This is a Motormouth couple car comparison of the Kia Sportage and Mazda CX-5 compact SUVs. The Kia Sportage has a 2.5L 4-cylinder with an 8-speed automatic transmission, 187 horsepower and 178 lb-ft of torque. FWD and AWD options are available. There is a Sportage hybrid available and a plug-in hybrid both with a 1.6L turbocharged 4-cylinder engine. We will be focusing on the gas model as the CX-5 does not have an electrified powertrain available. The Mazda CX-5 has two engine options, the base engine competes well with the Sportage gas model. It has a 2.5L 4-cylinder with a 6-speed automatic transmission, 187 horsepower and 186 lb-ft of torque. Standard AWD. There is also a turbocharged variation of this engine with 227 horsepower and 310 lb-ft of torque on regular fuel. You get a bump in power if you use premium fuel, 256 horsepower and 320 lb-ft of torque. The Sportage has an elegant interior with a driver-focused cockpit. It has an available dual panoramic curved display connecting two screens, a 12.3” digital driver display and a 12.3” touchscreen with Navigation. Standard features include, a 4.2” display, 12.3” in the US, an 8” touchscreen with wireless Apple Carplay and Android Auto, wired on the larger touchscreen, cloth seats and available leatherette. Higher trims include features like a power driver and passenger seat, driver seat memory, ventilated font seats, heated rear seats, heated steering wheel, a wireless phone charge, surround view monitor, a Harman Kardon Sound system, a power liftgate and a panoramic sunroof. The CX-5 offers a sophisticated interior with a touch of elegance. Available soft Nappa leather upholstery in Cocoa and Abachi wood gives this crossover a luxurious feel. Standard features include, a 10.25” display with Mazda Connect, a 7” LCD display, Apple Carplay and Android Auto, cloth upholstery, heated front seats, and a manual driver and passenger seat. Available features include, a heated steering wheel, a power driver and passenger seat, driver seat memory, ventilated front seats, heated rear seats, a wireless charger, a power liftgate, Bose sound system and a moonroof.

I own a 2022 CX-5 2.5 TURBO SIGNATURE I noticed that didn't mention the Mazda has a heads up display and headlights with Adaptive Front-lighting System. The only I would like is wireless Android Auto and remove the shinny plastic a pillars. A quite car with beautiful touch surfaces and Bose system is hard to beat. I looked at the Lexus but wasn't willing to pay extra 12-15K for the L logo. I have owned Acura's , Infiniti's, Honda's but Mazda is creating a very high quality product that is punching above it's price class. I am a subscriber .

My choice for this comparison would be Mazda all the way. Yes, the KIA is bigger, more tech, etc., but for me, it's the quality that counts. Mazda has a proven track record when it comes to long term reliability, while the KIA does not. Hopefully, I'll be buying my new CX-5 before long. They hit way above their league, in my opinion. I really like the Mazda. In fact, I have consistently been recommending people to consider it as a potential option. However, I have recently received interesting information from over the pond (Britain), and from a reliable source, that Mazda is receiving a much higher than expected number of warranty claims (though entirely covered) based on premature turbo issues (£1,500 - £2,500). I have NOT heard any of any (consistent/reliable) issues over here (Canada/United States). Despite this… I would still short list as worth considering. Thanks for another interesting comparison video.

Mazda's controller over touch screen is much safer way to go as many studies have shown and it one of key reasons CX5 feels and drives like higher spec car here. Reliability and assembly and parts quality are superior in Mazda as well. Extra space I may take advantage of one a year or not but driving and handling I will do every day... I had this Sportage in Europe for a month with DSG and 1.5t and it was much cheaper quality than Mazda and handling was shaky during sportier drive attempts ... Plastics and fit and finish along with lesser resolution LCD screens that did not have black but grey backgrounds looked like early 2000s cheap LCD screens .... There is no comparison what is a better vehicle here , sorry but little more air and space is not a reason for Kia to be better .... Now keep this KIA for 5 or 10 yrs and you will see how it holds up... again Mazda will last longer and stay together better

I trade cars in at 10 years....all brands just become constant wear and tear problems after that. I hope that helps. yes the math seems incorrect...bought the sportage for my daughter. Mazdas joystick thing took to many steps and searching for me. Perhaps get used to it but I could see myself having trouble while driving to say skip to next folder on my USB music stick. The Kia did not drive that well for me. The sport mode steering wheel stifness felt really aritifical. The engine was underpowered IMO. Also, that fake leather in teh KIA with no option to upgrade concerns me because it looks and feels exactly like that cheap office chair vinyl which always stress cracks and flakes in time. That would leave a nasty looking seat. Stereo was better in the Mazda. The upgraded Harmon stereo in the KIA they did not have on lot for me to try. But the stock EX trim stereo was just barely acceptable. Perhaps the fully loaded KIA would be more comparable but still ... that fake leather being end of line. That worries me. For us it comes down to reliability. Mazda beats Kia/Hyundai. We have a 2021 Mazda CX-5 Grand touring AWD and LOVE it. It's my vehicle, we also have my hubby's pick up which is had a lot room for people and hauling. Funny thing is my hubby loves to drive my CX-5 lol. I have heard so many bad stories from Kia/Hyundai owners.

I just sold my 2019 turbo cx5 for the Kia PhEv and it’s been amazing for the fuel economy and also the drive is so smooth and also powerful. The drives are different but with the great fuel economy of almost only 2.2 to 3.3 on phev mode and also just 4 to 5 l per 100 km. It’s definitely a win win for KIA sportage! Love the sportage unless Mazda comes up with a phev or a hybrid! Or else Mazda is losing a lot of fans like me!

My 2011 Mazda CX-7 has more interior space than my wife’s 2016 Mazda CX-5. I can put an 80” long headboard in my cx7, can’t do that with many compact suvs or even some midsize suvs.

If Hyundai/Kia ever used better quality parts and engineering, they might become a fantastic company. However, their vehicles tend to be poorly engineered and they use lower-quality parts throughout their vehicles. I'd go with a Mazda. They truly are the marriage of European styling and Japanese engineering.

I'll take the Kia Sportage! It's my spirit animal. I like trendy and edgy style. When I enter the room, I make my presence known. And this is what the Kia Sportage is giving me. State of the art technology and ROOM, ROOM, AND MORE ROOM!! I love a vehicle with a panoramic sunroof. And the fact Mazda don't offer it on their vehicles, except for the new CX-50, really ages their brand. Kia gives me more options in powertrain, paint color (Mazda don't offer matte paint as an option), and technology than the Mazda CX-5.
