Mazda3 is a premium compact hatchback these days as the Japanese carmaker is shifting the brand upmarket. Mazda Premium philosophy is all about design, mastery, joyfullness, etc. If you’re into that I respect that, but I’m more interested in how it drives.
At launch in Europe Mazda3 is available with a 122 hp Skyactiv-G engine. Some markets also get a Skyactiv-G diesel. The fancy Skyactiv-X will be available later in the autumn of 2019. Mazda also uses a 24-volt M-Hybrid (or mild-hybrid) system.
Starting price: 23 000 euro
As tested: ~30 000 euro

Interesting to hear your comments about the auto transmission. Here in Australia, we get the 2.5 litre engine which mates much better to the auto transmission and makes a huge difference to performance. It doesn’t ‘hunt’ for gears like the 2.0 litre does. Virtually no one buys the manual transmission here (about 3% of sales). And Australia also gets rear air vents on all but the base level model. Really enjoyed your review. Thank you.

Great review Marek, you mentioned some vibrations in 2 cyl mode and that accelerator cut off from front collision system? Can you tell more about these issues and feedback from Mazda officials? Can 2cyl mode be turned off? Thank you
@MarekDrives
@MarekDrives 5 лет назад
You can turn off i-stop, and that I think also turns off cylinder deactivation. i-stop is back on every time you restart the engine. Feedback from Mazda: we heard something about it. As far as collision system is concerned, I didn't ask Mazda about it, because it happened to me late during the test. No time. I'm sure I'll hear from them after the weekend :) It's hard to replicate "on demand". I experienced it once, and I heard two other journalists having similar issues.

Great review Marek, I was waiting for it cause I loved the new looks but I was having my doubts precisely on the visibility and practicality for a family. How does the new infotainment system compare with the old one? Is it finally usable?
@MarekDrives
@MarekDrives 5 лет назад
Let's just say the old one didn't exist to me. Mazda and Lexus were competing for the worst infotainment system on the market. The new MZD Connect is pretty intuitive, fast enough, it never crashed (which was quite frequent in Mazda press cars). It's not the best out there, but it's a solid average. It wouldn't stop me from buying Mazda, like the old one did.
@djoetma
@djoetma 5 лет назад
Yeah, for practicality I think few cars with coupe-esk linings are suitable for a family. And the Mazda 3 probably loses out to all competitors in this respect. I used to drive a 406 Coupé in college. I think that was one of the few exceptions of coupés with decent space in the back in history.
@jbm0866
@jbm0866 2 месяца назад
Everyone seems to mention the infotainment screen should be bigger, but I disagree. I have a 2021 Mazda 3 turbo hatch and I quite like the fact the dashboard isnt dominated by a giant screen. Don't we all have enough of those in our life? 7.5 inch screen on my phone, 17" screen laptop, 24" desktop monitor and at home a 55" LED tv to watch movies and tv. When I get in my car it's about the drive, not fiddling with another screen. Most of the time I only use my infotainment for music and thats it. The nav (like most car systems) isnt great compared to Google maps so I use my phone for that function. Do I wish the backup camera used more of the available screen? Yes, but what I can see is clear and does the job. Basically I cant imagine having a larger center screen making my car any more enjoyable to drive. In fact when I think back to the quite extensive number of cars I've owned, none of the ones really enjoyable to drive had an LCD screen, or it was too small and limited in function to make any difference. If you havent guessed already I'm not a fan of the latest trend of having car interiors dominated by a flat screen that stretches almost all the way across the dash. That may be the latest fad, but I vastly prefer Mazda's restrained and classy retro look. My car has every feature I could possibly need, yet it's not in my face all the time.

While I'd prefer a more practical design, Mazda is simply a little ahead of the industry trend towards making traditional cars into 2+2s with aggressively sloping roof lines. Families are moving to SUVs, making traditional cars more of an aesthetic or enthusiast option.
@MarekDrives
@MarekDrives 5 лет назад
With this engine and suspension setup this is hardly an enthusiast car.
@BruceLeedar
@BruceLeedar 5 лет назад
@@MarekDrives I'm using the term enthusiast broadly, as in 'people who like cars' rather than 'people who want lower track times'. Even in less sporty cars, the lower centre of gravity and lower weight leads to superior driving feel and handling compared to an SUV, provided the engineering is equally competent. As the manufacturers seem to see it, no 'normal person' who doesn't care much about cars will be buying a traditional car in the near future. This effect is slower to develop in Europe due to the high cost of vehicle ownership there making every little saving more significant (manual transmission, small & lightweight design as in traditional cars), but you can see it in North America and Australasia.
@MarekDrives
@MarekDrives 5 лет назад
As a person who likes cars I'd never recommend this car to other enthusiasts in its current state.
@BruceLeedar
@BruceLeedar 5 лет назад
@@MarekDrives You're missing my point. Regardless of your opinion, I never even said anywhere that the Mazda3 specifically was an 'enthusiast car' (whatever you want that to mean). I'm simply pointing out that the traditional 'form factor' car, in general, is being phased out as the conventional family vehicle and becoming a niche design. This niche is logically comprised of people who prefer the looks of a car and/or prefer the driving character. The new Mazda3 is trying to lean into this, successfully or not. I personally have no opinion one way or the other on the driving character of the new Mazda3 since I've never even seen any in person yet, but as per usual with Mazda there seems to be wildly disparate professional reviews across the globe. I would point out that the American reviewer SavageGeese seemed to be satisfied with the handling as a street car that's not trying to be a sports car (enough that he was considering buying the car), and he is very much an 'enthusiast' in the strong meaning of the term (does track days all the time, not uncommon to be the fastest journalist around the track at release events for sports cars).
@rizzlerazzleuno4733
@rizzlerazzleuno4733 5 лет назад
If car designers continue to make the back seat of sedans and hatchbacks more cramped, it is just going to drive more people to buy crossover vehicles. What is the point of a back seat if it is uncomfortable and hard to see out, and why make a hatchback when the cargo capacity is less than a sedan trunk? The 2+2 mostly implies there are two-doors and appearance of a rear seat, useful only if the folks back there are under 4'6". I have never liked being stuck in the back seat of a 2 door car, but I have owned a couple of Toyota Celicas, but never made any adult ride in the back seat. Mazda might as well make the Model 3 hatch into a two-door car and then they can slant the roof even more. 🙂

Also the new Skyactiv-D is a bad joke, don't know why Mazda even bothers. They are going to offer it in US, but I cannot imagine why anyone here would buy one. Diesels are fine for trucks, but since diesel fuel is more expensive than regular gasoline it makes no sense in smaller cars. @rizzle razzleuno US buyers are not taxed on engine displacement, and fuel is dirt cheap compared to Europe. I recall driving a V6 EcoBoost Ford Edge across the Rockies in Canada, and I averaged 25.5 mpg. By European standards this is a poor result, and if this was a diesel, it would easily do 34-35 mpg on the same route. Mazda's 2.5L engine is a complete waste of time and energy, and the auto box doesn't help. I tested the 2.5L Mazda6 a few months ago, and it was absolutely horrible to drive because of that engine. Mazda has a decent 2.0 160-165 hp engine, which works pretty well with a manual transmission even in bigger (by European standard) cars like the CX-5 and Mazda6.

I think you nailed it with your conclusion. To me it also seems like unfinished product with one engine option. Mazda facelifts nr6 for ages so it probably works for mazda perfectly. not sure if it works also for buyes/betatesters :)
@BruceLeedar
@BruceLeedar 5 лет назад
The lack of engines in Europe is due to Mazda's decision not to fit a particulate filter on the petrol model, nor urea injection (AdBlue) on the diesel. This saves money, weight and space, but means the engine has to run very clean. Most manufacturers have had to fit these features because they can't make engines that run clean enough to pass modern emissions tests, but Mazda's ace SkyActiv-X engine runs so clean that they aren't necessary. However, in the meantime while Mazda finishes work on the new engine they've had to aggressively detune their existing petrol engine and fit a mild hybrid system to pass these tests.

Excellent review and I enjoy your humor. I think Mazda is going in the wrong direction with the Model 3........The wheelbase should be lengthened 3 inches to give more legroom for rear seat passengers, the windows need to be larger, and the hatchback needs to be less slanted to provide more useful luggage capacity. Mazda apparently thinks styling is more important than practicality. I imagine a lot of folks that like this design won't carry adults in the rear seat and have enough cargo capacity with the rear seat backs flipped forward. But still, the view out of the car is really limited. Let's hope other manufactures don't follow this example. I want windows, not cameras. 🤔
@Crosshead1
@Crosshead1 5 лет назад
I think Mazda is trying to steer people that want the things you complain about more towards their SUVs, especially the soon to be released CX-30. The 3 now seems more attuned to someone looking for a ‘sporty’ (ie. less practical) hatchback. Personally, I love the look of the new 3 Hatch and would overlook the impracticalities in preference to its style. But that’s me. I find practical cars boring.
@rizzlerazzleuno4733
@rizzlerazzleuno4733 5 лет назад
@@Crosshead1The Mazda 3 hatchback has transitioned from what was once nearly a station wagon shape to its now sporty shape, which does have an appeal to some. So when are they going to put the turbo 2.5 in it? I suspect that all car companies would love for everyone to buy a CUV, SUV or truck.....that's where the most profit is. The F-150 has become Ford's gold mine.

I own a mazda 3 hatch ( previous gen), and some reviews say the rear seat is smAller than some. But, thats because cars like the Civic and Carolla have grown to near mid size dimensions. I bout a 3 because i like compact cars. If rear seat room is a priority, wouldn’t most people shop the mid size class?

@rizzlerazzleuno4733 5 лет назад
@@mikeracicot5003 The current Civic sedan and Corolla sedan are a bit smaller in wheelbase, width, length, height than the current Mazda 3 sedan and all three of these are in the compact car category. I had a 2013 Mazda 3 hatch and it was great except no adults wanted to ever ride in the back seat and the wind and road noise was terrible. Got 40 mpg and was fun to drive.
@mikeracicot5003
@mikeracicot5003 5 лет назад
rizzle razzleuno i think the new Mazda3 sedan has grown, and the hatch really hasn’t. I could be wrong, but i believe the sedan has more rear seat legroom andis competetive with those other cars, while the hatch is smaller. Either way, Mazda seems to have much more passion for crafting stylish, fun cars. The others are reliable, prActical, and boring ( of fugly, in the Civic hatch’s case)

Never said anything about the tons of changes they did for a better sound insulation, all the safety equipment that this gets as standard , the new Bose sound system relocation for better sound acoustics, how the car now locks automatically when you start driving , all four of the windows now can go down with one long press, coming home lights, 360 view camera, the new enhanced haptics of the buttons, all of this are upgrades of the old generation complaints! @@Player_-lu5kh I've driven a 1.6 Innovation Astra in search of a replacement for my 1 series. It seems like a fine engine, but it's certainly is not as responsive as the Skyactiv engines. Yes, at first glance the interior looks well made, but it's still not as good as you'll find in more expensive cars (which makes sense).
