I wish my water temp was upper 40's it was 37 today when I went to the lake and checked it. But what Randy is describing is a dying shad imitation. The strike king red eye shad is also great for this technique because it has a great shimmy on the way back down. A lot of people think fish automatically float when they die. This cant be farther from the truth. Great video.

30+ years ago in my ciggy smoking days in the dead of winter I was bank fishing just downstream from a mud island where a medium size river emptied into a bigger river, I cast out a 1/2 oz rattle trap type bait- it had one treble hook, The bait had a line hole on the top so the line threaded through so the line tied directly to the treble hook. I cast out as far as I could, set the rod down to light up & just as you describe a good 2 lb'er made my day. So, I believe!

Years ago, I lucked up on a similar technique, I was fishing for spotted bass on a small lake in Middle Georgia in the fall, using a 6,6 medium action Rod, and a Zebco 33 reel loaded with 10 lbs flouro line, I was throwing a silver /blue rattle trap 1/4 oz lure, with the spincast reel I could cast a mile and the light line let the lure dive pretty deep, I wore out the spotted Bass with this setup , caught a few largemouth too !

Interesting what you said about bass not biting big lures as the water gets colder. Big swimbait guys would disagree. And each person's experience is different. I primarily throw large swimbaits almost exclusively, typically 9in and bigger. The winter is by far my most productive season. Now the glide bait /hard swimbait bite does slow down but when the water dips below 60 that's when I start throwing my fav swimbait ever, the 10in Huddleston or the Hawg Hunter Mag. Now there is an x factor , I'm fishing trout stocked lakes. And these lakes get stocked mid to late fall. I'm also specifically targeting giant northern strain largemouth and we have a couple of lakes that produce double digit largemouth. But trout is the key to this. Throughout the year my biggest fish are caught in late December thru January, when the trout are the most active throughout the year. Once it gets into March I rarely catch big fish,which is 7-8 lbs and bigger. Now on local lakes that don't have trout I rarely catch fish on the big swimbait, i do have to downsize, which I don't enjoy. If you have a lake that has a healthy trout population or stocking program and you have a good bass population, there is a small percentage of those bass that will specifically target trout. Even if the lake has just noethern strains there is potentially dd largemouth in it. I'm not a fan of forward facing sonar but I used it to study the fish I was targeting and I learned that in one particular lake these giant largemouth were specifically targeting trout. They would let balls of threadfin shad and small groups of gizzards go by and not even move on em. They were set up on specific structure in deep water waiting for trout to come over. Of course in fishing nothing is set in stone.
@rockyj2008
@rockyj2008 Год назад
What’s water temperature where your fishing? Try fishing 40 degree water here in northern Michigan.
@C.Adams82
@C.Adams82 Год назад
@@rockyj2008 typically between 45 and 50 throughout winter but I've caught em on a hudd as low as 38. I'm talking about bigger fish, trophy caliber fish, which I understand is relative to each person but let's say 7lbs and up. Water temp doesn't really matter in this particular situation. The fish have to eat and a big fish isn't going to pass up a good meal, in this situation trout. Having trout in the water in my experience is crucial. As I said in my original comment I don't catch em on big swimbaits that much on lakes without trout. Of course this is my experience, everyone's is different.

@@C.Adams82 you ain’t wrong on those big soft plastic swimbaits and cold water. Those big kickers can’t resist a slow moving big bait/meal this time of year. I use a 1/4oz lipless to find the wad and a big swimbait to yank on those bigguns lurking below. Works every time!🎣🎣🎣🎣

Spro Aruku 60 is rated 3/8 oz with a smaller profile than a 1/4 Rat-L-Trap and casts very well, and also much less $$ than a Jackal TN60, it should also be worth a consideration for this tech. and at 3/8 oz it gets to and stays on bottom a bit better than the 1/4 and helps for longer casts. Agree that this is an excellent option along with a smaller blade bait.

Tournament was just won at dale hollow on a lipless. Largemouth, not smallies, on edge of some grass areas (grass is sparse there, not thick like guntersville or something). So it wasnt like ripping it hard or anything, this was smsller traps, letting it fall to bottom right on edge of grass. This lightly popping it and shaking it. Everyone who targeted smallmouth with jigs and ned rigs on rocks and points bombed the tourney. The guys that did well found largemouth in the very few areas of still kinda green grass. Lipless are deadly this time of year. I bombed the tourney, but my buddy who came in second said he’d get bit on the fall and not feel it just like you said, lift up, and theyd be there.

With your index finger….feathering the line coming off spool….
@shadygraves
@shadygraves Год назад
What ☝🏼he said. What I have done with a spinning reel, for over 40 years now, is to slowly close my hand into a 'C' shape around the spool, applying pressure and feathering the reel, slowing the cast, and then I pull a bit of line off the spool as I close the bail with my hand (NEVER with the handle!). This does a couple of things for you: it feathers your cast and it takes any slack out of your line that may cause twist. It also saves your bail spring. With practice, this should become second nature and all be done simultaneously in one smooth motion.
