Is the Mazda CX-8 a skinny CX-9 or a long CX-5? And is it a worthy addition to Mazda’s line-up, or a compromise best avoided? These are just some of the questions answered by Dan and Alex as they head out in the recently updated large SUV, the Mazda CX-8.

Would you buy a CX-8 over a CX-9? Tell us why either way!

if you are going this size...may as well get the cx9. Diesel makes sense ..but IMHO Stupid not to have put the turbo petrol in the cx8. I have the 2.5 in a SP25GT 3 and I cant imagine a big SUV(full of people/cargo) having much pull lol the skyactiv turbo in the cx9 is the way
@WheelsAustralia
@WheelsAustralia 3 года назад
@@automtr agreed! The atmo 4cyl feels underdone in this size of vehicle. How are you finding the SP25?

Yes the cx8 as narrower if need 7 seats - with turbo diesel as the 2.5 non turbo is slow :) however I do miss the Merc and Volvo estates with their rear seats however safety means they’re extinct so cross over it is - there’s noting sporty here so we need to ban the SUV acronym

@@WheelsAustraliaRE: the SP25GT...the 2.5 is perfectly suited and I don't hate it...but i dont love it either. I think it is because I got Jedi Mind tricked by the Mrs to trade in my MPS6, (which was my dream car and I loved it for the last 10years)...to get something newer and auto and more "baby,/toddler" friendly. We have 2 kids under 4yrs. I regret my decision (the trade in, not the kids) but my wallet and driver's license thanks me. I've had the CX9 Sport as a work car temporary, so will mostly likely get that when the kids are a bit bigger. Meanwhilst I'm actually driving my Mrs 2006 Sp23. So yeah I got the short end....bring on mid life crisis!!!

Great review and great question. And answer... we are going with the CX-8, I'm seeing the narrowness as a strength when it comes to driving around town. The 2.5 atmo doesn't worry me too much either, it's way better than our current family car.

We own a CX-8 Diesel with the captain‘s seats since December 2019 and we are very happy after more than 40,000 kilometres. We also own a CX-5 Diesel from 2017. The CX-8 is definitely more comfortable and has more space. The long wheelbase can be tricky in tight parking situations.

Glad to hear you’re enjoying the CX-8! Can we ask: why did you go for the captain’s chairs over the conventional second row? Genuinely curious.
3 года назад
@@WheelsAustralia We are a family of 4. The 3rd row is only used, when going out with guests and we only want to use one car. The middle console gives a lot of space to store all the stuff for the kids. It also has a drawer down, which is very practically. We like the luxury ambience of these seats. And finally, in Thailand you only get the full specs with this version.

I like how the other one criticize and the other one is positive. It gives the buyer something to weigh in. Great review

Great review! I'm thinking to buy a cx9, I'm just concerned it'll will have a drastic restyling for the upcoming models 2023. Last big changes has been in 2016.. I'm just worry to buy an outdated car about to be redesigned completely next year ... I'd love to hear your opinion about it 😄 thanks for the review again!

LE variant suits a family with adult children. I had a Honda Odyssey with captains chairs & we all loved the seats

This exterior color is stunning.....would love for the CX5 to have this color and front grill....

I very like the captain’s chair in the second row. My son loves it, because he has a lot of space for his stuff.

Agreed! We've got two young kids in child seats, and nobody's going to be sitting between those anyway, so they might as well be in captain's chairs with some good cup holders and console storage between them!

I agree that the CX-8 looks a little bit awkward in some view angles. But I very like the side profile, where it looks very elegant. I am living in Thailand where the CX-9 is also (no more) available. I think, I also would have still chosen the CX-8 and not the CX-9.

The heated steering wheel button is on the wrong side because the console is lifted out of the CX9 and pretty much all cx9 cars are left hand drive

Hi guys just bought cx8 2 months ago. Lovely as a family car with 7 seats. However just wondering if it’s 13cm narrower than cx9 then seats are narrower too right? It’s very hard to tell by looking dash and front seats of both models. Than where’s the 13cm used up in cx9? Or what’s less in cx8 in terms of width?

I loved my cx7 turbo but even after being serviced by Mazda on time every time mechanically it fell apart at 170,000kms and it had the worst ever fuel economy but I loved driving it, so I like the cx8 as get the boot space not needing the rear seat row and it has diesel

I’ve always viewed the CX-8 as like a CX-5 Allspace, i.e. a 5+2 as opposed to a proper 7-seater. As for the pick of the range, maybe the AWD Touring? Asaki is great though, but for that money you’d probably be better off with the Sorento.

The seats in the 3rd row are one of the bests in this range. Adults up to 1.70 m can sit there for a short trip.

Can't compare the 3rd row to a Tiguan. Ive sat on them both. Mazda CX-8 is proper! Tiguan 3rd row is a joke - no adult can survive more than 15 mins in there but can't put child seat either, so whos going to sit there?! Allspace is good because better boot space when 3rd row is folded.

The cx-8 has plenty of room for a family of 4-5 + a dog. The narrower body is great for ever shrinking car parks, plus it can tow 2T.

CX-8 (skyactive G) has same 2,488cc base engine as 2WD CX-7 Classic (Port Injection) where Mazda tweaked the exhaust timing to bring on Max Torque at 1,850rpm. This made a lovely town car where power came without revs. CX-8 needs to rev to 4,400 to reach max torque so I can imagine a CX-7 owner being disappointed driving a CX-8

It would out sell the CX9 if it was fitted with the CX9's petrol turbo

You can’t get a cx9 diesel and Mazda petrols are fragile and don’t last
