maynard was front and center the entire time. He wasn’t “absent”. The stage was still quite dark though.
i love how Tori stops singing once Maynard decided to rise up his voice. she was like "man, he totally got this". you can tell by her smile she admires him.
Lol that is true I would never want him to sing me lullabies in person EVER,!!!!!! I am in love with his voice ONLY- He would probably sacrifice me to his god baphomet.
This was performed at RAINN benefit concert (RAINN being Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network). Both Tori and Maynard were abused as children. Love them both.
I saw a Tool concert, and the fans didn't seem to understand that the quieter moments help make the ambiance and the song structure, ruined The Patient, 4six and two, and other songs. Though the guy singing his heart out to the lyrics after he ripped the sweaty shirt off his body was fucking awesome. I see it both ways, excitement and passion, and also SHUT THE FUCK UP!!!
Amen Brother! Exactly what I thought when I first heard this song, these..... people... won't let me enjoy the song :( "What!? Have you ever even been to a concert?" doesn't cut it, tsk tsk tsk no regard for others, calm your mammaries.
Holy shit, I really think Tori Amos is like the female Jeff Buckley, the natural rhythm, the voice, the charm and the self awareness to always be on point. Shit
cus she was hugging the vocals , at the 1:55min mark he actually decided to put his input in the song and the crowd went crazy for him. his voice is powerful
josemz1990 "...decided to put his input in the song..." Haha! Dude, you're funny. Like you really think Maynard and Tori just winged this shit without discussing the arrangement. This is Tori's song and Maynard is merely accompanying her - that's what they both agreed to. OBVIOUSLY she's taking the bulk of the song! It's hers! And guess what? If she agreed to accompany Maynard with APC doing Three Libras or something, then HE would be taking the spotlight.
For as much as I like Chino, Fiona and Maynard would be a total eargasm! Like my male and female performer together? that shit would be epic 'till the end of days!
he wasn't use to being in front stage like that..its not his style he usually hangs out in the back cuz he feels lead vocalists are not the band but the band is the band in unison
Maynard has been one of my favorite singers since the 90s. Tori just became one of my favorite singers today. She's has such a powerful & gorgeous voice, she can sing anything and she sounds like an angel. She just seems to be exploding with life and joy. They sound beautiful together and I'd buy any album they made. That they are such good friends, I think, is a credit to them both because in many respects, they're polar opposites. And Tori is my new celebrity crush.
Maynard's "reputation" is that he is weird... that's it! He is VERY confident in himself and believes in just causes. He doesn't have to be the front and center of everything but he does demand his input into any creative venture he is part of. That is where his "reputation" has come from. He is incredibly deep.
he believes in such "just causes" that he makes his fans show papers in order to enter concerts, and now decided they can't even take the phones out of their pockets while the band isn't even on stage, and has brutes from "security" kick them out with no refund. SoOoOoOo deep.
@@mightytaiger3000 id do the same thing in that position personally. the idea being that if you are going to a show he wants you to be fully immersed and not tethered to a distraction. it is deep, it is meaningful and it has value. While I can see that if you were to view it from a personal sovereignty perspective then you would likely think that people should have the freedom to choose as it is their interaction with the artist, but that would undermine the intention of the art itself. But hey, this is just my opinion, and you know what they say about those eh
Regarding the people that are saying that "this song didn't really take advantage of Maynard as much as it could have" or "he could have" *insert anything here* don't seem to realize that Maynard's don that as a favor to his friend, Tori. It wasn't supposed to be an attempt at pleasing your expectations. It was a favor. An act of kindness.
Well you've certainly made a fool out of me. I was speaking more broadly than just this video but I guess you're right. Then again, who really gives a shit?
When Aenema came out they were very close. Maynard even compared himself to Tori. They entertained touring together but there was no getting around the clash of their fan base. Tool fans were still pretty stupid back then. Maynard ALWAYS knew and sang exactly what he was angry about with conviction and it was orgasmic live. While a high percentage of the fans were just testosterone filled angry morons who wanted to "mosh". They're right, it simply wouldn't have worked... UNFORTUNATELY :( Then again I've seen Tori a few times as well and her shrieking female fan base is pretty frightening as well...
+Ryan Ranger so u dont like tool or tori amos fans. they need more quality fans of your calibre you reckon? i would say tool fans can appreciate great artists, so even that takes more than one brain cell. also some people have good reason to be angry. maybe your life was easy so you cant relate to their struggle.
tyler perkinson Maynard was in a completely different gear back then man. He was always pushing his vocals!! Tori has been great every time I I have seen her.
Maynard is a class act. You can tell he's holding back a bit to not outshine the main performer. The only time he really goes all in around 1:55, he sounds incredible.
He seems to be surprised and totally in awe by her rhythmic choice and skills - singing while playing a totally different baseline on the piano - from 3:07 on 🥰
"We want you to find a comfortable space, one that is not only comfortable, but vulnerable. We want you to shut your eyes and go there. We'll meet you on the other side..."
Muhammad my friend It's time to tell the world We both know it was a girl Back in Bethlehem And on that fateful day When she was crucified She wore Shiseido Red And we drank tea by her side Sweet sweet Used to be so sweet to me Muhammad my friend I'm getting very scared Teach me how to love My brothers who don't know the law And what about the deal On the flying trapeze Got a peanut butter hand But honey do drop in At the Dew Drop Inn Sweet sweet Between the boys and the bees Moses I know I know you've seen the fire But you've never seen fire Until you've seen Pele blow And I've never seen light But I sure have seen gold And…
Even after twenty years I still get star struck and want to cry once I hear Maynard. I use to have this song repeat back in the day. I don’t know what I will do if I ever get a chance to meet him. Lol. Tori is so awesome
Maynard has suffered for years with stage fright, I saw Tool in concert many years ago and he stood back by the drums the whole time. That's the story I have heard anyway.
That...is not AT ALL WHATSOEVER why he does that. Good lord. It's simply to not distract so much from the rest of the band and to let the MUSIC itself be the focus.
Tori Amos and Tool are 2 of my favorite artists! This is a match made in heaven!!!! Too bad they didn't become a couple, get married, and have babies! Could you imagine what their kids would be like??
Jim has a beautiful wife and a beautiful little innocent girl, (3 years ago. Maybe more beautiful kids now). The worst thing a person in the entertainment industry could do is marry another person from the entertainment industry. I think the divorce rate is about 100%, and the kids are messed up. Why? It is an industry that exists with out reality, (they make up their own).
Cuanto respeto esbosaba Maynard..en ningun momento intento apagar la luz de tori, sabiendo que un leve grito de el, rompia toda la accion excelente de ella..unos grosos
I was old enough and I've never forgotten it. Today I'm watching it for the first time since I saw it on mtv back then and I'm all goosebumps. Glad you can enjoy it now too :)
wickedchick fo sho, She can play piano, too (two at once on “I Can’t See New York”). I’ve been a Tool fan since the EP, and a Tori fan for only about a decade. She has a clean/clear voice. Edit: the people screaming in the crowd are distracting, and rude. Idk why they couldn’t wait until the song was over.
"I call him up when I'm feeling terrible and he sings me lullabies." I had a friend like that, but instead if singing, he'd drive two hours and come over.
