Excellent video, thank you very much. My 2019 Mazda 3 suddenly started doing exactly this while I was accelerating on the freeway, along with the "Dynamic stability control malfunction" error message. The previous day I had just gotten the injectors cleaned at the service center, along with an oil change and tire rotation/balance. Just routine maintenance - nothing was wrong. It's back at the shop now, and I'm trying to decide whether this is just a coincidence, or whether I should suspect either incompetence or sabotage. If anyone reading this has any input, I'm happy to hear it. I'll try to remember to come back with an update later today.

@@motorcarnut Thanks for the reply. According to them, they had accidentally left a "very small" amount of the detergent used for the injector cleaning in the injectors. I'm still not clear on why it worked fine until I was halfway to work, or how that could have triggered the stability control error, but it's all better now.

Because if the car is misfiring it will set off traction control abs etc codes. Glad it’s fixed!

@@djdrocco This is very dangerous. My technician once told me that when the cleaned injectors are installed it's a good idea to turn the starter once or twice with the spark plugs out as the cleaning fluid that may left over in the injectors can shoot out under pressure and break the valve rods, leading to expensive repairs on the engine. I advise you to change your technician as these small details are important and show a lack of experience. In this way, when the spark plugs are gone and you turn the starter, the fuel explosion in the cylinder is not reproduced and the remaining liquid from the injectors is sprayed slightly (not under high pressure) and flows out through the exhaust. Then you can just put the spark plugs backs and start the engine normally - there will be no more liquid left in the injectors that may cause a damage.

Thanks for the video, i have the same problem with the SCBS Check engine light ,skid etc. Mine is a 2.2 2015 diesel manual, should i clean the EGR or is it a Injector or sensor problem? Hope it reaches out to you.

@motorcarnut I got the 3 warning lights simultaneously on dashboard, TPMS, SCBS and Check Engine Light, need to mention car loses power when I accelerate above 2k rpm. Is it the battery or a more serious problem? The mechanic canceled me till next week 🫠

@bomad7233 I don’t know what it can be without looking at the live data. Make sure battery terminals are clean and tight along with any ground wires. Try disconnecting the negative battery terminal for 5 minutes then reconnect tight.

Hi great video. I have misfire at 1200rpm 2nd gear same model. Changed plugs..checked coils..ran injector cleaner through engine..cleaned maf...cleaned throttle body...changed air filter..no codes but still misfiring. What do you think? ❤❤❤

I have this exact same problem. Same lights and car not being able to accelerate past 20 mph. I’ll try swapping out the spark plugs tomorrow. Hopefully that fixes it

It may need the coils replaced as well, car is in safe mode

@@motorcarnut it was indeed a bad coil. Swapping out the spark plugs didn’t fix the issue. Turns out coil #3 was bad. Swapped it out and the issue was fixed. For some reason the scanner wasn’t able to pick up any codes so I had to manually check every coil. Once the issue was fixed, the scanner finally read what was wrong. Any reason for that?

Sometimes it takes a few key cycles before a code is stored in the ecm but a good scan tool should be able to capture the fault before the code appears. My scan tool reads the ignition waves as well. Glad you fixed it

@@motorcarnut I haven't checked since I replaced the coils, But my issue was the exact same thing in your video.I changed the coil twice. Then I had the same issue, So I decided to replace all 4 and the same issue.sinc then I haven't checked the code again.

Well if it’s only one cylinder misfiring then it’s either fuel or compression. I would do a compression test .

Hi! I saw your video, very helpful btw. I have a similar problem and would appreciate your advice. I have a Mazda 2 Skyactiv 2016 with the check engine light on. The first fault code was a Cylinder 4 Misfire and my mechanic changed the spark plugs (although I have never felt the engine miss). After this we had the P0421 fault code, and my mechanic suggested that we should change the catalytic converter. However, another IMPORTANT thing to point out is that during this time I was noticing that the oil level was constantly increasing. I assume that this was increasing because of fuel flowing past the piston into the crank case and mixing with the engine oil. Do you think that this fault code would be fixed by changing the coils? Or do you think that the catalytic converter needs to be changed as well ? Thank you for your help 😊

Thank you! What you can do is try to switch the number 4 coil with number 1 and see if the miss jumps to 1 now or stays on 4. If it now jumps to 1 you know it’s the coil if it stays on 4 then it can be the fuel injector the spark plug or low cylinder compression. The misfire will cause the p0421 because unburned fuel is passing through the catalyst converter causing that code. As far as the oil level rising it would have to dump a lot of raw fuel to see that on the dip stick. Does your oil smell like fuel? Also can be a blown head gasket so check compression too.

@@motorcarnut I'm afraid that the catalytic converter is gone. It was rich in petrol because the oil level increases significantly and it smells like fuel. However, it's amazing that I've never felt the car missing in power when driving. What could this problem possibly be? Maybe a bad injector?

I had same problem we tried everything it didnt help but in the end i decide to replace battery with ne one and problems gone forever, because some mwkaniks didnt know this even theyvhave check the battery power they couldnt recognize the weaknes of it. And yess problem was exactly on battery: abs system error. Engine ectr and plus engine misfire had to all other problems frequently it shows on screen but in that day i changed battery all gone instantly I swear 😊

Doesn't make too much sense. If the battery was strong enough to start the car it should have been fine because once the car is running the alternator is what keeps the car running property not the battery. You can disconnect the battery with the engine running it's only to start the car.

I have the same car with the same issue, same lights, going into limp mode but no codes show up when plugged in, I noticed my negative terminal was loose so i tightened it and that cleared the code and it’s driving normal now but could that have been causing it? Or should I just change all coils?

It’s buried under the intake manifold, may be able to get to it without removing manifold.

Yes, of course the plugs can and do fail as well. Buy coils tend to be a big problem with Mazda

I have a 2010 mazda 3 . 2.0 4cy. I got A P0304 code I replaced the coil pack for 4 in spark plug for a. Code still persist. When running the engine I unplugged coilpax 1 through 4. 1 through 2 had a reaction. Although unplugging coil packs 3 and 4 while the engine is running had no effect at all. Even after changing the coil pack and spark plug in 4

It went away because the misfire was causing that code and misfire was fixed.

I like using OEM for ignition parts but you can good quality aftermarket parts like Delphi etc

@@voffchik26 I took it to the dealership and the story I got was " valve cover gasket was pinched and bad spark plugs" I had less than 100 miles on them" they reset the computer. I don't think they fixed it. I put a supercharger in recently and of course cel came back and ! Caution take it to the dealership for service.

The error code i get is P2185 for the coolant sensor, could that be the issue? My car is having the same issues

Possibly, replace the sensor reset the pcm and see if that fixes your issues

@TyTy1o make sure battery is fully charged. There’s an open or short circuit in the transmission control circuit which can be a pain to find. You need a high end scan tool and see the communication from ecm to tcm etc.

When it comes to ignition coils I only use OEM, but if you’re looking for something more affordable try Delphi brand for about $45.00

I have a cx-3 with misfire cyl#4, i put new factory plugs in and still get p0304 code, I swapped #4 coil with #1. cleared code and new code still says p0304 misfire on cyl #4. what should I try, any help thanks

Could be a couple of things. Before going further check cylinder compression to make sure the readings are similar on all 4 cylinders. Should be at least 120 psi with engine cold. Maximum between the highest and lowest shouldn’t be more than 20 psi, If that checks out ok could be fuel injector or wiring to #4 cylinder.

Just checked compression. All 4 cylinders were 120 psi. I can't get at injectors. I think the intake has to come off

Well that’s great about the compression, it’s not mechanical. Has to be fuel. When you pulled the #4 plug what color was it?

All 4 plugs were the same light brown. Plugs are a few weeks old. I was thinking direct injection motor maybe intake valves Carboned up and not seating. But compression is good

Correct, compression is good so not that, being it’s the last injector on the rail, it’s probably clogged or not working. Can also be a computer problem but you would have to check it with a noid light if you don’t have a high end scan tool to check pulse width. Noid light should flicker when cranking or running.

That will do it, don’t drive it that much especially when the engine light is blinking. It could damage the catalytic converter.

Check the wiring to both the fuel injector on number 3 as well as ignition coil wiring. Also make sure that cylinder has the proper compression and that the valve timing is not off. Those engines have to be dead on.

You mean same symptoms, could be a number of things. In his situation it was a bad fuel injector. Could be ignition, fuel or compression problem.

Had exactly the same issue replaced all the Spark plugs but it still has the same issue. The spark plugs def needed replacing all of them were spent. Does anyone else know what the issue may be.

Which cylinder is misfiring? It may be the ignition coil on the cylinder that is misfiring. Can try switching coils around to see it misfire follows or not.

Yea, both can be related. Engine has to run normal with no missing etc. in order for transmission to shift properly.
