So, is the Mazda 3 one of the best compact cars around?
With its sporty attractive looks and simple but effective engine options, Mazda puts up a great case for the Mazda 3 e-Skyactiv-X 2.0 to be one of their best cars. If you already love Mazdas this is a winner but for people not already on board the lack of radical change might seem disappointing, lets see what our REV tester Emmanuel thinks.

Late to the party with this review but a good one from Emmanuel, thanks. I bought a Mazda3 hatch five months ago in GT Sport trim with the latest e-Skyactiv X engine (186ps/240Nm) with manual transmission. I've owned premium German cars for decades but my circumstances changed and I wanted a modestly-powered, well equipped, sub-£30k petrol-engined hatch with good handling and refinement. For the price, this car is astonishingly accomplished. No regrets at all. And getting an average of 48.8mpg from new, or 5.79 l/km I think.

Whoa be careful what you type there. It was roughly 20km/L or 5L/100km. 5L/km is like a drag race car 😂

That real world economy is excellent for a petrol car and the car has interior quality of like a 5 series BMW, while the VW Golf 8 is no better than Skoda and disgusting touch controls.

@@jeremynewell4438 Good to hear. I bought the saloon version in GT sport trim 4 months ago. So far very happy and I've been getting up to 55mpg at the motorway speed limit.

Mazda 3 in sedan is killing majority of european brands with no sweat, be it SUVs,, hatches or other sedans. Btw as any petrolhead knows it, checking fuel consumption driving on a highway with 1000 RPM ( also dropping during the shot) on 6th gear is a no-no :/ The car is clearly asking for lower gear to sacrifice some fuel in favour of better running culture. Plus You buy a Mazda to purely enjoy the road, not to be constantly looking at each mpg (says proud owner of mint RX8 ;D ).

Very good review. I wonder what rpm are driving at 130kmh in 6th and how is the cabin sound insulation. I am thinking to switch from diesel to gasoline. My commute would be 150km daily strictly highway. Thanks for your answer and opinion. Just subscribed.

I have that model and i can confirm the sound insulation is good, the only problems i have is cabin rattles from the plastics. But the dealership has fixed many of them.

It should be 2800rpm at 130kmph. At that speed in the e skyactiv x 2.0L I am getting around 50mpg UK gallons.

@@pillred5974 Wishful thinking...Simply put, this is impossible. Even Mazda themselves claim (much) higher. To be perfectly clear - I got the same one, 180hp (2020), auto trans and am aware of the figures these cars achieve (great cars btw.).
@pillred5974
@pillred5974 2 года назад
@@luomotigre2803 You haven't got the same one, mine is a 2021 e skyactiv x 186hp manual transmission it does exactly 30 mph (49kmph) per 1000rpm in 6th gear. So 49kmph x 2800rpm = 137kmph so in fact at 130 it would only be 2750rpm.

I have to commute quite a bit on highway everyday and I am seriously considering getting this car: it looks very nice and has loads of great features. I am still hesitating betwwen the Mazda and the new Seat Leon, though. Does anyone have any advice they would like to share?
@ankbrq
@ankbrq 3 года назад
Leon is just a lazy ass, generic Vag product. It is almost same level with Mazda in every aspect objectively (except the interior quality), and offers efortless and punch turbocarged engines but subjectively very cold in character.

Mazda is sort of all that you'll need and nothing more. Their current lineup, especially the CX-30 & 3, is borderline luxury without the unnecessary tech of the Germans. Mazda focuses a lot on driving dynamics. Their cars still have a sense that they've been well engineered in terms of driver inputs ( braking, steering, gear change ) without necessarily being ultra sharp/ harsh. Interior is very well built & designed but some journalists complained about the lack of touch screen. I have a previous gen Mazda which had touch screen and I rarely ever used it since the rotor knob is very easy to use especially when you're moving. One thing to note on Mazda : they're not space efficient. Mazda is generally a bit tight in interior space compared to their rivals. This is mostly because of the long bonnet design ( unnecessary, but looks cool ) If you jump from a Mazda to a Seat you'll most likely notice a decrease in interior quality. Seat is a step below VW and is naturally lower in quality. It's still not bad, but it's adjusted to it's price ( which is most like lower than the equivalent Mazda but I haven't checked ) The car itself isn't bad. Seat is a very well packaged car and handling has been one of it's strong points ( beware of a harsher ride though, it's always a trade for good handling ) If you value tech in a car the Seat is probably the better choice because it benefits from the VW group parts bin. A considerable difference between the two is the choice of powerplants. Mazda uses a naturally aspirated motor ( = no turbo ) which is generally better in efficiency across the board, but lacks torque so you have to rev the engine more. Seat uses a turbocharged small displacement motor, which does very good fuel consumption when on low load but suffers somewhat significantly on heavy load, but they have more torque down under heavy load which a lot of people like.

I would chose Mazda 3. But depends also on prices / options you need on the car and availability (which these day can be a problem). Seat Leon is also very good.
@pillred5974
@pillred5974 3 года назад
I bought this exact car a couple of weeks ago and was also considering the Seat leon, first off the Leon is nowhere near as well made inside and that's where you spend your time plus the Leon is less fuel efficient, if you use the highway a lot you will get over 50mpg in the Mazda I do, you will not get the same consumption in the Leon plus let's be honest here the Leon is not as nice to look at well in my opinion at least most testers say it is the nicest looking hatchback if you don't carry passengers a lot it's the one you should go for.

Wow me too! I found it hard to decide whether to go for the new Leon or the Mazda3 . I originally ordered the Leon, and then changed my mind after seeing the new Mazda 3. I think it looks better inside and out.... but only just.

I got one and I seriously cant figure out how they get the fuel consumption that high in the tests. I live in the middle of a city so everytime I go somewhere I at least have a few kilometres of city driving. Going to work is also mostly city. On the Autobahn I usually go 120 to 130kph. My average fuel consumption is 5.8.

All skyactiv engines are designed for fuel economy mostly. So theyre not equiped with turbos and therefore lack the lower end torque typical for turbo charged engines which is the most important part when looking at acceleration. I think the 186 hp skyactiv x reaches its max 240 NM of torque at around 4000 rpm which is about double the rpm a regular trubo charged engine needs.
@jeremynewell4438

Correct, it isn't sporty, but it isn't trying to be. It's refined with low NVH and has good handling - better than some so-called premium cars I've owned before.
