Mazda CX-5 review: carbyr.uk/1e1nNun
Watch our latest video: bit.ly/carbuyer...
To look at, the latest Mazda CX-5 doesn’t seem like a huge leap forwards, but the improvements made over its predecessor reach a lot further than it appears. The CX-5 was always one of the sharpest SUVs to drive and the latest version is better than ever. Upgraded interior materials make for a far more upmarket feel and standard equipment is more generous than ever. Its safety credentials are respectable and reliability should impress, too. The original CX-5 was one of our favourite SUVs and that remains the case with this version.

TBH if I already owned the old CX-5, I wouldn't really bother with this one. It's a great car, and of course it's better than the old one. But there's just not enough reasons for me to switch. I'd buy one if I have nothing, but I'd wait until it gets an update assuming the Skyactiv Gen-2 comes next year if I already have the old CX-5

The old gen CX-5 does everything right, particularly in driving. The main change to this vehicle was NVH related. They did some changes that were when you look at them, as if they hired 20 obsessive compulsive engineers. They benchmarked against German vehicles costing triple the price in two aural ranges: human voice (which was to ensure you could have a conversation), and mechanical high resonance noises known to create fatigue. After two years of alterations to get sound down, it was measured to be quieter than the E-Class Mercedes on these measurements, however still not to the level they got the CX-9 (which on these two levels gets closer to vehicles costing 4 times the prices).
@irenafacelli2882
@irenafacelli2882 7 лет назад
Actually, a prominent review from 'Car and Driver' just came out that claimed the quietness of the new 2017 CX-5 while driving at 70 mph was at an incredible 65 decibels. That's right - 65 decibels. A decrease of 4 decibels from the 2016 model. There is NOTHING in this class of car (including the luxury brands) that match this. The reviewer noted the quietest vehicle of similar size was the $280,000 Bentley Bentayga. Amazing that 20 obsessive compulsive engineers were able to do this. Hats off to them!! This should be the SUV of the year just for that accomplishment alone. BUT - it also drives BETTER than anything else in its price range as well. OH - here's a link to that review from 'Car and Driver': www.caranddriver.com/reviews/2017-mazda-cx-5-in-depth-model-review-2017-mazda-cx-5-interior-review-car-and-driver-page-5

Search for the engineering presentation held in San Diego. Skip forward to sound deadening. And you'll see how difficult it was. Glad that Mazda is finally putting their engineering feats into NVH. They've done some amazing things with all things from the engines to metal forging for example.

James - there are hidden cubbies in the back - you just didn't look for them. When you open the boot, look to the left and right sides near the hatch opening and you'll see a couple of triangular carpeted pieces with handles. Lift them up and voila!!! 2 storage cubbies!!! Mazda was incredible with their designs of efficiency!! Maybe mention this in a follow up video and showcase.

@@adam145 They're getting there. The Japanese have been known for being very particular but never blow their own trumpet. When one finds out they hired a psychologist just to analyse the human interaction of everything down to the click of the new buttons, you know they're following in the initial footsteps of luxury brands. Kudos also for using real wood and real cork in their new products. (yes, that's real wood)

James you're wearing those yellow socks to irritate us now. CX5 subtly looks way better than the previous model. Clever clever rear armrest - why doesn't everyone do that?! Their infotainment is looking slightly dated now though... they could do with jazzing up the graphics slightly.

@inodesnet

They've stated that they've been fighting between two requests at the press release. Firstly, their obsessive compulsive department (not what they're called - but they're one of the few Japanese brands to hire one), dictated that there is not allowed to be a variation in fonts anywhere in the vehicle. For example, the font style and angle in the speedo, had to match the font on the clock, had to match the font on the tag on the leather seat. There wasn't to be a digital clock in site that had a normal digital time format simply because it clashed (looking at your Toyota). I hate to say it - but when you go through their list of obsessive compulsive changes, they hired a 1997 era Steve Jobs to work on their interior. Heck, they weren't allowed to have the seam of two carpets meeting to be seen. The current model has a failure list that would have been 1000's of line long under their new OCD regime. Because of thew font clash, they decided not to allow the Apple Carplay/Android Auto. But the backlash has been swift in the US, and they are caving in at year end. They will be providing a free update to all vehicles to allow owners to use either the MZD system provided, or to connect to Android Auto/Apple Carplay when it's finally been released for the vehicle.

+Laurence - Hi, I've driven a friend's Mk2 Tiguan 2.0 TDI 7-spd DSG AWD SEL full-spec with all extras, and it has a nice interior, is smooth, relaxed and quiet, especially good with the DCC set to 'comfort' over pot-holes at town speeds! But we like Mazda! In the showroom I like the New CX-5's interior, and it's a little cheaper but not as well equipped as a top-spec Tig! But we want a small car, and want to spend less money! We've ordered a CX-3 Sport Nav 150ps petrol - can't wait!

Yep, I was driving around a Polo for some time and I remember that I will be "using 5 liters of gas per 100 kilometers". Little bit of city and then open roads. Final result, 8.5/100 I was able to get to 6 but that meant literally no acceleration, zero overtaking and trying to not rev up to 3k RPMs.

Simon Vuille: My wife had two Renault Clio's prior to her VW UP. No problems whatsoever with either Clio, can't say the same about the VW. I drove a Peugeot for two years without issue: and it was subject to high speed, emergency response runs several times a day on all types of roads. A fortnight ago I part exchanged my BMW 520d for a Peugeot 3008 Allure 1.2 turbo auto and it is brilliant. My 3008 cost £12000.00 less than my BMW; but doesn't look or feel like it.

Which model do you have Illian? One of the old Ford era vehicles or one of the post Ford ones? Statistically according to the two German bodes that measure reliability, Mazda's are always in the top 4 (often top one). However you must always keen in mind that Mazda is also guilty of one other thing. They focus on power to weight ratio more than any other consumer brand. Every part has to pass a gram by gram committee which causes things like a lighter weight carpet over a higher durability carpet for example. This is more common in cars prior to this one. After Ford, the CEO bet the bank on one major change (literally - they borrow significantly more than they had) - they had to lower their fuel economy. So everything was bet one cleansheeting transmissions, chassis, engines - heck they even designed a patented new method of forging steel based on Samurai sword (they still hold world record more highest tensile steel used in automotive industry). This is why weight is so important. This vehicle is stage two - reduce noise, which will thankfully allow them to finally introduce harder wearing carpets (as long as those achieve lower decibel readings). Illian, you should read up on their post Ford story. It's impressive and even more so given that the very niche brand would have gone under had it not worked.

One thing. Mazda said a decade ago that they were not tuning for mpg testing, but for real world economy. The US Mazda2 was proof of that (most real world user numbers are better than EPA MPG estimates). I would look at user numbers before calling the Mazda less efficient.

Mazda is more "divisive" than VW or Audi, that's for sure. But to get a Q2 with that spec, you have to go well over 40.000€ (and that's without the digital dash etc). I find it sad that they haven't updated the infotainment to be CarPlay/Android compatible, so that we could use the navigation fro the phone, typically more reliable and up-to-date than in-car systems (unless they have a Sim card like BMW -- add more funds...). It looks very nice, and it's probably more dynamically satisfying than a Qashqai, but the modularity in the boot is a missed opportunity -- and they don't show THE single characteristic that makes or break a hatchback, the rear shelf: I stil have to see a clever one (except the old Renault Laguna, or the new Civic). THe last thing is residuals. I bet it costs less to PCP a BMW X1 than this one (and in Ireland they both use Alphera Ireland t/a BMW Finance) because the residuals on the BMW are much higher. So it's cheaper only if you pay cash ...

It is a fake as its only 2 wheel drive and its a little bit slower than the Suzuki Vitara S and not so good on fuel as it either and the Vitara S is all wheel drive which should make it slower and less economical so why isn't the Mazda better on fuel and performance being 2 wd? The bigger engine should give it the edge on its 0-60. The Co2 isn't as good either. It wouldn't do for me as I dont buy purely on looks.

Unfortunately i brought a new cx5 last year. The gear box played up 3 months later. Mazda were absolutely awful dealing with the problem. i too brought the car thinking Mazda reliability etc but would never touch mazda again ever.

My 2 is doing pretty well. I haven't faced any troubles with it. Well, I did blow my gearbox once, but that's because I did J-turns. It's a great car with great fuel economy that delivers a very good driving experience.

The published fault rate on the transmissions is very low. Their auto transmission is statistically the least troublesome in the class. Nissan's CVT's have had recalls. VW DSG's have a higher failure rate and when they go, your bank balance knows it.

Why manual? Why? It's not like you have a BRZ or MX5....

Zifei Li If I'm not mistaken the number of manual cars in Britain is 70%, so manuals are more popular there compared to autos

Please start reviewing base models, most of the ppl would lease or finance base models not premiums. Terrible vehicle, 2,5 makes a lot of noise, road noise, terrible MPG, 6 speed auto trans. small front seats, small driver space (reduce space between your food and gas pedal with brick pedal-this is serious safety issue) , front arm rest way behind incl. cup holders, ac controls are way down and unsafe to control the ac when you driving, side mirrors vibrate with 70 mph, if you have premium pack there is TWO fuel indicators next to each other lol, heated steering is only 1/4 of it, line keep assist doesn't work 90% of the time in the Citi or suburbans driving, terible on long drive, there is good things: great automated head lights (if equipped) automated wipers, heads up display (if I equipped) blin spot monitoring, ventilated front seats (if equipped) I wouldn't recommend this vehicle, for that money there is another better options on the market.

Handling best in class? Hmm. If you're comparing it to a Qashqai, that puts it alongside the Seat Ateca. And having driven both, the Ateca has the superior handling, and gearbox. The CX-5 is a great car though.

Might I ask why Mazda put a CD-player in a brand new car in 2017?

Because dinosaurs like me are everywhere and we still like to play real discs rather than only that digital download tosh.

ShroomWalrus I'm glad Mazda are doing this. I own an i pod and smartphone but still want the ability to play my CDs if the mood takes me.

In the States, we don't get the cd player - I miss it already, but will adapt. Also, every other major luxury or premium brand is still putting cd players in cars, ShroomWalrus.

I remember a carwow/carbuyer review where they noted that the Audi Q3 had a CD-player in it and how dumb that was. Why waste resources putting in technology in your car (in this car ruining the leather stitching by interrupting it) when no-one uses CD's anymore (it's probably country dependent) EDIT: Like for example car makers have stopped putting cigarette lighters into cars as standard because smoking has decreased and it's instead an option
